US shutdown: Republicans and Democrats deadlocked

Talks between US President Barack Obama and senior members of Congress have failed to produce a resolution to the political deadlock which has forced the shutdown of parts of the federal government.

John Boehner, the Republican Speaker of the House of Representatives, and Nancy Pelosi, the House leader for the minority Democrats, both spoke after the meeting ended.
