BBC.com wins prestigious US Peabody Award
The BBC's international website has won a Peabody Award, one of the most prestigious media awards in the US, for its coverage of global news.
BBC.com won the accolade for overall excellence, with its online operation described by the judges as "uniquely situated" to cover world events.
The highly competitive Peabody awards are bestowed for excellence in radio, TV or online media.
A panel of expert judges whittled some 1,000 entries down to 38 winners.
In their citation, the Peabody judges highlighted the BBC's global reach and long history of covering events in all corners of the world.
"With access to more than 2,000 journalists and the BBC's 72 overseas news bureaus, the site is uniquely situated to provide immediate, evolving coverage of news events great and small," the judges said.
The other winners represent a broad cross-section of US-facing media operations.
CNN, NPR, and al-Jazeera won for their coverage of the Arab Spring, and there were awards for comedian Stephen Colbert's skits on US political fundraising, offbeat comedy Portlandia andTED.com, a website showcasing creative thinkers.
The BBC's Panorama documentary Somalia: Land of Anarchy also won a Peabody, telling the story of reporter Peter Greste's return to Somalia six years after the murder of his producer on assignment in Mogadishu.
The Peabody Awards panel says that the winners each year are determined by one criterion only - "excellence", describing the eventual winners as "the best of the best".
The award for BBC.com comes after a year of increased focus on news operations in the US.
Steve Herrmann, editor of the BBC News website, said the Peabody Award was "fantastic news".
"It is recognition of BBC News as a whole against very strong competition. Investment into BBC.com has helped us expand our operations in the Washington bureau to create an even better showcase for BBC News for audiences in North America."
Online journalists now work at the heart of the BBC's Washington DC hub, offering news and feature content aimed at US audiences more directly than ever before.
As well as covering news from across the US and Canada, the team produces bespoke online video and text features for the BBC's international Magazine section, which launched in September 2011.
The US operation is backed by wider BBC News website teams in the UK providing expert coverage of wider global affairs, technology, science and nature, health and the arts.
In 2011 the still-evolving BBC.com operationwon recognitionfrom the Online News Association, receiving a prize for general excellence in the Online Journalism Awards.
