  1. 2200:

So it is Napoli's turn to flex their muscles on Sunday in Serie A but there are plenty of enticing fixtures to get your teeth into across Europe. Napoli's former striker, Edinson Cavani, should be in action as Paris St-Germain head to Nantes while Barcelona take on Malaga. We'll have live text commentary on the games from 1800 BST. Until then, goodnight.

  2. 2151:
    Eredivisie Dutch leagueFULL-TIME

PEK Zwolle are hardly one of Europe's heavyweights yet they now sit at the top of the table ahead of Ajax and PSV Eindhoven after a 2-0 defeat of Cambuur - their fourth win in four games this season.

They are two points ahead of PSV who could only draw 1-1 with Heracles, while Roda came away from Den Haag with a 4-0 win. NEC climbed off the bottom of the table with a 2-2 draw against Waalwijk.

  3. 2149:
    Serie A in Italy

So contrasting fortunes for two of the potential title challengers on the opening day of the Italian Serie A season. Carlos Tevez scores the winner as Juventus start their bid for a third successive league title with a win, but there was a big upset in Verona as AC Milan lost 2-1 to Hellas Verona, veteran striker Luca Toni scoring both goals.

It was a routine win for Juventus and while one potential challenger for the Scudetto faltered today, another is in action on Sunday as Rafael Benitez's Napoli host Bologna in one of eight Serie A fixtures.

Tunde Akere: Carlos Tevez's winning goal makes me remember so many one nil's he won for United back in Manchester.

    Serie A in ItalyFULL-TIME- Sampdoria 0-1 Juventus
    Carlos Tevez

All over in Genoa and it is the perfect start for reigning champions Juventus and Carlos Tevez as the striker scores the winner on his league debut.

  7. 2137:
    French Ligue 1

Lyon blow a great chance to go top of the table as they slip to a shock 1-0 home defeat by Reims. They went into the match knowing that victory would send them back above Marseille, who defeated Valenciennes earlier in the day.

But Odair Fortes' 75th-minute winner sentenced Lyon to their first defeat of the season. Elsewhere, Siaka Tiene struck deep into stoppage time to earn Montpellier, who had trailed, a 2-1 win over Sochaux, while there were also wins for Bordeaux, Rennes and Guingamp.

  8. 2136:
Serie A in ItalyRED CARD - Paolo Castellini- Sampdoria 0-1 Juventus

Paolo Castellini had only been on the pitch a matter of minutes but is shown a straight red card for a two-footed sliding challenge on Stephan Lichtsteiner. Bad to worse for Sampdoria.

  9. 2135:
Serie A in ItalySUBSTITUTION- Sampdoria 0-1 Juventus

There will no second goal for Carlos Tevez as he comes off in the final few minutes. He is replaced by another new Juventus signing, Fernando Llorente. Mirko Vucinic also comes off with Sebastian Giovinco taking his place on the pitch.

  10. 2133:
    Spanish La Liga
    Lionel Messi

Barcelona are in action on Sunday when they take on Malaga, but they will be without Lionel Messi after coach Gerardo Martino confirmed earlier on Saturday that the forward misses out after bruising his thigh in the 1-1 draw with Atletico Madrid in midweek.

"I'm not worried about Messi because he looks very good to me," Martino said in a news conference. "He's prepared himself well during the holidays and has come back in great shape. The injury the other day was down to chance."

  11. 2129:
Serie A in ItalySUBSTITUTION- Sampdoria 0-1 Juventus

Final change for Sampdoria as Gaetano Berardi makes way for Paolo Castellini. Around seven minutes left for the home side to find an equaliser.

  12. 2128:
Eredivisie Dutch leagueLatest score- PEC Zwolle 2-0 Cambuur

Forget Ajax. Forget PSV Eindhoven. It is PEC Zwolle who are heading to the top of the table in the Netherlands. Two late goals by Guyon Fernandez and Rochdi Achenteh have given them a 2-0 lead over Cambuur.

As it stands, they will go two points clear of PSV at the summit.

