As it happened

  1. 2250:

Right, that's it from me and our team for tonight. Thanks for getting involved and hope you enjoyed the drama as much as I did. I'm back on Saturday with Aimee Lewis for a busy afternoon of Premier League and Football League action. See you then.

  2. 2247:

It's all over in Romania, where Steaua Bucharest beat Ajax 4-2 on penalties to set up a last-16 tie with Chelsea. Surely the Blues will fancy their chances in that one.

Jim, Belfast on text: "Not sure what planet Brendan is on. Unless something totally bizarre happens the team that goes through after a two-legged tie deserves to. Nothing overly strange happened in the 180 minutes. Deluded."

  4. 2242:

History is made - a knockout tie in the Europa League proper goes to penalties for the first time. Steaua Bucharest are battling it out from the spot for a place in the last 16.

Newcastle midfielder Sylvain Marveaux: "Great win tonight. Massive fans support again away from home. Back to Newcastle now :)"

  6. 2236:

There are two minutes remaining in Bucharest in the game between Steaua and Ajax, where it's 2-0 to the Romanians on the night and 2-2 on aggregate. Could we be looking at a first penalty shootout in the competition's four-year history?

  7. 2235:

Chelsea manager Rafael Benitez, speaking after his side's late aggregate win over Sparta Prague: "I was a little bit disappointed during the game because we had so many chances but, in the end, we deserved to score. We had 60% of possession, 22 attempts. We knew they were a good team, it was difficult to stop them sometimes but we were doing a great job pushing and defending. I think for the team, he [Fernando Torres] was great in terms of workrate."

  8. 2231:

Now, a word of advice for any disgruntled fans thinking about calling a football phone-in to express dissatisfaction with their team's performance tonight. Rule number one: make sure you know whether your side has won, drawn or lost. Otherwise, you just sound a little bit silly.

Si on text: "Has everyone forgotten the Torres goal against Barcelona in last season's CL? Give the guy a break, we all have bad days at the office."

Wendy, Cambridge on text: "I'm a Man Utd fan but I actually feel really sorry for Liverpool and their fans. Such a stirring fightback yet they still go out."

Liam, Stockport on text: "Let's get one thing straight. A near comeback but ultimately defeat by Zenit in no way signals a bright future for Liverpool. Long, long way to go."

  10. 2225:
    THE LAST 16

So what next for the three British teams left in the competition? Tottenham will play Inter, Newcastle will face Anzhi Makhachkala and Chelsea will take on either Ajax or Steaua Bucharest - that game is still level in extra time. Not bad-looking matches if you ask me.

Roy, Dundee on text: "Out of all competitions by mid-Feb and 30 points behind in the league, yet Tony (2210) tells us 'it looks like a bright future for Liverpool'. What kind of logic is that?"

Mohamed, Kidderminster on text: "Just scored your third goal and what does Rodgers do? Disrupt the flow and rhythm by making a double substitution. Poor management. Got it all wrong today."

Jordan, Birmingham on text: Why no mention of Suarez stamping on the Zenit player towards the end? Shows his good, bad and ugly side."

  12. 2221:

Chelsea captain John Terry speaking after his side reached the last 16: "We're delighted to go through. It wasn't our best performances but we're in the next round and we're happy with that. They had two counter-attacks in the last five minutes, which is not good at all. Overall, it wasn't the best but we're happy with that. We kept going. For the first 80 minutes nothing went for us, we had a lot of attempts on goal but the persistence of the lads was fantastic. We're very disappointed to be out of the Champions League but that's enough motivation for us to kick on in this competition."

  13. 2217:
    Eden Hazard

Eden Hazard was left on the bench for Chelsea but came on to devastating effect. A tactical masterstroke by manager Rafael Benitez?

  14. 2216:
Liverpool 3-1 Zenit St Petersburg (agg 3-3)

Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers on his side's away goals loss to Zenit St Petersburg: "I thought we were incredible. Obviously two down from the first leg and to concede again you might think the tie was over. I think we showed our quality. We should have had a penalty and we're thoroughly disappointed. We lost the battle but we won the war in terms of going forward."

  15. 2214:
Metalist Kharkiv 0-1 Newcastle (agg 0-1)

Newcastle manager Alan Pardew speaking after his team's 1-0 aggregate win against Metalist Kharkiv: "It's an important result for us. We lost Cheick Tiote just before the game, but Vurnon Anita did an excellent job coming in late. He only knew an hour before we kicked off that he was going to play. With Hatem Ben Arfa coming back and Cheick to add to that side, I really feel as though we can give this competition a good go."

  16. 2212:
    Lyon 1-1 Tottenham (agg 2-3)

Tottenham manager Andre Villas-Boas on his side's 3-2 aggregate win over Lyon: "If you look at the number of chances Lyon had over the two legs it would not have been fair if they had gone through. We didn't play well in the first half, but in the second half we were the better team, created chances, and were rewarded with the goal in the end."

  17. 2210:

Newcastle will face Russian side Anzhi Makhachkala in the final 16 after they beat Hannover 4-2 on aggregate. The match ended 1-1 with Lacina Traore equalising in the ninth minute of injury time.

Live scores for all of tonight's Europa League matches can be found on the BBC website.

Michael on text: "Ref Scotty 22:03 - They were booing Benitez for not taking off Torres - Sparta's best defender."

Tony, Northampton on text: "If Liverpool played with as much passion and determination as they did tonight, who knows how well they might have been doing? Unlucky tonight, but looks like a bright future for LFC."

Bill, Hereford on text: "Wasted opportunities in the first leg, an all too common mistake in the second, despite their valiant efforts Liverpool deserve to go out."

@everydaypundit: "Well thank goodness for a bit of quality. That's what big money should buy you, watch and learn Torres. Well done Hazard."

@Liamreddi: "Chelsea's progression with Benitez is literally like running a marathon with weights on your feet. Just slowing down potential."

@MilkyJoHo: "First Dembele then Hazard... Those Belgians love a late goal."

@BenHarrison1984: "If I had a pound for every time I read 'Tonight's not been Torres's night', I'd nearly be able to afford him"

  21. 2205:

Levante secure their place in the last 16 with a 4-0 aggregate win over Olympiakos, Fenerbahce beat Bate Borisov 1-0, Bordeaux go through with a 2-1 win over Dynamo Kiev and Benfica beat Bayer Leverkusen 3-1 on aggregate, The match between Steaua Bucharest and Ajax stands at 2-0 to Steaua and the game goes into extra time, with the winner facing Chelsea.

Live scores for all of tonight's Europa League matches can be found on the BBC website.

  22. 2203:

The Europa League has its detractors, but that was a great night of football, with high drama in all four matches, and three English teams through to the last 16.

Scotty B on text: "Were the Chelsea fans booing Benitez for bringing Hazard on a few minutes ago?"

Chris, Leigh-on-Sea on text: "A good LFC performance - but just too much to do after Hulk's goal. Didn't quite understand the substitutions, bringing on Assaidi and Shelvey when the 11 on the pitch had scored 3 without reply?! They're not exactly prolific goalscorers!"

Glen, Kinsley on text: "Proud of my team tonight, YNWA."

@A_Will83: "Liverpool were on top, Rodgers makes some subs and we stutter. He could've waited and we would've got that 4th goal."

@Jake_Edwards17: "Liverpool had 30 mins to only score one more, the Liverpool of old would have put that game to bed, still not there."

@naitdogg: "Brendan killed that game by changing a team that scores 3 goals and pressing for more, Shelvey useless tonight."

  25. 2159:
FULL-TIME - CHELSEA THROUGH TO LAST 16- Chelsea 1-1 Sparta Prague (agg 2-1)

That Eden Hazard goal was virtually the last kick of the game, and what a kick it was. In fairness, Chelsea deserved that victory - they created countless chances and kept going until the end, eventually wearing down their stubborn opponents.

  26. 2157:
GOAL- Chelsea 1-1 Sparta Prague (agg 2-1) - Eden Hazard

Anything Spurs can do, Chelsea can do too. Eden Hazard finds space on the left side of the area and smashes the ball in with a brilliant left-footed drive not too dissimilar to Mousa Dembele's effort for Spurs earlier.

  27. 2156:
FULL-TIME - LIVERPOOL ELIMINATED- Liverpool 3-1 Zenit St Petersburg (agg 3-3)

You can't help but admire the way Liverpool played after falling behind on the night, but ultimately they left themselves with too much to do.

  28. 2155:
Liverpool 3-1 Zenit St Petersburg (agg 3-3)

"You'll Never Walk Alone" rings around Anfield, but the ball is at the wrong end and this is proving frustrating for the Reds.

  29. 2154:
CLOSE!- Chelsea 0-1 Sparta Prague (agg 1-1)

Cesar Azpilicueta is the latest to try his luck for Chelsea. Sparta fail to clear a Juan Mata free-kick and the ball falls to the Spaniard, but he shoots wide. Decent effort that.

  30. 2153:
INJURY TIME- Liverpool 3-1 Zenit St Petersburg (agg 3-3)

Three minutes of added time at Anfield.

  31. 2153:
Liverpool 3-1 Zenit St Petersburg (agg 3-3)

Liverpool are probing but Zenit are defending deep and soaking up the pressure.

  32. 2151:
Liverpool 3-1 Zenit St Petersburg (agg 3-3)

Zenit will be happy with how they're defending right now - for the first time in the game they're looking reasonably assured at the back. Two minutes of normal time remaining at Anfield.

Matt, Oxford on text: "I know many essentially see this as Champions League-Lite, but it's as exciting as any cup competition I've ever seen. Tonight has been a great advertisement for the Europa League."

Mario, Fermucini on text: "Can I have a shout out to my Napoli team who are crashing out in phenomenal style losing 5-0 on aggregate to Plzen."

