Violent clashes in Peru over new public sector law

Police and protesters have clashed in the Peruvian capital Lima at demonstrations against a new law for workers in the public sector.

The law introduces annual performance assessments for civil servants and university lecturers as a way of improving standards.

Critics say the reforms will cost jobs and compromise the independence of universities.
