Jersey deputies object to States review group

Two Jersey politicians have officially objected to plans for States Members to be part of a panel reviewing the election system.

Deputies Judy Martin and Montfort Tadier said it would undermine the Electoral Commission's independence.

In 2011 the States agreed to set up an independent commission to look at how the political system could be improved.

The committee that sets the rules felt politicians should be part of the commission.

Deputy Tadier and Deputy Martin said politicians on the panel would seriously jeopardise its effectiveness.
