On Friday, lawmakers in California will decide whether to go ahead with a new law that would require all school days to start after 8:30am. At the moment, 82% of US middle and high schools begin the day between 07:30am and 08:00am.
The Rand Corporation has carried out the first ever state by state survey analysing the educational and economic implications of a later start. The author of that research, Mark Hafner, explains what they found.
