Pacific castaway: Mother 'knew he was not dead'

The mother of a fisherman from El Salvador who claims he spent more than a year adrift in the Pacific says she never gave up hope her son was alive.

Speaking from the town of Garita Palmera in El Salvador, Maria Julia Alvarenga thanked everyone involved in his rescue.

Authorities are still trying to confirm Mr Alvarenga's story.
