Match scorecard

Matt Coles took 10 wickets in the match as Hampshire eased to an innings victory over Essex in Southampton.

Resuming on 44-0 in their second innings, still 209 runs behind, the visitors lost four wickets in the first eight overs of the morning.

Coles (4-83), who took 6-71 in the first innings, and James Tomlinson (4-83) tore through the Essex line-up, with Graham Napier's 53 the top score.

Hampshire bowled them out for 218 to win by an innings and 31 runs.

Coles's 10-wicket haul was the first of his career and followed his 5-74 against Leicestershire last week, while fellow seam bowler Tomlinson passed 300 first-class wickets in the match.

Graham Napier became the first man to score 1,000 runs and take 80 wickets in a county season, in all competitions, since Neil Carter managed the same feat for Warwickshire in 2005.

BBC Radio Essex's Nick Gledhill:

"A heavy defeat to end the campaign. Essex missed their chance to bat in the best conditions of the match, which a confident Hampshire line-up exploited in the absence of David Masters and Reece Topley.

"Graham Napier was then the only man to pass 50 in either Essex innings, appropriately underlining his status as the county's player of the year.

"It was the summer of the 20 all out but Essex will be encouraged by their response to that. They were much improved in the second half and must now look to take that form into next season."
