Marcus Agius, currently Chairman of Barclays PLC, was the first non-executive director appointment to the BBC's new Executive Board, effective from 1 December 2006.
He has taken up the role of Senior Independent Director for the Board.
Marcus Agius has extensive City and commercial experience. He joined Lazard in London in 1972, becoming Chairman of Lazard London in 2001 and Deputy Chairman of Lazard LLC in 2002.
He joined BAA PLC as a non-executive Director in 1995, becoming Chairman in 2002, and joined Barclays PLC in 2006 as a non-executive Director.
He retired from Lazard at the end of 2006 and became Chairman of Barclays PLC on 1 January 2007.
He holds an MBA from Harvard Business School.
Marcus Agius is a Trustee of the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew and is Chairman of the Kew Foundation.
