Problems with the picture or sound may be caused by interference, a problem with your aerial or TV set, or work at the transmitter.

Important: checking, repairing or installing an aerial
We suggest that any work on your aerial is carried out by a professional aerial installer registered with the CAI (Confederation of Aerial Industries).
Snowy picture, distorted sound, no picture or sound
A snowy or fuzzy picture, distorted sound, jumbled teletext or no picture or sound are all signs that the signal getting to your TV set is not strong enough.
Check your TV set is working properly. Play a video or DVD (if you have the equipment), and make sure the set is tuned to the correct channels (see your manual for more information).
Check the aerial lead is securely plugged into the TV set or, if you have them, the video or DVD recorder. Check the connections between the recorder and the TV.
If possible, check another TV set connected to a different aerial - for example, at a neighbour's - to see if it is also affected.
If only your set is affected, your aerial may be broken or out of alignment.
Ghosting
Ghosting is a double image on the TV screen. It happens when a signal bounces off solid objects (such as hills or tall buildings) or reflect off shiny surfaces such as the sea, creating a second, delayed signal. Adjusting or replacing your TV aerial may help:
Change the angle of your aerial so that it is not pointing directly at the transmitter.
Alternatively, replace it with a more directional aerial that focuses on the main signal and ignores others.
Patterns, dots, flashes, buzzing, clicks, loss of colour
These are all signs of interference, caused by electrical equipment or radio communications. See Interference.
Smooth, evenly spaced horizontal bars
This 'Venetian blind' effect is the result of co-channel interference produced by unusual atmospheric conditions. See The effects of weather.
