Alma telescope crew go on strike

23 August 2013 Last updated at 13:28 BST

Technicians and administrators at the world's largest radio telescope, the Alma observatory in Chile's Atacama desert, have gone on strike.

Staff want a 15% increase in pay and improved benefits, to compensate for the isolation and harsh conditions of working on a 5000m plateau in the Atacama desert.

Janey Mitchell reports.
