Obama: John Kerry 'perfect choice' as secretary of state

US President Barack Obama has nominated Senator John Kerry to replace Hillary Clinton as his next secretary of state.

Speaking to the media in Washington, President Obama said that over many years Mr Kerry had "earned the respect and confidence of leaders around the world".

He also described Mr Kerry as the "perfect choice" for the role.
