Memphis floods: Before and after

The dramatic rise in the Mississippi River around Memphis Tennessee is shown in these images, taken by Nasa on 20 April and 10 May 2011. They show some of the worst flooding since the 1930s.

Floodwaters peaked around the city on Wednesday 11 May, at 48ft (14.6m), and they are unlikely to recede for some time. Below, the images show a wider view of how the river has swollen, particularly to the north of Memphis.