@crobs89: "If Torres wasn't bought for £50m he would have been released by now, he's an absolute liability."

@Asmeria: "I'd rather have Heskey than Torres up front right now."

  35. 2149:
Chelsea 0-1 Sparta Prague (agg 1-1)

It's all Chelsea at Stamford Bridge. Frank Lampard - rested for this match - looks on from the stands. I bet Rafael Benitez is regretting not having the midfielder in the squad right about now.

  36. 2148:

Bayer Leverkusen's joy was short-lived as Benfica score again to take a 2-1 lead on the night and 3-1 on aggregate. Nemanja Matic has scored the goal to all but confirm their place in the last 16. Steaua Bucharest have scored to level their tie at home to Ajax, Vlad Chiricheş converting to make it 2-0 on the night and 2-2 on aggregate.

Live scores for all of tonight's Europa League matches can be found on the BBC website.

  37. 2147:
CLOSE!- Chelsea 0-1 Sparta Prague (agg 1-1)

Nearly the breakthrough for Chelsea, but Eden Hazard's header is well saved low to his right by keeper Tomas Vaclik.

  38. 2146:
SUBSTITUTION- Liverpool 3-1 Zenit St Petersburg (agg 3-3)

Raheem Sterling replaces Stewart Downing as Liverpool make their final change of the night.

  39. 2145:
Liverpool 3-1 Zenit St Petersburg (agg 3-3)
Luis Suarez was on the scoresheet for Liverpool

Is there still time for another celebration from Luis Suarez? Another goal for the striker and this display will go down in Anfield folklore.

Emma on text: "Downing set up three of Boro's four comeback goals against Steaua seven years ago. Sadly the quality of his delivery tonight hasn't matched that."

@Rob_pugh: "I shudder whenever Reina gets near the ball. Great keeper at one point but too many mistakes."

@JohnnyMagrinho: "Now that save by Reina could just turn out to be one of his most important this season. Brilliant composure to say the least."

  42. 2139:

Hannover have given themselves hope of progressing as they take a 1-0 lead over Anzhi Makhachkala thanks to a goal from Sergio Pinto. The German side now trail 3-2 with 20 minutes to go. Elsewhere Plzen have scored again against Napoli, Stanislav Tecl scoring to give them a 5-0 aggregate lead. Bayer Leverkusen have also scored against Benfica through Andre Schurrle, to make it 1-1 on the night but they still trail 2-1 on aggregate.

Live scores for all of tonight's Europa League matches can be found on the BBC website.

  43. 2142:

Ten minutes to go at Anfield, just under 15 at Stamford Bridge. As things stand Liverpool are going out and Chelsea are heading for extra time.

  44. 2141:
Liverpool 3-1 Zenit St Petersburg (agg 3-3)

Another chance for Liverpool, but Daniel Agger heads wide from Stewart Downing's dangerous corner.

  45. 2140:
Chelsea 0-1 Sparta Prague (agg 1-1)

Sparta Prague spurn a good chance to go ahead, Vaclev Kadlec shooting wide when goalscorer David Lafata is begging for the ball in the area. Ramires then shoots wide at the other end as the games begins to get stretched.

@KevinOnEarth: "Unfortunately, neither Shelvey nor Assaidi have the mentality for this kind of limelight. I can see LFC coming short still."

@msan168: "Conceding the away goal liberates you to play. What you feared has happened, so what else can go wrong? let's attack."

@henrywalmsley: "Fulham 4-1 Juventus will always be the ultimate Europa League comeback."

  47. 2138:
CLOSE!- Liverpool 3-1 Zenit St Petersburg (agg 3-3)

Jonjo Shelvey smashes an effort into the side netting when the ball bounces to him 12 yards out. This has turned into a thriller of a match. Will there be more drama? Liverpool have less than 15 minutes left to find another goal.

Josh on text: "Who in their right mind would take off Oscar? Best player in a Chelsea shirt all night."

David, Liverpool on text: "With Neto on the field for Zenit, just thought it would be good if we could still call on Billy Liddell."

  49. 2137:
CLOSE!- Liverpool 3-1 Zenit St Petersburg (agg 3-3)

Liverpool are lucky to escape as Jose Enrique sloppily gifts possession to Aleksandr Anyukov, whose shot from range is deflected over. Seconds earlier Pepe Reina had to be at his best to divert a low Hulk drive to safety.

  50. 2136:
Chelsea 0-1 Sparta Prague (agg 1-1)
    Chelsea striker Fernando Torres

It really is not Fernando Torres's night so far. He gets in the way of a rasping shot from Ramires that is on target, the ball hitting the striker square in the chest. Eden Hazard has replaced Oscar, with a few boos greeting that decision. But there's better from Torres, who sets up Victor Moses who forces a save with a deflected volley from the edge of the area.

@7five7: "Europe and Liverpool. Made for each other."

@Ada0690: "Whether we lose this on away goals or Zenit score again. It's a performance to be proud of."

@sjc961: "If anyone other than Steven Gerrard scores Liverpool's fourth, that's just selfish."

  52. 2135:
Liverpool 3-1 Zenit St Petersburg (agg 3-3)

So close for Liverpool. Vyacheslav Malafeev flaps at a cross from Jose Enrique, the ball falls to Steven Gerrard on the edge of the box and the midfielder hits his shot into the ground. It loops up and is heading in, but Malafeev springs to his right to divert it away.

  53. 2133:
Liverpool 3-1 Zenit St Petersburg (agg 3-3)

The angle didn't really favour the right-footer, but try to stop Luis Suarez taking it. The forward strikes it low, but keeper Vyacheslav Malafeev parries it to safety. Twenty minutes remaining.

  54. 2129:

There's finally been a goal at Benfica, where the home side lead Bayer Leverkusen 1-0 and 2-0 on aggregate. The goal by Ola John has been described on Twitter as 'outrageous ' and 'amazing', so one to keep an eye out for.

Live scores for all of tonight's Europa League matches can be found on the BBC website.

  55. 2131:
Liverpool 3-1 Zenit St Petersburg (agg 3-3)

Do not look away! Luis Suarez is lining up a free-kick on the 18-yard line. Hat-trick of free-kick goals?

  56. 2130:
CLOSE!- Liverpool 3-1 Zenit St Petersburg (agg 3-3)

Hulk sends in a free-kick from distance which swerves and dips and looks to be going goalwards, only to drift wide at the last minute.

  57. 2130:
Chelsea 0-1 Sparta Prague (agg 1-1)

Chelsea are probing - remember their game is going to extra time as it stands - but they haven't been clinical enough in front of goal. They've certainly had the chances.

@Fronk_91: "Not a single club in the world can produce a European night like Liverpool can."

@JasonBradshaw73: "That Suarez ain't bad, is he? Perhaps Chelsea should put in a £50m bid for him this summer. Oh, hang on."

@akudemeka: "Chelsea fans would not want to remember that part of the money they paid to Liverpool for Torres was used to acquire Suarez."

Mark on text: "We need to retrain Torres as a defender! He is so good at keeping the ball out of the goal."

Marc, Cheshire on text: "Sorry Liverpool fans, but Suarez is too good to be playing Europa League football! Barca or Madrid calling?"

Allan, London on text: "A Gerrard piledriver and then the night is complete."

  60. 2128:
Liverpool 3-1 Zenit St Petersburg (agg 3-3)

It's been one-way traffic at Anfield since the break, but Liverpool need to be aware of the threat of Hulk and Axel Witsel, who are showing touches of class when they get possession. It's not happening all that often, though.

  61. 2127:
Liverpool 3-1 Zenit St Petersburg (agg 3-3)

Liverpool have more than 25 minutes to get the goal they need. Where's your money, Reds fans?

Match Of The Day presenter Gary Lineker: "Wow Suarez is very special."

  63. 2126:
Chelsea 0-1 Sparta Prague (agg 1-1)

John Terry goes close for Chelsea at a free-kick, flicking the ball goalwards with his back to goal but drawing a save from Tomas Vaclik. That would have been a fine one for the scrapbook, but the tie is still level.

@theactualnuge: "If you're are going to take a free-kick off Gerrard, that is how you do it. Take a bow."

@craigmoore02: "As a Man United fan it's always hard to cheer on Liverpool. However as a neutral football fan I do love a good comeback."

@Nicholl94: "Hard to say but if Chelsea had a Luis Suarez, they'd being going through with ease right now."

Phil, Poole on text: "Roberto Carlos would be proud."

Callum on text: "My girlfriend just text saying her train gets in at 9.40 (for a lift), which will be during the last 10 mins, could be a cold walk home!"

  66. 2124:
SUBSTITUTION- Liverpool 3-1 Zenit St Petersburg (agg 3-3)

Double change for Liverpool, with Oussame Assaidi and Jonjo Shelvey on for Jordan Henderson and Joe Allen. Brendan Rodgers has made his move.

  67. 2121:
GOAL- Liverpool 3-1 Zenit St Petersburg (agg 3-3) - Luis Suarez (59 mins)

Game most definitely on! A moment of magic from Luis Suarez, who sends a brilliant 25-yard free-kick curling into the right corner. Anfield erupts, and you'd probably say Liverpool are favourites right now. They only need one more goal.

  68. 2120:
Liverpool 2-1 Zenit St Petersburg (agg 2-3)
    Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers

Plenty for Brendan Rodgers to ponder with just over 30 minutes remaining at Anfield. What can he do to find the two goals his side require?

  69. 2117:

It looks all over for Napoli who now train Plzen 1-0 on the night and 4-0 on aggregate. Jan Koravik has scored the goal for the Czech side, who will play either Bate Borisov or Fenerbachce.

Live scores for all of tonight's Europa League matches can be found on the BBC website.