  13. 2126:
Serie A in ItalySampdoria 0-1 Juventus

Some lovely football from Juventus as they string together several passes on the edge of the Sampdoria area, trying to fashion an opening. Arturo Vidal attempts to slip in Stephan Lichsteiner inside the area, but his marker is wise to move and nips in quickly to clear.

  14. 2119:
Serie A in ItalySUBSTITUTION- Sampdoria 0-1 Juventus

Sampdoria opt to make a couple of changes with time ticking away and on come Roberto Soriano and Shkodran Mustafi for Mirko Eramo and Daniele Gastaldello respectively. Into the last 15 minutes.

  15. 2118:
La Liga Spanish leagueGOAL- Espanyol 2-1 Valencia

Espanyol come from behind to take the lead against Valencia thanks to a 47th-minute goal by Cristhian Stuani.

  16. 2115:
Serie A in ItalyCLOSE!- Sampdoria 0-1 Juventus

Almost a second for Juventus as Paul Pogba clips the ball into the area for the onrushing Stephan Lichtsteiner. The defender just gets the better of his Swiss compatriot Gaetano Berardi and directs a header towards the far post but it bounces wide of the upright.

  17. 2113:
French Ligue 1GOAL- Lyon 0-1 Reims

Huge blow for Lyon as they fall behind to Odair Fortes' 76th-minute goal. They started the game looking for a win that would take them top of the table but now they're fighting to keep their unbeaten start to the season alive.

  18. 2108:
Serie A in ItalyDISALLOWED GOAL- Sampdoria 0-1 Juventus

Sampdoria think they are level when Andrea Costa stabs home from a free-kick that is lofted into the area. However, the linesman's flag is immediately up after spotting that the defender had strayed marginally offside.

Tunde Akere: Carlos Tevez is a beast, workaholic, and he always put 100 percent into matches. He will be a success at Juventus.

  20. 2102:
Serie A in ItalyGOAL- Sampdoria 0-1 Juventus - Carlos Tevez
    Carlos Tevez

What a start to his Juventus career for Carlos Tevez! The former Manchester City striker is immediately off the mark with a goal on his league debut for Juventus. Excellent work by Arturo Vidal to create the opportunity. He spotted the run of Paul Pogba into the area, flicked the ball through for the France international, who then squared a pass for Tevez to smash into the back of the net.

  21. 2100:
Serie A in ItalySampdoria 0-0 Juventus

Another Andrea Prilo delivery finds Paul Pogba alone at the far post, he nods the ball back into the danger area but can't find a Juventus player and Sampdoria clear.

  22. 2058:
La Liga Spanish leagueHALF-TIME- Espanyol 1-1 Valencia

It is 1-1 between Espanyol and Valencia, David Lopez equalising after Helder Postiga had given Valencia the lead. Earlier, Real Sociedad earned a point from a 1-1 draw at Elche.

  23. 2056:
Serie A in ItalyYELLOW CARD- Sampdoria 0-0 Juventus

Sampdoria's Mirko Eramo is the first player into the referee's book as he clips the feet of Carlos Tevez. Andrea Pirlo takes the resulting free-kick but the ball is always rising and flies way over the bar and into the stands, prompting ironic cheers from the home fans.

  24. 2052:
Serie A in ItalySampdoria 0-0 Juventus

There is a familiar face for Carlos Tevez in the stands in Genoa, with a sun-tanned Roberto Mancini in attendance. The former Manchester City manager is sporting the 'jumper over the shoulders' look, despite the rain lashing down.

  25. 2050:
Serie A in ItalySampdoria 0-0 Juventus

Sampdoria get the second half under way against Juventus and off we go again.

  26. 2046:
Serie A in ItalySampdoria 0-0 Juventus

Carlos Tevez has looked particularly impressive for Juventus so far, especially considering he is playing in a new league and for a new team. The striker has shown plenty of running and got in some good positions, although he evidently still needs to build up more of an understanding with Mirko Vucinic.

Juventus's top goalscorer in each of the last three seasons has not netted more than a dozen goals - frightening to think, therefore, what they could be like with a regular scorer.

