Wildfire in northern California forces evacuations

More than 500 homes and about 1,200 residents have been evacuated in an area east of the California state capital Sacramento due to a wildfire.

Fire crews dropped fire retardant near homes in the blaze's path, but at least five homes were consumed by the inferno.