  70. 2119:
Chelsea 0-1 Sparta Prague (agg 1-1)

Chelsea are on the front foot and twice go close within the space of 60 seconds. Victor Moses's long-range drive flashes wide before Fernando Torres races beyond the Sparta defence and tries to clip the ball over Tomas Vaclik, but the keeper saves well. Torres is enduring a frustrating night, but he did well to fashion that chance.

@sqwarksyboy123: "Where is Neil Mellor when we need him."

@AlexHarris91: "Crosses flying in, long balls and high pressure, just the sort of night Andy Carroll was made for."

@xMGreen: "I'm going to stick my neck out and stay Stewart Downing will score a 90th minute winner to make it 4-3 on aggregate."

  72. 2117:
Liverpool 2-1 Zenit St Petersburg (agg 2-3)

More positive play from Liverpool, as Stewart Downing skips away from his marker but he can't pick out a red shirt in the middle.

Dave, Putney on text: "If Roman is pondering life without Lampard then I hope he has one eye on tonight's match."

Ian, Watford on text: "What exactly are the extra officials behind the goals for? Yet to see one give a decision or stop the wrestling from a corner."

@uli_engel: "It's strange. We went all out to get Torres when we had Anelka, Kalou, Sturridge and Drogba on the books. Laughing Stock of EUROPE."

@Rickylap: "Benitez fallen for it again, when will he learn? Need to start a strong team then take players off once its safe."

@runworldguide: "As a Middlesbrough fan, brings back memories of us needing to score 4 at home on a Thursday night. We did it. Twice."

  75. 2113:
PENALTY APPEAL- Liverpool 2-1 Zenit St Petersburg (agg 2-3)

Lucky, lucky Zenit. The ball bounces in the area and Tomas Hubocan goes to chest it, but leans in and looked to control with his arm. That could easily have been a spot-kick.

  76. 2112:
HITS THE WOODWORK- Chelsea 0-1 Sparta Prague (agg 1-1)

Nearly the perfect start to the half for Chelsea, who pour forward in numbers. Oscar feeds Ramires on the right and the Brazilian crashes a powerful drive against the post from the edge of the box. Good positive start from the Premier League side.

  77. 2111:
Liverpool 2-1 Zenit St Petersburg (agg 2-3)

How do Liverpool play this? Go gung-ho and risk conceding a goal which would surely end their hopes? Or bide their team and hope patience pays dividends? A tricky balancing act for manager Brendan Rodgers.

  78. 2110:
    KICK-OFF- Chelsea 0-1 Sparta Prague (agg 1-1)

A little late, but game on again at the Bridge.

Tom Castle: "Zenit still recovering from two-month winter break. Sterling time to test their fitness by bringing on Raheem."

@Tish1067: "So far Torres has missed with his left/right foot and his head. The perfect misses."

@Adw92Williams: "With Liverpool attacking the kop end, never mind the two goals the entire Anfield Road might be sucked into the goal."

  80. 2109:
Chelsea 0-1 Sparta Prague (agg 1-1)

They're a few minutes behind at Stamford Bridge, where the players are still in the tunnel.

  81. 2108:
KICK-OFF- Liverpool 2-1 Zenit St Petersburg (agg 2-3)

Zenit make two changes at the break - one enforced, one tactical. The injured Nicolas Lombaerts is replaced by Italian international Domenico Criscito, and Viktor Fayzulin is on for Danny. Back under way.

David, Oxford on text: "All well and good criticising Chelsea's attacking play, but there are some serious problems with the defending at the moment. Our centre-backs are no longer consistent, we don't regularly keep clean sheets. I don't know what is going on with Cahill at the moment, he was so solid at the beginning of the season."

John, Belfast on text: "Ref Dave 20:52 - So how is Chelsea performance tonight in the first half anything to do with Rafa? I suppose if he changes it at half-time and Chelsea go on to win he won't get any credit? Don't know why anyone would want to mange you ungrateful lot.."

Stephen, Skelmersdale on text: "Nobody delivers more entertainment than Liverpool on important European nights, no matter what year it is!"

  83. 2103:

Newcastle are still waiting to find out who they will play in the last 16 and with the score goalless between Hannover and Anzhi Makhachkala the Russians still lead 3-1 on aggregate. Chelsea are all level in their tie with Sparta Prague and the winners will face either Ajax or Steaua Bucharest. Steaua lead 1-0 on the night but trail 2-1 on aggregate.

Live scores for all of tonight's Europa League matches can be found on the BBC website.

  84. 2102:

I don't know about anyone else, but I can't wait for the second halves in these games. They're both beautifully poised. Whose position would you rather be in - Liverpool behind on aggregate but very much in the ascendancy, or Chelsea level on aggregate but in danger of a shock defeat after a straightforward away win in the first leg?

  85. 2055:

Fenerbahce take the lead on the stroke of half-time against the 10-men of Bate Borisov. Baroni Christian has scored the only goal of the tie from the penalty spot, so the Turkish side now lead 1-0 on aggregate.

Live scores for all of tonight's Europa League matches can be found on the BBC website.

Venk, Newcastle on text: "Ref 17:59 Ryan - Chelsea could be the only British team going out tonight at this rate."

Matt on text: "As a Chelsea fan, I'm not too concerned about our potential exit from the Europa League, with Torres up front we're never going to get far are we?"

Alex, Canterbury on text: "Liverpool attacking the Kop in the 2nd half.."

Stephen Cheatley: "Hulk looks even more scary than the David Banner version!"

Charlie: "I'm going to throw this out there and say I'm enjoying the Europa League more than the Champions League this season. Fascinating."

Gregory Thacker: "Fernando Torres has had the perfect hat trick of misses! Left foot, right foot and header!"

  88. 2057:
Liverpool 2-1 Zenit St Petersburg (agg 2-3)

Matt Monaghan reports: "It has been a thrilling first half and the Anfield crowd roars its approval as the teams trudge off. Liverpool began at a high tempo and refused to be daunted after they gifted Hulk what looked like a killer third goal in the tie. Luis Suarez and Joe Allen's strikes have given them hope as they look forward to attacking the Kop after the break. Brendan Rodgers's men need to score two more unanswered goals to go through, but with Liverpool's history of European Lazarus acts, it would be very risky for Zenit to think the job is anywhere near done."

Hulk (right) scores for Zenit at Liverpool
  89. 2055:
Chelsea 0-1 Sparta Prague (agg 1-1)

Tim Oscroft reports: "Chelsea's confident start was undone by some quick thinking from Sparta Prague at a free-kick, with David Lafata slotting home from 10 yards. Not a great night so far for Fernando Torres, who has missed chances with his left foot, his right foot and his head."

David Lafata celebrates scoring for Sparta Prague
  90. 2053:
    HALF-TIME- Chelsea 0-1 Sparta Prague (agg 1-1)
  91. 2053:
Chelsea 0-1 Sparta Prague (agg 1-1)

I might just save this entry and copy and paste it. Fernando Torres has a chance, Fernando Torres heads over.

  92. 2047:

Finally more goals in the Europa League and it's come at Steaua Bucharest where Iasmin Latovlevici has scored for the home side against Ajax. The tie is now in the balance as Ajax lead 2-1 on aggregate. In France Bordeaux lead Dynamo Kiev 1-0 on the night and 2-1 on aggregate. Cheick Diabate is the scorer after he drills home a corner.

Live scores for all of tonight's Europa League matches can be found on the BBC website.

  93. 2052:
HALF-TIME- Liverpool 2-1 Zenit St Petersburg (agg 2-3)

Benjamin Edmonds: "Joe Allen hasn't been great this season, but credit where it's due, he's been excellent tonight, deserves a goal."

Match of the Day presenter Gary Lineker on Twitter:

"Allen with a key goal before half-time. Cracking game."

Joe on text: "Jose Enrique is easily the most consistent Liverpool player, top player!"

Dave, London on text: "Chelsea will go out tonight. Rafa will give his usual, nasal post match interview about how "we have to keep pushing in the competitions we are in - top teams need to win matches". Yes Rafa, we do - when you get the sack we may even win a few!"

Rich, Guildford on text: "I'm disappointed you don't have an 'Injured Referee' graphic. That needs sorting."

  97. 2051:
Liverpool 2-1 Zenit St Petersburg (agg 2-3)

What a game this is turning into. Liverpool force another corner as the pressure on Zenit mounts, but they can't convert. Nicolas Lombaerts is off the pitch for the visitors injured.

  98. 2048:
GOAL- Liverpool 2-1 Zenit St Petersburg (agg 2-3) - Joe Allen (43 mins)

Liverpool have their goal and, as you would expect, the volume level increases. Liverpool work the opening brilliantly, with Jose Enrique and Jordan Henderson playing a one-two, the left-back crossing to Joe Allen and the midfielder converting at the second attempt after his first effort - a header - is saved. Game on for sure.

  99. 2047:
Liverpool 1-1 Zenit St Petersburg (agg 1-3)

We're into the final few minutes of the first half at Anfield, where a goal would transform the mood around the ground at half-time. They're pressing, but can they get another one?

  100. 2044:
GREAT SAVE!- Chelsea 0-1 Sparta Prague (agg 1-1)

That's a great stop from Tomas Vaclik to deny Juan Mata. The Spaniard is played in on the left side of the box by Ramires, controls beautifully and shoots from eight yards, but the keeper somehow spoons the ball over. Five minutes left of the first half.

James, Surrey on text: "Which is quicker: Jamie Carragher's turning circle or the formation of an oxbow lake?"

Tom on text: "Guess where I'm talking about when I say "I miss this atmosphere!" The fans are not disappointing at Anfield!"

Matt, London on text: "A year ago Chelsea overturned a 3-1 deficit in the CL. Tonight, they are getting outplayed by a team 3rd in the Czech league. How far away Munich seems."

