Syria crisis: Lakhdar Brahimi resigns as UN Arab League envoy

The United Nations and Arab League special envoy to Syria said he was "sad" to leave the country in its current state, as he announced his resignation from the post.

Lakhdar Brahimi had been tasked with trying to achieve a resolution to the conflict, and had negotiated government officials and opposition forces to two sets of peace talks but both resulted in little progress.
