The former Lieutenant Governor of Jersey, Air Marshal Sir John Sutton, has died at the age of 82.

AM Sutton was Lieutenant Governor of the island from 1990 to 1995, but maintained his links throughout the rest of his life.

Chief minister Ian Gorst paid tribute to AM Sutton, saying he carried out the role with "skill and diplomacy".

Lieutenant Governors represent the monarch in Jersey, hosting royal and ambassadorial visits.

AM Sutton, who had a 39-year career in the Royal Air Force, flew fighter jets such as Meteors, Canberras and Phantoms.

He retired from the RAF in 1989 as Air Officer Commanding-in-Chief at RAF Support Command.

A statement from Government House in St Helier said AM Sutton would be "remembered with affection by all who knew him".

He lived in Oakham, Rutland, but maintained links with Jersey and visited most recently in October.

He is survived by his wife Angela and three children.
