Etiquette tips and pitfalls to avoid when posting on the message board

Hosting and moderation on the Radio 3 message board

Message board etiquette tips
From Southendian - Radio 3 Host

What follows was written with the Radio 3 message boards in mind but applies equally to making contributions to blogs.

Blogs may be hosted differently from message boards; bloggers, hosts and readers like comments to stay pretty much on topic and to be concise.

One of the main reasons people have their posts removed by moderators on the Radio 3 message boards is when someone has taken offence and decides to 'take on' the poster of the offending contribution.

The response to the offending post usually includes a presumption, implicit or explicit, about the offending poster's motivation. Such presumptions, be they well-judged or not, are never generous; inevitably they are seized upon as cause for reciprocal offence, real or feigned, and all at once we have a slanging match in full swing.

Typically, a contributor who has had a post modded off in such an exchange will write to us and complain that they were only responding to a post that didn't even merit a response! If you find yourself riled on the boards, resist the temptation to engage in a tit-for-tat exchange.

If you think someone is trolling, that is, deliberately making provocative posts to cause trouble, tread carefully. Either ignore the poster or challenge the content of their messages without calling their motivation into question.

Message boards, even with emoticons or smileys, mostly eliminate the vital intentional cues of verbal communication such as tone of voice and facial expression. Consider, before taking offence in a message board discussion, that you may have completely misunderstood one another.

How do Radio 3 Hosts apply the House Rules in moderating the Radio 3 message board?
From Southendian - Radio 3 Host

I thought it might be helpful to the Radio 3 message board community to offer some general insight into how Hosts interpret the message board House Rules.

The House Rules cannot cover everything and are designed to give Hosts some flexibility of interpretation in their moderating decisions.

When deciding whether to remove, or 'mod-off', a post and it's not a clear cut case of rule-breaking Hosts take into account the context of the thread and spirit of a post.

The Golden Rule "Respect others" is also key.

We aim always to make sure the boards remain stimulating and welcoming for the majority of users and this intention always informs difficult moderating decisions.

Host also are acutely aware of the need to appear fair and even-handed when moderating individual posts.

It's sometimes difficult to resolve these two aims.

When a message is removed the poster is sent an explanation which normally includes a standard message referring to a House Rule the posting has broken. Inevitably standard explanations will sometimes be clumsy.

If a poster disagrees with a decision to remove their post we aim to reply promptly; where needed we'll offer a more specific explanation for the removal. Hosts are not always able to give a prompt reply: with limited resources our priority is always to maintain quality of service to the majority of licence fee payers.

Sometimes Hosts will reinstate messages.

Sometimes we ask for posters to be generous and allow us to uphold the removal of their message in the best interest of the community even though it may not be a clear cut case of a House Rule being breached.
Often posts that contain quotes from removed posts are themselves removed as we don't have the time to edit out the offending quote.

An amount of cynicism is healthy - and often encountered on the Radio 3 boards - but there is a certain amount of trust and good faith needed to make this all work. This ebbs and flows according to subject matter of moderated posts, personal proclivities of community members and popularity of Hosting decisions.

I hope this provides a broader view to established and new users alike of how Hosting works on the Radio 3 boards.