Benjamin Downey: "Zenit look so dangerous going forward but if Liverpool can get the next one before half-time it is game on."

Former Liverpool striker Michael Owen on Twitter:

"This isn't over! The Anfield atmosphere will see to that. Another goal before the hour mark and it could get tasty!"

  104. 2043:

There are no goals elsewhere in Europe but Bate Borisov are facing an uphill struggle at Fenerbahce. Goalless from the first leg but the Belarusian side are down to 10 men after Dmiri Baga was sent off after just four minutes. Fenerbahce survived 86 minutes with 10 men in the first leg, after Raul Meireles was sent off, but can their opponents do the same?

Live scores for all of tonight's Europa League matches can be found on the BBC website.

  105. 2043:
Liverpool 1-1 Zenit St Petersburg (agg 1-3)

This game is wide open at Anfield. Luis Suarez has seen plenty of the ball as Liverpool press, but the Reds are having to push men forward and Zenit look dangerous on the break.

  106. 2040:
INJURED REFEREE- Chelsea 0-1 Sparta Prague (agg 1-1)

Play stops at Stamford Bridge as the referee needs treatment for a hand injury. He looks like he'll be OK though, and we're back under way.

  107. 2040:
Liverpool 1-1 Zenit St Petersburg (agg 1-3)

That's lovely play by Zenit. Hulk sends the ball into Danny, who controls on his chest and volleys just wide. Liverpool are going to have to be at their best to stop the Russians scoring again - they look very dangerous in attack.

  108. 2038:
Chelsea 0-1 Sparta Prague (agg 1-1)

Chelsea are under pressure from Sparta Prague, with Marek Matejovsky forcing Petr Cech to make a save low to his right with a sharp shot. The Czech side have had a succession of corners in the last few minutes, and from another, Tomas Zapotocny fires a volley just over the bar.

  109. 2037:
Liverpool 1-1 Zenit St Petersburg (agg 1-3)

That said, they're looking shaky at the back. Pepe Reina almost gets himself into trouble with the ball at his feet, but the Spaniard gets away with it and Liverpool survive.

  110. 2035:
Liverpool 1-1 Zenit St Petersburg (agg 1-3)

The momentum's with Liverpool now. They've forced a couple of corners in a row. If they get another one this could turn into a classic.

Mugasa Mwenda: "The spirit of Istanbul needs to wake up now!"

Sham Gallagher: "Suarez is a machine. Great free kick."

  112. 2034:
Chelsea 0-1 Sparta Prague (agg 1-1)

Chelsea have looked urgent since Prague's goal, but Juan Mata wastes a chance, scooping a free-kick from 25 yards out a long way over the bar.

Sam Woods: "Is it just me, or are Chelsea sitting back, and trying to play on the break? Haven't touched the ball for 20 minutes."

Jay: "Looks like Jamie Carragher has been taking footballing lessons from Gareth Barry."

  114. 2032:
GOAL- Liverpool 1-1 Zenit St Petersburg (agg 1-3) - Luis Suarez (28 mins)

I told you to believe, Liverpool fans. Great reward for Daniel Agger's ambition as Luis Suarez takes the free-kick from 25 yards and drills it low through a porous Zenit wall and crashing into the back of the net. Game on?

  115. 2031:
Liverpool 0-1 Zenit St Petersburg (agg 0-3)

That's the spirit, Liverpool. Daniel Agger bursts forward from defence and is unceremoniously dumped to the turf. Free-kick to the Reds.

  116. 2030:
Chelsea 0-1 Sparta Prague (agg 1-1)
    Chelsea interim manager Rafael Benitez

Chelsea manager Rafel Benitex suddenly has plenty to ponder. Imagine owner Roman Abramovich's reaction if the Blues go out of Europe's second competition to the unfancied Czechs.

  117. 2028:
Liverpool 0-1 Zenit St Petersburg (agg 0-3)

Bad news Liverpool fans - your side now need to score four times in the remaining 65 minutes or it's all over. I can offer you hope, though. In 2010 Fulham were three goals behind on aggregate at almost exactly this stage of their tie with Juventus, but came back to go through. Can Liverpool do the same?

Bill, Hereford on text: "Mistakes have been Liverpool's worst enemy all season and it's exactly what they didn't need tonight. Liverpool are out."

Chris, Montrose on text: "Let's not forget Boro overturned this deficit, twice, on their cup run in 2006."

Matt on text: "Arsenal's season ended on Tuesday, Liverpool's ends now.

    Freddie Burn: "Oh dear Carragher."

  120. 2024:
GOAL- Liverpool 0-1 Zenit St Petersburg (agg 0-3) - Hulk (19 mins)

Oh dear, oh dear. Jamie Carragher has enjoyed some superb European moments at Anfield, but this one won't rank among them. The defender, midway inside his own half, aims a pass back to Jose Reina but miscues it straight to Hulk, who races through and slides the ball under Jose Reina.

  121. 2023:
GOAL- Chelsea 0-1 Sparta Prague (agg 1-1) - David Lafata (17 mins)

Who saw this coming? Prague take a quick free kick, Vaclav Kadlec pulls the ball back after Gary Cahill's slip and David Lafata drives the ball into the roof of the net from 10 yards out to level the tie.

Will Taylor: "Everyone keeps saying Fernando Torres has lack of confidence in front of goal. To be honest i think it's more a lack of ability."

Tor Noppharat: "What did Torres do wrong in his past life? The two chances were well executed but it just won't go in."

  123. 2022:
Chelsea 0-0 Sparta Prague (agg 1-0)

It's one-way traffic at Stamford Bridge. Chelsea force a corner, which Fernando Torres meets six yards out, but the Spaniard heads over. Another difficult chance, but that's three already for the former Liverpool forward. He looks in the mood.

Marseille loanee Joey Barton on Twitter:

"Lyon are out but on the plus side one of the French sides are through, 'Le Toon'."

  125. 2019:
Chelsea 0-0 Sparta Prague (agg 1-0)
    Supporters of Sparta Prague

Chelsea might be strong favourites against Sparta Prague, but that hasn't stopped the Sparta fans turning out in force. Could their side spring a surprise?

  126. 2019:

There has been a goal already in Greece as Levante lead Olympiakos 1-0 on the night. Former Newcastle striker Obafemi Martins has scored and the Spanish side now lead 4-0 on aggregate.

Live scores for all of tonight's Europa League matches can be found on the BBC website.

  127. 2018:
Chelsea 0-0 Sparta Prague (agg 1-0)

Another chance for Fernando Torres and - you've heard this before - the Spaniard misses. Juan Mata sends the ball over from the right and Torres tries to hook the ball in on the stretch six yards out, but his effort loops over.

Dan, Coventry on text: "Am I the only one who thinks Zenit's squad is overall better than Liverpool's?"

Josh, Norwich on text: "More excited to see Hulk and Witsel than any of Liverpool's players, who are predominantly average."

Pete on text: "As a Gooner, I'm delighted that lot are through. They'll now take their eye off the ball in the Prem as we march on to our rightful place in next season's CL."

  129. 2015:
Liverpool 0-0 Zenit St Petersburg (agg 0-2)

Liverpool have a free-kick in an encouraging position, 35 yards out, but Steven Gerrard - who has been talking about the need for patience - goes for goal and blazes way over.

George Baggaley: "Considering Liverpool need goals, why is manager Brendan Rodgers playing with four central midfielders? Too negative."

Kevin Baas: "When will Rodgers realise that you can't play Lucas and Allen together?"

  131. 2014:

A reminder that Liverpool are playing for a last-16 meeting with FC Basel, who overcame Dnipro earlier. Chelsea, should they go through, will face the winners of Ajax against Steaua Bucharest.

  132. 2012:
Liverpool 0-0 Zenit St Petersburg (agg 0-2)

It sounds like a lively atmosphere at Anfield, which is exactly what manager Brendan Rodgers called for. A goal and the place will be rocking.

Tenacious Ryan: "Come on Liverpool! Hoping for another special moment like v Olympiakos."

  134. 2011:
CLOSE!- Chelsea 0-0 Sparta Prague (agg 1-0)

First sight of goal for Chelsea, and that's a decent effort from Fernando Torres. Victor Moses feeds the striker from the right and the Spaniard side-foots an effort just past the post from 10 yards.

  135. 2010:
    Liverpool 0-0 Zenit St Petersburg

Liverpool have started positively at Anfield, with Luis Suarez looking to run in behind the Zenit defence. He couldn't control a long ball but the Uruguayan has been involved several times already in the first few minutes.

  136. 2006:
    KICK-OFF- Chelsea 0-0 Sparta Prague

And we're under way at Stamford Bridge as well.

  137. 2005:
KICK-OFF- Liverpool 0-0 Zenit St Petersburg

Under way at Anfield, where Liverpool will be looking for a bright start to set the tone.

Kris, London on text: "Mouth-watering prospect of an in-form Bale taking on Inter."

Bob, Sunderland on text: "No repeat of Bale vs Maicon, unfortunately."

Neil Knighton: "Lyon deserve everything they get for playing 94 minutes of anti-football."

  140. 2004:
Liverpool v Zenit St Petersburg (2005 GMT)

Matt Monaghan reports: "Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers has called on the Kop to urge his players to victory against big-spending Zenit St Petersburg, and the fans will have to be in particularly good voice to help overturn a daunting two-goal deficit from the first leg. The Northern Irishman will need striker Luis Suarez to forget his uncharacteristically profligate performance from the game in Russia, as well as demand his defence is not as accommodating. Liverpool have famously overturned the odds on European nights at Anfield many times before, but can they repeat the trick again?

