Cuba to build its first RC church since the revolution of 1959

Cuba will build its first new Roman Catholic place of worship since the Marxist revolution of 1959.

When the revolutionary army overthrew the dictator Fulgenico Batista, Cuba became a communist state and as such, was atheist.

Its attitude to religion has softened since the fall of the Soviet Union, but this is the first Catholic church to be built for more than 50 years.

Sarah Rainsford reports from Santiago de Cuba.
