At least 16 inmates have been killed and more than 20 injured in a fire at a juvenile prison in El Salvador.

First reports suggested the fire was an accident and not caused by any disturbance at the jail in Ilobasco, 55km (34 miles) from San Salvador.

Several of the injured were said to be suffering serious burns.

The prison houses about 100 inmates, many of them young adults who were convicted of street gang-related crimes as juveniles .

The blaze broke out in the early morning local time on Wednesday and was brought under control in a couple of hours, officials said.

A Red Cross spokesman said the fire may have been caused by an electrical short circuit.
