Plans to redevelop the former Ann Street Brewery have been approved at a public meeting.

Developer Comprop intends to build 41 homes and a supermarket on the site in St Helier.

The store will house a Tesco-branded supermarket run by Guernsey retailer Alliance.

Comprop has owned the site for eight years and has been consulting on the plans since 2010.

Jersey is currently served by two supermarket operators, Waitrose and the Co-op, but some small retailers are worried a third operator will harm business.

Steve Marie, managing director of Comprop, said the development would provide jobs and support local business.

In May, Alliance announced it would open another, smaller Tesco-based shop on The Parade in St Helier.
