Channel Islands Christmas Lottery grant is used to buy CCTV

A community group in Jersey spent Channel Islands Christmas lottery funding on security cameras after a spate of thefts.

Older people at the Good Companions Club said they felt unsafe after money was stolen.

They spent the £4,000 lottery grant installing CCTV cameras.

Elaine Griffin, the manager, said there were other things they would have liked to spend the money on, but they wanted a camera in every room.

She said a handbag was stolen, a day's takings disappeared, and the Remembrance Day collection tin was taken and later found ripped open with the money taken out of it.

She said the members felt they were an easy target, but she said the cameras had worked and now they felt much safer.

"It's fantastic, we haven't had one incident up to now, touch wood, but even if we do we've got them on the CCTV which is a relief," she said.
