Colombia's new Vice-President, Angelino Garzon, has had emergency heart bypass surgery after falling ill just two days after taking office.

Doctors said his condition was stable and he was recuperating in intensive care after the operation.

Mr Garzon, 63, was taken to hospital in Bogota on Monday morning after complaining of persistent chest pains.

Colombian president Juan Manuel Santos has visited his deputy and talked to the medical team.

The two leaders were sworn into office on Saturday.

Before his election, Mr Garzon had worked as a journalist and trade unionist. He was also governor of the Valle del Cauca region for three years from 2004.
