10.00am: Proms Family Orchestra & Chorus Come and join us to create a folk-inspired premiere, or learn folk songs from around the British Isles.
12.00pm: Proms Folk in the Park A free Proms mini folk festival in the park.

We're opening up the doors to the Royal Albert Hall for our first ever free of charge Prom! Come over the road after Folk in the Park to the Royal Albert Hall and experience the Proms for yourself in our special folk-influenced concert.

Programme to include:

  • Traditional Folk songs: Seventeen Come Sunday, Green Bushes, I wonder as I wander
  • Vaughan Williams English Folk Song Suite, for military band (c.11mins)
  • Grainger Shepherd's Hey; Green Bushes (c.4 mins)
  • Berio Folk Songs (25 mins)
  • Trad. arr. Folkestra Folk music from the British Isles (15 mins)
  • Trad. arr. Muzikas from Transylvania, the Eastern Carpathian Mountains and Moldova (15 mins)
  • Bartók Romanian Dances (13 mins)
  • interspersed with traditional folk-song settings
  • Kathryn Tickell 'Confluence' (BBC commission: world premiere) (c8 mins)

Following the free afternoon concert exploring how folk music has influenced classical composers, Proms Folk Day's evening concert focuses on artists who are continuing, reviving and reinterpreting the traditions of English folk music.

Tonight's Prom presents a fascinating picture of the many directions folk music is taking, and includes appearances from Derbyshire-born singer Bella Hardy, guitarist Martin Simpson and the boisterous 11-piece big band Bellowhead - winners of three Radio 2 Folk Awards.

Join your partners in the Arena, or just watch from your seat, as the London Lasses and Pete Quinn lead the dancing in an energetic final flourish to Proms Folk Day.

Free to ticket-holders for the 7.30pm concert; dancers require a free dancing ticket, available from Tuesday 27 May by calling the Box Office 0845 401 5040