  141. 2003:
Chelsea v Sparta Prague (2005 GMT)

Tim Oscroft reports: "The visit of Sparta Prague will not see Frank Lampard notch up his 200th Chelsea goal, as Rafa Benitez is resting the veteran midfielder, who currently has 199 for the club, ahead of Sunday's Premier League clash with Man City. 'He won't be in the squad. We have to manage it a little bit,' said Benitez at the pre-match press conference. Demba Ba is ineligible, as he was for the 1-0 win in the first leg, while Branislaw Ivanovic is also being rested. Oscar gave Chelsea a vital away goal last week, but Sparta boss Vitezslav Lavicka has pledged that his side will give it a go at Stamford Bridge, saying: 'We are coming here 1-0 down, which makes it a difficult situation for us but we still have a clear intention to play our best and try to surprise.'"

  142. 2002:

We don't have too much time to savour those excellent results for both Tottenham and Newcastle, as we're straight into the evening's later games. The teams are in the tunnel at Anfield for Liverpool against Zenit and at Stamford Bridge for Chelsea's game against Sparta Prague.

Cemal Karova: "See, we are not just a one-man team!"

Alex Harris: "Arsenal fan glad to see Spurs through for actually attacking and not putting 10 behind the ball, actually cheered the goal."

Nasek: "I was just about to tweet 'what has Mousa Dembele actually done for Tottenham?'"

  144. 1957:

The full-time whistle is going across Europe and Lazio and FC Basle join Newcastle and Tottenham in the last 16 following wins over Borussia Moenchengladbach and Dnipro respectively.

Live scores for all of tonight's Europa League matches can be found on the BBC website.

Tom, Waford on text: "Spurs going through is a victory for football. So sick of these defensive, anti-football performances by teams in Europe. So happy for our fans! COYS!"

Bill, Hereford on text: "Lyon victims of their own game, wasted too much time and possession, poor game but Spurs deserve it if either team does."

Stuart, Eastbourne on text: "Come on Reds, we can do it. We're all behind you. Suarez and Gerrard to take us through."

  146. 1959:

What a climax that was. Spurs looked all but out of the competition but Mousa Dembele produced a moment of class to send Tottenham into the last 16, where they will face Inter Milan, who have won 3-0 against Cluj and 5-0 on aggregate. Spurs v Inter on 7 and 14 March - put those dates in your diary. What a couple of games those promise to be.

  147. 1956:

Stef, Norway on text: "The replacement for Modric is and always has been, Dembele. Get in there Spurs!"

Matt, Cambridge on text: "Tim Krul has been immense tonight, kept Newcastle in the game, bring on the next round!"

  150. 1954:
FULL-TIME - NEWCASTLE ARE THROUGH- Metalist Kharkiv 0-1 Newcastle (agg 0-1)
  151. 1953:
FULL-TIME - TOTTENHAM ARE THROUGH- Lyon 1-1 Tottenham (agg 2-3)
Injured Spurs midfielder Sandro on Twitter:

"Yessss... I knew that .... Yeesss ... COYS."

Inter Milan make sure of their place in the last 16 with a third goal on the night at Cluj. The Italians took advantage of their extra man after Camora was sent off and substitute Felice Piccolo made it 3-0 on the night and 5-0 overall.

Live scores for all of tonight's Europa League matches can be found on the BBC website.

James Brandon: "Mousa Dembele. Take a bow my friend!!!"

Matt Fallon: "I thought that was Gareth Bale's job?!?"

  155. 1952:

We're into the final one of three minutes' of injury time in Lyon, and the final one of five in Kharkiv.

  156. 1949:
GOAL- Lyon 1-1 Tottenham (agg 2-3) - Mousa Dembele (90 mins)

Well if you shoot like that, there's no problem with being restricted to long-range efforts! Mousa Dembele smashes in a powerful drive from the edge of the box which Gareth Bale would be proud of - it gave Remy Vercoutre no chance. Brilliant from Dembele and Spurs are going through.

  157. 1948:
    Lyon 1-0 Tottenham (agg 2-2)

Tottenham are being restricted to long-range efforts. Gareth Bale - who else? - lashes in a shot from outside the box which almost turns into a useful cross for Clint Dempsey, but the ball flashes across the face of goal and away to safety.

Rob Millward: "Maybe it's opposite week in football? Lionel Messi had a shocker... Gareth Bale's having a shocker! All looking GREAT for Fernando Torres tonight for Chelsea."

  159. 1945:
CLOSE!- Metalist Kharkiv 0-1 Newcastle (agg 0-1)

Metalist almost grab an equaliser, with Willian hitting the post with a flick from a corner. The Ukrainians need two goals to progress.

  160. 1943:
FINAL FIVE- Lyon 1-0 Tottenham (agg 2-2)

Tottenham are running out of time...

  161. 1938:

We spoke too soon about the match between Dnipro Dnipropetrovsk and FC Basel. Just moments after that last update Basel were also reduced to 10 men and Dnipro awarded a penalty. Fabian Frei was the man sent off after he handled in the area and Yevhen Seleznyov scored from the spot. It's all happening now at the Dnipro Arena as the Swiss side equalise, also from the penalty spot, Fabian Schar with the goal, meaning they now lead 3-1 on aggregate.

Live scores for all of tonight's Europa League matches can be found on the BBC website.

Marseille loanee Joey Barton on Twitter:

"Can Lyon hold on? Spurs pushing for equaliser to send them through here..."

  163. 1942:
Metalist Kharkiv 0-1 Newcastle (agg 0-1)

If Newcastle see this out - and they look pretty comfortable now - they'll be looking at a last-16 game against Anzhi Makhachkala or Hannover.

  164. 1940:
    Lyon 1-0 Tottenham (agg 2-2)

It's very much in the balance in Lyon. Tottenham know a goal will put them through to a likely last-16 encounter with Inter Milan.

PaulFrankland: "Take a bow Timmy Krul."

YorkshireBaldy1: "Remember Spurs fans saying we wouldn't miss Luka Modric, well on nights like this I do."

Tim Whatmough: "Krul's hardly had anything to do but he should be man of the match over the two legs if it stays like this."

John, Harrow on text: "Tottenham playing poorly at the moment but with Bale something can happen out of nothing, I can really feel a Bale 87th-minute equaliser occurring.."

John, Newcastle on text: "As I said a few hours ago. In Shola we trust.."

Peter on text: "How much will Bale rue slotting wide earlier?"

  167. 1937:

There are just over 10 minutes remaining in Lyon and Kharkiv. As it stands, Spurs are going out but Newcastle are on their way into the last 16.

  168. 1936:
Metalist Kharkiv 0-1 Newcastle (agg 0-1)

More good work from Tim Krul to deny Jonathan Cristaldo. The striker is clean through but the Dutch keeper foils him, then the ball goes wide, is returned into the box and Cristaldo is again denied by the Newcastle keeper.

Janniky: "Moussa Sissoko is so quick it's actually frightening. Have we ever seen such a quick tall midfielder?"

Austin Bobmanuel: "Spurs should be winning this. But their approach play is disjointed at best. Won't go far without a Luka Modric type player."

  170. 1935:
SUBSTITUTION- Metalist Kharkiv 0-1 Newcastle (agg 0-1)

Newcastle are also making changes, James Perch and Jonas Gutierrez on for Papiss Cisse and Vurnon Anita. Alan Pardew shutting up shop, perhaps?

  171. 1933:
SUBSTITUTION- Lyon 1-0 Tottenham (agg 2-2)

Spurs make the change, with Gylfi Sigurdsson on for Lewis Holtby.

  172. 1933:

There is just one tie without a goal so far and it's Dnipro Dnipropetrovsk versus FC Basel. The Swiss side lead 2-0 from the first leg and also have a man advantage after former Blackburn striker Nikola Kalinic's red card.

Live scores for all of tonight's Europa League matches can be found on the BBC website.

  173. 1932:
    Lyon 1-0 Tottenham (agg 2-2)

Looks like Spurs are considering another change, with Gylfi Sigurdsson warming up. Too early to say it's a last throw of the dice from AVB? How Tottenham wish they could call on the injured Jermain Defoe.

  174. 1930:
GREAT SAVE!- Metalist Kharkiv 0-1 Newcastle (agg 0-1)

Golden chance for Metalist Kharkiv to strike back as substitute Willian finds himself in yards of space in the box but, as he tries to lift the ball over the onrushing Tim Krul, the Dutch keeper gets a hand to his shot to keep it out. Great save.

Statisticians Opta: "3 - Three of Shola Ameobi's four goals this season for Newcastle have come in the Europa League. Specialist."

  176. 1929:
    Lyon 1-0 Tottenham (agg 2-2)

This game in Lyon has really burst into life. Spurs are very much in the ascendancy, but they haven't found a way through yet. They've got 20 minutes to find a goal to keep their Europa League hopes alive.

Jon, Eastleigh on text: "How was that not a yellow for Lacazette? And how was that not a penalty!? Two shocking decisions."

Alex, Edgware on text: "Some of the poorest passing I've seen in a long time from Spurs. Coupled with their poor first touch, this could be a long half an hour"

Jack, Oxford on text: "Gallas is a nightmare. Assou-Ekotto not much better. Ref still poor but got penalty decision right."

  178. 1927:
    Lyon 1-0 Tottenham (agg 2-2)

Gareth Bale's really coming into his own now. Minutes after beating away a free-kick, Lyon keeper Remy Vercoutre unconvincingly fists away another Bale strike from distance. The Welshman is clearly going to shoot whenever he's anywhere near the goal, and Vercoutre looks a worried man.

  179. 1927:

Stuttgart double their lead at Genk, Christian Gentner with the goal to give them a 2-0 lead on the night and 3-1 on aggregate.

Live scores for all of tonight's Europa League matches can be found on the BBC website.

Jon, Eastleigh on text: "This is Assou-Ekotto's game plan for today apparently: beat man, get space for a cross, dally in possession, lose the ball, get caught out of position in defence, repeat."

