The first day of the game between Essex and Hampshire at Colchester was abandoned without a ball being bowled.

Play was called off before 3pm after consistent heavy rain in the East.

Hampshire announced the passing of former player and club legend Peter Sainsbury, aged 80, who was part of the Championship winning sides in 1961 and 1973, before play was due to begin.

The all-rounder spent 22 years with the club, scoring 20,176 first-class runs and took 1,316 first-class wickets.

Sainsbury also had an extensive and successful one-day career, where he took an impressive 202 wickets in 165 limited-overs matches and made 2,079 runs.

He was named as one of Wisden's Cricketers of the Year in 1974.