  27. 2040:
Eredivisie Dutch leagueFULL-TIME- Heracles 1-1 PSV Eindhoven

Drama as former Manchester United player Park Ji-sung, on loan from QPR, equalises for leaders PSV Eindhoven four minutes from the end of normal time.

The 32-year-old South Korean's goal continues his side's unbeaten start but they so nearly came unstuck after trailing to Lerin Duarte's fifth-minute goal for most of the game.

However, PSV's failure to win means PEC Zwolle, who are second in the table, can go top if they beat Cambuur. The score in that game is 0-0 at the interval.

OptaPaolo: Juventus attempted 7 total shots in the first half vs Sampdoria, while the Blucerchiati had just one (blocked). Downpour.

  29. 2032:
    Serie A in ItalyHALF-TIME- Sampdoria 0-0 Juventus

Well it was not one of the most memorable halves of football but an intriguing contest nonetheless. Juventus perhaps had the better of the chances, with Carlos Tevez firing straight at Angelo Da Costa from a good position. Having lost twice to Sampdoria last season, Juventus will probably be happy with how things are shaping up so far.

Serie A in ItalySampdoria 0-0 Juventus

Smart work by the referee as he jumps over the ball to allow a Mirko Vucinic cross to run through to Kwadwo Asamoah, who is lurking just outside the box. He rifles a curling, first-time shot just over the bar.

  32. 2022:
Eredivisie Dutch leagueHeracles 1-0 PSV Eindhoven

Leaders PSV Eindhoven have 12 minutes to find an equaliser or see their unbeaten start to the season end at the hands of lowly Heracles. Lerin Duarte's fifth-minute goal divides the two sides.

  33. 2020:
Serie A in ItalySampdoria 0-0 Juventus

The pace of the game has slowed down somewhat following a lively start. Carlos Tevez has looked lively when on the ball, on one occasion spraying a pass to Mirko Vucinic before racing into the area in anticipation of a return ball. It never came though, as Vucinic instead opts to shoot, but the ball strikes a Sampdoria defender.

  34. 2016:
French Ligue 1HALF-TIME- Lyon 0-0 Reims
    Lyon v Reims

Reims forward Odair Fortes fights for the ball with Lyon defender Henri Bedimo [r]. It is goalless at the Stade de Gerland at the interval, with Lyon so far frustrated in their attempts to go top of the table.

  35. 2009:
Serie A in ItalySampdoria 0-0 Juventus

First chance for Carlos Tevez as a flowing, attacking move ends with the ball deflecting off a defender's foot and into the path of the former Manchester City striker, unmarked inside the area. He fires goalwards but his shot is straight at Angelo Da Costa.

  36. 2004:
Serie A in ItalySampdoria 0-0 Juventus

Action at both ends in recent minutes as Sampdoria midfielder Nenad Krsticic drives the ball across the face of goal but no Sampdoria player can get a foot to it and the danger is cleared, before Kwadwo Asamoah launches himself at a Juventus corner only for home keeper Angelo Da Costa to react quickly and get a hand to the ball.

  37. 2002:
Eredivisie Dutch leagueFULL-TIME- NEC 2-2 RKC Waalwijk
    Frmer Motherwell striker Michael Higdon

NEC are off the mark after a 2-2 draw with RKC Waalwijk earns them their first point of the season. But it could have been so much better after the Nijmegen-based club squander a 2-0 lead.

Two penalties in the space of 14 first-half minutes by former Crewe and Motherwell striker Michael Higdon gave the hosts the perfect start before another penalty by Sander Duits reduced the deficit. Aurelien Joachim struck in the 69th minute to earn Waalwijk a point.

However, the result is enough to lift NEC off the bottom of the table with Feyenoord, who entertain NAC Breda on Sunday, now propping up the table.

