Gaza: Egypt brokers truce as Israel withdraws troops

5 August 2014 Last updated at 11:42 BST

A three-day ceasefire between Israel and the Palestinian militant group Hamas, brokered by Egypt, came into force at 08:00 local time (05:00 GMT).

Israeli commanders have redeployed troops just outside the Gaza strip but have said they would respond if shot at.

Minutes before the ceasefire began, air raid sirens sounded in northern Israel as Hamas fired a barrage of rockets.

Israeli forces also staged raids in Gaza shortly before the ceasefire began.

Martin Patience reports from the Gaza Strip and Bethany Bell reports from Jerusalem.