Joe, Oxford on text: "It seems Brendan Rodgers hasn't learnt his lesson from the West Brom game. Once again he's playing four central midfielders and once again we will struggle to break the opposition down."

Jake, Liverpool on text: "Can't see Liverpool going through tonight, have too much do. No Sturridge/Coutinho doesn't help either."

Former Liverpool striker Michael Owen on Twitter:

"If Liverpool play like they did on Sunday then they will go through tonight. Best I've seen them play in ages. Zenit are no mugs though."

Luke Hunter: "Keep calm and trust in Shola."

  183. 1925:
SUBSTITUTION- Lyon 1-0 Tottenham (agg 2-2)

Interesting switch from Andre Villas-Boas, with Clint Dempsey on to replace Aaron Lennon.

  184. 1925:
PENALTY APPEAL- Lyon 1-0 Tottenham (agg 2-2)

Tottenham survive strong appeals for a penalty there as Brad Friedel sticks out a boot and appears to bring down Alexandre Lacazette. The referee waves away the claims. It looked a penalty on first glimpse, but the replays show that Friedel whipped his foot away and there was little, if any, contact.

  185. 1921:
GOAL- Metalist Kharkiv 0-1 Newcastle (agg 0-1) - Shola Ameobi (64 mins)

No mistake from Shola Ameobi, who smashes the ball into the roof of the net. Newcastle in control now.

  186. 1920:
PENALTY- Metalist Kharkiv 0-0 Newcastle (agg 0-0)

Penalty to Newcastle as Moussa Sissoko is brought down by Metalist keeper Olexandr Goryainov. The ball ran loose in the area and Sissoko was quick to react. There was definitely contact there - looked a good decision to me.

  187. 1919:
    Lyon 1-0 Tottenham (agg 2-2)

I wonder how desperate Tottenham are to stay in this competition? They're in a strong position in the league to challenge for Champions League qualification, so how much do they want to be in the Europa League? We'll find out in the next 30 minutes.

  188. 1918:
Metalist Kharkiv 0-0 Newcastle (agg 0-0)

Newcastle debutant Massadio Haidana needs to be careful. The defender has already been booked and he's put in a couple of questionable tackles. The Magpies will need all 11 players if they are to come through what is proving a stern test.

  189. 1916:
CLOSE!- Lyon 1-0 Tottenham (agg 2-2)

Lyon are causing the Tottenham defence some problems. Brad Friedel's legs come to the rescue, though, as the big American blocks Clement Grenier's clumsy toe-poke of a volley from 12 yards.

  190. 1915:
CLOSE!- Metalist Kharkiv 0-0 Newcastle (agg 0-0)

First chance of the second half for Newcastle, Sylvain Marveaux finding space on the left and firing wildly over from close range. It was a tight angle, but in a game of few chances that was a decent one.

Nick Rood: "Bet Atletico Madrid are regretting bringing their keeper up for a corner at 0-1 in the home leg now after losing by one goal."

  192. 1913:
Chelsea v Sparta Prague (2005 GMT)

Rafa Benitez makes four changes to the starting XI that ground out a 1-0 win in Prague. John Terry will partner Gary Cahill in central defence, while last week's goalscorer Oscar starts this time out with John Mikel Obi and Victor Moses also getting the nod. Fernando Torres will be the lone striker. Prague make just one change, with midfielder Tomas Prikryl replacing Josef Husbauer.

Gerry, Glasgow on text: "This could be a bad night for English teams in the Europa League. Newcastle, Tottenham and Liverpool all in a tricky situation so far."

Phil, Poole on text: "Re Rory 19:03 - We would still be sitting here waiting for a goal sometime next week."

Nicholas, London on text: "Why do people continually mock the French league? It's at least close to the other top leagues."

  194. 1911:
CLOSE!- Lyon 1-0 Tottenham (agg 2-2)

What was that about Gareth Bale? How has he not scored? The winger is played in by a lovely Emmanuel Adebayor cross from the right, and he connects sweetly from 10 yards but sidefoots the ball inches wide. I thought that was in. It was a difficult skill to try to score on the volley, but the form Bale's in you expect him to bury chances like that one.

Emanuel Fabian: "Two goals down and Liverpool are forced into replacing Sturridge and Coutinho with Allen and Henderson, that's just depressing."

  196. 1908:
    Lyon 1-0 Tottenham (agg 2-2)

If Gareth Bale has designs on improving his already excellent goalscoring run, he has plenty of reason to hope Spurs get through tonight. With Inter 4-0 up on aggregate against Cluj, the Italians lie in wait for the winner of this match. And Bale has fond memories of playing at the San Siro, you might recall.

  197. 1904:

We're back under way in Kharkiv and Lyon.

  198. 1903:
    Liverpool v Zenit (2005 GMT)

Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers is forced into two changes for the visit of Zenit as Daniel Sturridge and Philippe Countinho - both goalscorers in the 5-0 weekend win against Swansea - are cup tied. Joe Allen and Jordan Henderson replace the pair, with Luis Suarez set to revert to the lone striker role.

For Zenit, manager Luciano Spalletti opts to make just one change to the team that won the first leg 2-0. Veteran Sergei Semak is drafted in to stiffen the midfield as striker Aleksandr Kerzhakov drops to the substitutes' bench.

Rory, Bolton on text: "That first half between Newcastle and Kharkiv was almost as bad as the first leg. They should have a one-time golden goal and see how long it takes!"

Tom on text: "We should bring on that new striker we got in January for the second half... Oh wait."

  200. 1900:
BREAKING TEAM NEWS- Chelsea v Sparta Prague (2005 GMT)

Chelsea make four changes from the side that won in Prague, with John Terry, Oscar, John Mikel Obi and Victor Moses coming in. Manager Rafael Benitez is true to his pre-match word, resting Frank Lampard and Branislav Ivanovic.

  201. 1858:
BREAKING TEAM NEWS- Liverpool v Zenit St Petersburg (2005 GMT)

Liverpool make two enforced changes from the side that beat Swansea 5-0 in the Premier League at the weekend, with Joe Allen and Jordan Henderson coming in for the cup-tied Philippe Coutinho and Daniel Sturridge.

Joe, London on text: "Oh dear, Joey Barton trying to embolden his move to Ligue 1 on Twitter. Lyon hardly teaching Spurs a lesson, just doing what the likes of Wigan and West Brom do. Score first, defend resolutely."

Injured Spurs midfielder Sandro on Twitter:

"Just one goal will change everything. We can do it. COYS..."

  204. 1857:

It's all over for the holders Atletico Madrid, who lose 2-1 on aggregate to Rubin Kazan. The damage was done a week ago in Spain when they were beaten 2-0 and despite Falcao scoring with five minutes to go they couldn't find a second goal. Bet Atletico are regretting sending their keeper up in the dying seconds of the first leg now (see 1719 GMT).

Live scores for all of tonight's Europa League matches can be found on the BBC website.

  205. 1854:
    Lyon 1-0 Tottenham (agg 2-2)

Aimee Lewis reports: "Lyon have managed to defuse the threat of Gareth Bale, although the Welshman did make a trademark dash down the right wing four minutes before the break in what was the only glimpse of the midfielder in full flow. Clement Grenier has been Lyon's creative force, with the playmaker's free-kick leading to Maxime Gonalons' goal."

  206. 1853:
Metalist Kharkiv 0-0 Newcastle (agg 0-0)

Jonathan Smith reports: "Metalist Kharkiv became more dangerous as the half wore on but Papiss Cisse wasted the best chance of the half hitting his shot straight at the keeper just before half-time. But after three halves of football without a goal, it would not be a surprise to see this heading for extra-time and possibly the Europa League's first ever shootout."

  207. 1852:

Stuttgart take the lead at Genk on the stroke of half-time through Arthur Boca. They now lead 2-1 on aggregate. Inter Milan have also doubled their lead over Cluj in injury time at the end of the first half. Fredy Guarin now has two for the night and they lead 4-0 on aggregate.

Live scores for all of tonight's Europa League matches can be found on the BBC website.

  208. 1851:
    Lyon 1-0 Tottenham (agg 2-2)
    Lyon celebrate scoring against Spurs

It's been a game of few chances in Lyon, where Maxime Gonalons' goal is the difference between the sides.

Kanayo Umeogu: "Gareth Bale is definitely faster than Usain Bolt. Did you see that sprint?"

  210. 1849:
    HALF-TIME- Metalist Kharkiv 0-0 Newcastle (agg 0-0)
  211. 1849:
    HALF-TIME- Lyon 1-0 Tottenham (agg 2-2)
  212. 1847:
HITS THE WOODWORK- Lyon 1-0 Tottenham (agg 2-2)

That's the closest Tottenham have come to making a breakthrough. Lewis Holtby has been quiet so far but he finds space 25 yards out and shoots low left-footed. The ball is heading in, but Lyon keeper Remy Vercoutre dives to his left to tip it on to the post. Good save.

  213. 1847:

It's almost half-time in both games, with Spurs probing...

Mark, Nottingham on text:. "Spurs have no cutting edge whatsoever. Should've signed a Jan window striker AVB!"

Nick, France on text: "Re 18:32 Not sure Pardew has many options on the bench tonight!"

  215. 1845:

Atletico Madrid give themselves hope with a goal from Falcao with just five minutes to go. The holders now trail 2-1 and need another goal to take the tie into extra time.

Live scores for all of tonight's Europa League matches can be found on the BBC website.

  216. 1844:
CLOSE!- Metalist Kharkiv 0-0 Newcastle (agg 0-0)

More promising attacking play by Newcastle. Shola Ameobi pokes the ball to Papiss Cisse on the edge of the Metalist area, and the Senegal striker wriggles free from his marker but his shot is straight at keeper Olexandr Goryainov.

