Obama considers NSA surveillance review

21 December 2013 Last updated at 09:21 GMT

President Obama has said he will spend the next few weeks deciding what action to take over revelations that the National Security Agency has been storing the records of billions of phone calls, and eavesdropping on foreign leaders.

It follows the release of more details of people and institutions targeted by UK and US surveillance - from documents leaked by Edward Snowden that were published by The Guardian, The New York Times and Der Spiegel.

President Obama made his comments at an end-of-year news conference at the White House saying the international community as well as Americans needed "more confidence" in the system.
