Jersey States should 'do more' to help in recession

Jersey's government should do more to help people through the recession, according to the chairman of the consumer council.

Senator Alan Breckon said he was worried earnings had not gone up at the same rate as prices.

He said this meant that many people were struggling to cope financially.

Social Security Minister Senator Francis Le Gresley said families on middle incomes were finding it particularly hard to make ends meet.

He said: "They are worrying times for everybody, middle income families have found time difficult with new tax rates and in many places people have not had a pay rise."

Senator Breckon wants the States of Jersey to change the way it decides how much pensions should go up to take account of inflation.
