Brazil's renewed battle against street violence

In the past few years Brazil has become a bigger political and economic player on the world stage, but it has not yet been able to eliminate the high levels of violence that plague its cities.

Rapes and homicides have been rising rapidly despite efforts to drive gangsters out of deprived areas.
