Carlisle's Tom Farrell wants to savour his first major championship experience with Team England at next month's 2014 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow.

The 5,000m runner missed out on the 2012 Olympics in London because of injury but has been named in the squad alongside Olympic champion Mo Farah.

"With it being my first championships I just want to go there and enjoy it," Farrell told BBC Radio Cumbria.

"I'd love to perform well but I don't want to set a standard on myself."

He added: "As long as I go there and do everything I can then I'll be completely happy.

"My main aim and goal is to take in the environment and the experience, the build-up and the pressure for bigger championships in the future."

Border Harriers runner Farrell, 23, has been combining his training with study at Oklahoma State University in the United States since he missed out on the London Games.

Currently the 11th-fastest British 5,000m runner of all-time, Farrell was disappointed to miss out in 2012 but has been lifted by his elevation into the squad for Glasgow.

"I had the qualifying time in 2012 but hadn't been to the trials and I found out I had a stress fracture," Farrell continued.

"Paul Nixon, the ex-England wicket-keeper, messaged me on Twitter to say something along the lines of 'don't worry, once you bounce back it makes it all the sweeter'.

"He's right. It's been a long 18 months and there's no better way to kick off the summer than with a Commonwealths selection."
