Marking the 50th anniversary in 2008 of the death of Ralph Vaughan Williams, Stephen Johnson presents an elegiac portrait of the man and composer. Travelling across England - the country Vaughan Williams so loved - to see the places he lived and worked, and meet the people who knew him, Johnson tries to get a little closer to an underrated mind.
With contributions from the philosopher AC Grayling, biographers Simon Heffer and Michael Kennedy, Vaughan Williams's musical assistant Roy Douglas as well as friend and colleague Simona Pakenham.
