President Barack Obama has won a second term in the White House after beating his Republican challenger, Mitt Romney, in a closely-fought contest.

But the last four years have been challenging ones and there has been formidable opposition to the president's agenda.

As Mr Obama begins to prepare for the next four, Paul Adams looks back at his first term in office.
