Man in court over fatal First Tower crash

A 21-year-old man appeared in Jersey Magistrates' Court on Thursday charged with causing death by dangerous driving.

Vitor Fernandes, 22, was killed in a car crash on Victoria Avenue at First Tower on 30 December.

Jose Joao Santos Silva, of Aigremont Farm, St Saviour, looked impassive as 10 charges were read out against him.

Several charges relate to the condition of the car Mr Silva was driving on the night of the collision.

Magistrate Peter Harris said the main charge of causing death by dangerous driving was "too serious for this court" and referred the case to Jersey's Royal Court.

Madeira-born Mr Silva was released on bail and will re-appear at the magistrates' court for a committal hearing in two weeks.