  217. 1842:
    Lyon 1-0 Tottenham (agg 2-2)

The Spurs fans are in good voice in Lyon in an effort to inspire their team, but they haven't had too much to cheer just yet.

Sanj06: "What does Emmanuel Adebayor offer Spurs? The guy is useless, hasn't done anything worthwhile in a long, long time."

Miles Thompson: "Clement Grenier looks like a good player for Lyon, I'd be surprised if Newcastle don't sign him up for their French Revolution."

  219. 1840:
Metalist Kharkiv 0-0 Newcastle (agg 0-0)

Newcastle have been warned. Having allowed Jonathan Cristaldo a headed chance minutes earlier, they leave the forward completely unmarked at a corner and Cristaldo really shuld do better, but his effort is blocked by Mapou Yanga-Mbiwa.

  220. 1838:

Lazio have doubled their lead against Borussia Moenchengladbach through Alvaro Gonzalez. They now lead 5-3 on aggregate with the winners facing Stuttgart or Genk, who are level 1-1 on aggregate and 0-0 on the night.

Live scores for all of tonight's Europa League matches can be found on the BBC website.

On loan Marseille midfielder Joey Barton on Twitter:

"For anyone who is in any doubt to the strength of Ligue 1 (French League). Should get Lyon v Tottenham on now."

  222. 1837:

Atletico Madrid face a big 15 minutes if they are to stay in the Europa League. The holders still trail 2-0 on aggregate to Rubin Kazan but have had 14 attempts on goal.

Live scores for all of tonight's Europa League matches can be found on the BBC website.

Ashen233: "Poor refereeing performance so far from the guy in Lyon."

Flemming Jensen: "Not saying Kyle Walker's yellow for Spurs was unfair, but if that is all it takes to bring Lyon's Samuel Umtiti to the ground, he should see a doctor."

EJ_Franklin: "Ref in Lyon v Spurs game being affected by crowd. Lots of fouls going to home team, few the other way."

Nick, London on text: "Adebayor reverting to type. Impress on loan, get the huge new improved salary, perform poorly, look disinterested, move somewhere, impress on loan.. and repeat."

Sam on text: "As a West Ham fan, I fancy our chances against Spurs on Monday on evidence so far."

Jack, Oxford on text: "Can't decide whether I would prefer Spurs going out tonight so we can focus on the league. Regardless, the referee has looked quite poor thus far."

  225. 1834:
GARETH BALE WATCH- Lyon 1-0 Tottenham (agg 2-2)

Unbelievable scenes in Lyon - Gareth Bale, who has seven goals in his last five matches, hasn't scored and we're 30 minutes in. Disappointing from the Welshman. He does manage a run at the Lyon defence, but he overhits the ball and the chance goes. Plenty more time for Bale to make his mark yet, though.

  226. 1832:
Metalist Kharkiv 0-0 Newcastle (agg 0-0)
    Newcastle boss Alan Pardew

Newcastle manager Alan Pardew won't be too concerned by what he has seen from the Ukrainians so far. With slightly more than a half hour played, Metalist have only had the one real chance.

  227. 1830:
CLOSE!- Metalist Kharkiv 0-0 Newcastle (agg 0-0)

Newcastle survive, but only just. Jonathan Cristaldo meets a right-wing cross and towers above the Newcastle defence, heading down but inches wide of Tim Krul's right-hand post from 10 yards.

Sam, Watford on text: "Ref 18:24 Holtby is wearing 14 because European rules state that a number can only be worn by a single player during a campaign. 23 had already been worn by Carlo Cudicini."

Good knowledge there Sam. Told you that Uefa rule book's a good read.

Colin Dunn: "Gareth Bale at fault for goal and now moaning at team-mates for not passing to him."

Craig Fenby: "Sylvain Marveaux makes the difference to Newcastle's team, comfortable on the ball, quick, great passer, should start every game."

  230. 1826:

Inter Milan take the lead at Cluj, Fredy Guarin with the first goal in Romania. Inter now lead 3-0 on aggregate and look like they will be the ones facing the winner of the tie between Tottenham and Lyon. And Atletico Madrid still haven't found a way through against Rubin Kazan, meaning the holders are just over 20 minutes from going out.

Live scores for all of tonight's Europa League matches can be found on the BBC website.

  231. 1826:
YELLOW CARD- Lyon 1-0 Tottenham (agg 2-2)

Not the best start to this match from Kyle Walker. After conceding the free-kick which led to the goal, the right-back pulls down Samuel Umtiti and is deservedly booked.

  232. 1824:
Metalist Kharkiv 0-0 Newcastle (agg 0-0)

Maverick approach by Danny Simpson out in the Ukraine. Bearing in mind it's around -5 out there, the Newcastle full-back has opted for a short-sleeve shirt. With tights.

Joseph Reade: "Gareth Bale might be good at football but can he eat a toasted cheese sandwich quicker than me? Priorities Gareth."

Chris Currie: "Lyon's set pieces are on point tonight. Class delivery."

Alex, Manchester on text: "Can anyone tell me why Holtby is wearing 14 instead of his usual 23?"

  235. 1818:
GOAL- Lyon 1-0 Tottenham (agg 2-2) - Maxime Gonalons (17 mins)

This just got interesting. Tottenham punished their opponents twice from free-kicks in the first leg, but this time it's the French side who capitalise from a set play. Kyle Walker is penalised for a foul on the right, and Maxime Gonalons meets the ball at the near post to nod/shoulder it beyond Brad Friedel.

  236. 1818:
CLOSE!- Metalist Kharkiv 0-0 Newcastle (agg 0-0)

Newcastle have their first sight of goal as Moussa Sissoko latches onto a long ball before cutting inside and hitting a low shot that is comfortably collected by Metalist's first-leg hero Olexandr Goryainov. But it's encouraging for the Magpies.

  237. 1816:
Metalist Kharkiv 0-0 Newcastle (agg 0-0)

While it's true that Newcastle don't necessarily need to win tonight, Metalist's home form suggests they are in for a difficult evening. The Ukrainians have lost only once in 11 European home games - winning seven and drawing three at the Metalist Stadium.

Joe Blackett: "Metalist Kharkiv sounds more like a rock band than a football club."

  239. 1813:

We finally have a goal and it's come in Rome as Lazio lead Borussia Moenchengladbach 1-0, thanks to a goal from Antonio Candreva. The Italians now lead 4-3 on aggregate.

Live scores for all of tonight's Europa League matches can be found on the BBC website.

  240. 1813:
Metalist Kharkiv 0-0 Newcastle (agg 0-0)

Hmm, with that kind of finishing I can see why the first leg finished goalless. Cleiton Xavier takes a free-kick from at least 30 yards - probably more - and blazes it some way over. It could be a long night in Kharkiv if they carry on like that.

Steve, Wales on text: "Opta are being a touch pessimistic. Newcastle don't need to win in Ukraine to progress. A score draw and they're through."

Sulaiman, London on text: "If anyone can overturn a two-goal deficit it's Liverpool. The crowd will be the 12th man."

Statisticians Opta: "2 - Spurs have been eliminated on only two of the 33 occasions when they have won the first leg of a knockout game in Europe. Confident."

  243. 1810:
    Lyon 0-0 Tottenham (agg 1-2)

Tottenham have their first foray into the Lyon penalty area via, you guessed it, a Gareth Bale free-kick. This one's a cross from wide on the right, though, and William Gallas heads tamely over.

  244. 1808:
Metalist Kharkiv 0-0 Newcastle (agg 0-0)

Interesting tactics from Newcastle manager Alan Pardew. Papiss Cisse has started out wide for the Magpies with Shola Ameobi through the middle and the striker has made an encouraging start, winning a couple of high balls and troubling the Metalist defence with his physical presence.

Matt Cartwright: "I did my bit by getting home on time for kick-off so now it's time for Spurs to do theirs."

Simon Walker: "In my rush to get home for Spurs game I managed to get wrong train.... Now I will miss all the first half!!!"

Don't worry, Simon, you haven't missed too much yet.

  246. 1805:
    Lyon 0-0 Tottenham (agg 1-2)

Lyon are on the front foot in the early stages against Tottenham, Tottenham dealing comfortably enough with a free-kick in a promising position.

Statisticians Opta: "0 - Newcastle have never won in Ukraine. Their previous two games there (both against Dynamo Kiev) ended in a draw and a defeat. Curtains."

  248. 1802:

We're under way in Lyon and Kharkiv. Tottenham, remember, are 2-1 up, meaning if they avoid defeat they will be in the last 16. Newcastle drew the first leg 0-0 against Metalist, so they need goals. Or at least one goal.

  249. 1759:

A few of you are asking on Twitter why Lewis Holtby is eligible to play for Tottenham in the Europa League but Daniel Sturridge cannot feature for Liverpool.

With my trusty Uefa rulebook in hand (it's a real page turner, I assure you), I can tell you that Holtby can play as his former side Schalke are still in the Champions League. Sturridge cannot play for Liverpool as Chelsea, like the Reds, are now in the Europa League after they were knocked out of the Champions League. Hopefully that has cleared that one up.

Ryan, Southampton on text: "I really wouldn't be surprised if Chelsea are the only British team left standing at the end of the night."

  251. 1757:

The teams are on their way out in Lyon and Kharkiv. Just a couple of minutes until kick-off.

  252. 1755:

Be it Bale or Bednar, let's hope we're talking about the football once the matches are over. The build-up to Tottenham's match in Lyon was marred by the news that Spurs fans were attacked in a bar by a group of men wearing balaclavas, with three supporters needing hospital treatment.

