Jersey's social housing department is to be renamed Andium Homes once it becomes a private company.

The States of Jersey approved plans to turn the Housing Department into a new firm, giving it greater decision-making and revenue-raising freedoms.

Deputy Andrew Green said Andium was the name the Romans gave Jersey in the 1st Century BC.

He said: "We wanted to include a reference to Jersey in our name to reflect our pride in the Island."

Deputy Green said the current housing department staff would be transferred to the new company, which is expected to launch in July.

In December politicians approved plans to borrow £250m to build new social housing properties and refurbish existing ones to be operated by the new company.
