Is Australian cricket on the back foot?

The Ashes starts on Wednesday and things are not looking good for the Australians, according to bookmakers.

They are entering the competition with the home side tipped to win. So what has happened to Aussie cricket and Aussie sport in general? How is their losing streak affecting the national psyche?

Jarrod Kimber, writer for Cricinfo - the world's largest single sport website - told the Today programme's Evan Davis that "Australians have more things to worry about these days."

Alison Mitchell, commentator for BBC Radio's Test Match Special, said that it's not as bad as it may seem but conceded that the Australian self deprecating sense of humour is now coming into play when it comes to sport.

First broadcast on BBC Radio 4's Today programme on Wednesday 10 July 2013.