  253. 1752:
    Gareth Bale

What are the odds we'll end the night talking about Gareth Bale? The Welsh winger has been in ridiculous form of late, scoring all of his side's last six goals. His two free-kicks in the first leg bamboozled Lyon keeper Remy Vercoutre and swung the game Spurs' way. It's probably a fair bet Lyon boss Remi Garde, himself a tough-tackling midfielder in his Arsenal days, will tell his players to steer clear of any hefty challenges around the edge of the 18-yard box.

  254. 1751:

It's half-time in Moscow and it remains goalless between Rubin Kazan and Atletico Madrid. It's going to be a big 45 minutes for the holders who need to score two goals just to take the game into extra time, as they currently trail 2-0.

Live scores for all of tonight's Europa League matches can be found on the BBC website.

  255. 1749:

There are plenty of highly rated players on show this evening from the sides facing the British teams: Hulk, Yoann Gourcuff and Axel Witsel to name just three. But if last night was anything to go, when ex-Portsmouth pair Sulley Muntari and Kevin-Prince Boateng scored in AC Milan's 2-0 win over Barcelona, I wonder if some familiar, lower-profile names might take the glory once again. Roman Bednar or Jiri Jarosik for Sparta, perhaps? Steed Malbranque for Lyon? Or will the French club's manager, former Arsenal Double winner Remi Garde, be celebrating at the expense of his old club's great rivals?

    Remi Garde

Kelvin: "Liverpool have a slim chance as Zenit have quality in their team... Such as Axel Witsel & Hulk."

Will Varney: "1-0 Liverpool I think today! Not enough to get them through but Luis Suarez will score early on to put Zenit under pressure."

Matthew Murphy: "Liverpool at Anfield are made for these kind of nights. There isn't a better team to do it!"

John, Newcastle on text: "In Shola we trust. A proven European performer who silenced the Nou Camp a decade ago, the possibilities seemed endless..."

  258. 1745:

Given how close all the matches are, this seems like a good time to clarify what's what with the away goals rule. The gist is this: if the tie is level after 90 minutes, the side which has scored more away goals wins. If they still can't be separated, there will be extra time, and if level after the extra 30 minutes then again the side with most away goals wins. If it's still all square, we'll be looking at a first penalty shootout in the competition's history. Got it?

  259. 1742:

Just over 40 minutes gone and it's still goalless between Rubin Kazan and the holders Atletico Madrid. As you would expect the visitors have created more of the chances as they seek to overcome a 2-0 deficit. The conditions will certainly suit the home side more with temperatures standing at -eight already.

Take a look at our videprinter for all of the goals as they happen.

  260. 1742:
Metalist Kharkiv v Newcastle (1800 GMT)

Newcastle rest defenders Davide Santon and Steven Taylor, who is on the bench, so Danny Simpson is recalled and 20-year-old Massadio Haidara makes his first start for the Magpies. Vurnon Anita replaces Cheick Tiote, who is ill, while Sylvain Marveaux and Shola Ameobi come in from the first leg stalemate at St James' Park.

  261. 1741:
    Lyon v Tottenham (1800 GMT)

Brad Friedel starts ahead of Hugo Lloris in the Tottenham goal as manager Andre Villas-Boas continues with his preference of using the American in Europa League games. Midfielder Lewis Holtby begins his first European game for Spurs while Emmanuel Adebayor - who has just three goals to his name this season - starts up front.

Lyon make one change to the team which lost 2-1 in the first leg at White Hart Lane. Former Spurs midfielder Steed Malbranque is demoted to the substitutes' bench and is replaced by Clement Grenier.

LadDirectionerr: "Liverpool to go through after extra time. Chelsea & Spurs to cruise through in normal time. Sadly Newcastle to get knocked out."

  263. 1739:
    LINE-UPS- Metalist Kharkiv v Newcastle (1800 GMT)

Tottenham: Friedel, Walker, Gallas, Vertonghen, Assou-Ekotto, Dembele, Parker, Lennon, Holtby, Bale, Adebayor. Subs: Lloris, Dempsey, Naughton, Dawson, Sigurdsson, Livermore, Caulker.

    Referee: Wolfgang Stark (Germany)

Former Liverpool, Man City & Newcastle midfielder Dietmar Hamann on Twitter:

"Off to Anfield, hopefully with a positive outcome. If Liverpool keep a clean sheet I think there is a good chance we might see extra time at least against Zenit."

Chris, Newcastle on text: "Ref 17:00 That's us getting knocked out on penalties then!"

  267. 1735:

Unlike the domestic competitions, there isn't a whole lot of suspense when it comes to who the victorious teams will face in the next round. That does, at least, save us the tedium of another long-winded Uefa draw. It also means we can already consider the prospect of some mouth-watering ties in the last 16. If Chelsea win they will play Ajax or Steaua Bucharest, Tottenham would face Inter or Cluj, Newcastle would play either Anzhi Makhachkala or Hannover and Liverpool would be up against Basel or Dnipro. Spurs v Inter and Chelsea v Ajax, anyone?

  268. 1733:
Metalist Kharkiv v Newcastle (1800 GMT)

Jonathan Smith reports: "Newcastle failed to find the net in a goalless first leg but their performance will give them hope that they can score an away goal in Ukraine. Papiss Cisse will hope for a change in fortune after having two goals ruled out by an assistant's flag at St James' Park but Alan Pardew's side drew a blank in two of their Europa League group games on their travels."

  269. 1730:
    Lyon v Tottenham (1800 GMT)

Aimee Lewis reports: "Andre Villas-Boas says he has been trying to "unlock the best" of out-of-sorts striker Emmanuel Adebayor. But while the Tottenham boss rummages around to find the key to getting the Togo international scoring again, AVB can always rely on Gareth Bale. "Two masterstrokes," was how French newspaper L'Equipe described the Welshman's free-kicks in the first leg, which gave Spurs a 2-1 lead in this tie. Lyon goalkeeper Remy Vercoutre has described the 23-year-old as "frightening" and his fear is understandable. Bale has scored seven goals in his last five games. Lyon have been warned."

  270. 1728:
WEATHER WATCH- Metalist Kharkiv v Newcastle (1800 GMT)

I hope the Newcastle players have got their gloves, tights and snoods with them. It's -3 in Kharkiv and only going one way - it's going to be -5 by kick-off time.

  271. 1727:

Can Liverpool overturn a two-goal deficit at Anfield? Can Rafael Benitez lead Chelsea to a European trophy? Will Newcastle get the luck they were lacking in the first leg? And will anyone but Gareth Bale ever score for Tottenham again? Let us know your thoughts via text on 81111 (UK only) or you can join the discussion on Twitter using #bbcfootball

  272. 1723:

There were mixed fortunes for the Premier League quartet a week ago. Gareth Bale's free-kick double earned Spurs a last-minute 2-1 win against Lyon, Liverpool created chances but were beaten 2-0 in Russia by Zenit St Petersburg, Chelsea made their debut in the competition with a narrow 1-0 win at Sparta Prague and Newcastle were held to a 0-0 draw by Metalist Kharkiv. All games very much alive then.

Baritone Rogers: "Gareth Bale to score two free-kicks and a corner tonight. And then turn water into wine. And give sight to the blind."

Jad Hamizan: "Massadio Haidara is a cracking name. Not really on the same level as Behrang Safari or Tranquillo Barnetta, but still..."

  274. 1719:

My favourite story of the Europa League season so far features Atletico, who are so desperate to retain their title that they went a little gung-ho in the first leg. One goal down with only seconds remaining of their home game against Rubin Kazan, the Spanish side won a corner and promptly sent keeper Sergio Asenjo upfield in an attempt to rescue a draw. Only, the plan didn't quite come off. Instead, the visitors cleared the corner, raced down the other end and Pablo Orbaiz slotted into the unguarded net. Laudable attacking intent from Atletico, but it means the 2010 and 2012 winners are facing an early exit.

Phil Durrant: "Spurs have a massive chance to win this cup. Also, if Spain can win the Euros with no striker then Chelsea can without Torres!"

  276. 1715:

One game is already under way, and it promises to be one with a significant bearing on this competition. Holders Atletico Madrid are in action in Russia against Rubin Kazan. Trailing 2-0 from the first leg, they are drawing 0-0 with just over 10 minutes gone in the second leg.

  277. 1712:
BREAKING TEAM NEWS- Metalist Kharkiv v Newcastle (1800 GMT)

Newcastle make five changes from the side held by Metalist Kharkiv in the first leg, with left-back Massadio Haidara making his full debut. Midfielder Cheick Tiote misses out, reportedly through illness.

  278. 1709:
BREAKING TEAM NEWS- Lyon v Tottenham (1800 GMT)

Tottenham manager Andre Villas-Boas makes one change from the side which beat Lyon in the first leg, with Lewis Holtby coming in for Clint Dempsey.

  279. 1707:

Here are the games we'll be focusing on, while of course we'll keep you updated with what's going on around the continent:

Metalist Kharkiv v Newcastle (1800 GMT)

    Lyon v Tottenham (1800 GMT)

Chelsea v Sparta Prague (2005 GMT)

Liverpool v Zenit St Petersburg (2005 GMT)

  280. 1703:

So what have we got in store this evening? Four British teams are in Europa League last-32 second-leg action. All of them - Tottenham, Newcastle, Chelsea and Liverpool - have at one stage or other been battling it out in the Champions League over the last decade, but this year they are competing to lift Europe's second club competition.

  281. 1701:
Gareth Bale scores in the first leg against Lyon

Of course, penalties aren't the only way to win a game in dramatic fashion. They're not even the only set-piece way to do so. Just ask Gareth Bale.

  282. 1700:

Good news for those of a nervous disposition. According to Uefa, no Europa League game has gone to penalties in the competition's four-season existence. If my maths is right - and bear in mind this includes qualifiers - that's more than 550 spot-kick-free ties. 550! Sounds like we're in for a nice straightforward evening then.
