For many years, people have dreamed of interacting with computers in the same way as they do with each other.

Touch screen technology has allowed us to interact with our phones and we can gesture at our games consoles and televisions, but until recently, speech recognition technology was far from perfect, with background noise causing it particular problems.

Spencer Kelly reports on the latest developments in speech recognition which could change the way we interact with our devices.