  38. 1957:
Serie A in ItalySampdoria 0-0 Juventus

Dramatic claps of thunder above Stadio Luigi Ferraris as the rain continues to fall. Juventus are enjoying plenty of possession but Sampdoria look threatening when they have the ball. Manolo Gabbiadini has his shirt pulled right on the edge of the area as he attempts to wriggle his way into the box, but Eder sends the resulting free kick straight into the body of a Juventus defender, who then clears.

  39. 1952:

    Bordeaux 1-0 Bastia

  40. 1951:
Serie A in ItalyCLOSE!- Sampdoria 0-0 Juventus

Andrea Pirlo issues a signal of Juventus's intentions with an early effort that has Sampdoria keeper Angelo Da Costa diving at full stretch. The midfielder hits a dipping effort from outside the area that Da Costa manages to push over his own crossbar.

  41. 1947:

Hertha Berlin move up to fifth in the table after a 73rd-minute goal by Adrian Ramos earns his side a 1-0 win over Hamburg, who are without a win three games into the season.

Rian Hoskins: With their impressive recruitment and a manager with a proven success record, Napoli should be Juventus' closest challengers.

  44. 1941:
    French Ligue 1Latest scores

After Marseille went top of the table with a hard-fought 1-0 win at Valenciennes earlier, Lyon can replace them at the summit if they win at home to Reims. With the half hour mark approaching, it is goalless - as it is between Bordeaux and Bastia and Montpellier versus Sochaux.

However, two goals by Nelson Oliveira have given Rennes a commanding 2-0 lead at Evian, while Guingamp lead Lorient 1-0 thanks to Mustapha Yatabare's effort. There is still an hour to go in all those games.

  45. 1940:
    Spanish La LigaLatest scores

A name familiar to Arsenal fans has just equalised for Real Sociedad against Elche, Carlos Vela firing in his second in La Liga this season. There is under 10 minutes left in that game.

Just two other games in La Liga later on Saturday as Espanyol host Valencia (2000 BST) and Villarreal are at home to Real Vallodolid (2200 BST)

  46. 1933:
Serie A in ItalySampdoria v Juventus (1945 BST)

Carlos Tevez was one of a trio of summer signings for Juventus, with Fernando Llorente and Angelo Ogbonna also joining the league champions.

Tevez is the only one to start against Sampdoria, with Ogbonna and Llorent on the bench, but coach Antonio Conte believes the three will have plenty to offer this season.

"I'm very happy with the three new signings," Conte said. "They've fitted in well and will help us out a great deal."

He added: "It will be an extremely tough campaign. Certain teams have significantly bolstered their ranks. We can't hide from the fact that we're favourites. But the favourites don't always win. We'll need to show we're the strongest."

  47. 1928:
    Eredivisie Dutch leagueLatest scores

Could there be a surprise brewing in the Netherlands?

Leaders PSV Eindhoven appear to be suffering from a Champions League hangover after falling behind at lowly Heracles. Having drawn 1-1 against AC Milan in midweek, they're trailing to Lerin Duarte's early goal although there is still a long way to go in that one.

Elsewhere, bottom club NEC have allowed a 2-0 lead slip against RKC Waalwijk. It is 2-2 in the closing stages, while Roda JC have gone ahead away to Den Haag.

So Carlos Tevez will lead the line for Juventus in their opening league match at Sampdoria. The striker, who moved to the Italian side from Manchester City in June, impressed in the Super Cup victory against Lazio last week, scoring as they won 4-0. Do you think he will excel in the Serie A this season? If not, which striker do you think will top the goal-scoring charts this season?

Also, can Juventus secure a third successive league title? Who will be their closest challengers? I'd love to read your views so send them over to #bbceurofooty

Earlier, Bayern Munich set a new club record of 28 Bundesliga games unbeaten with a 2-0 victory over Nuremberg. It was also their third win of the season.

Serie A in ItalySampdoria v Juventus (1945 BST)

  54. 1852:
Serie A in ItalyFULL-TIME- Hellas Verona 2-1 AC Milan

What a start to life back in the Italian top-flight for Hellas Verona! Inspired by the 36-year-old Luca Toni, who scored two goals on his debut, they have beaten AC Milan. Mario Balotelli sits on the pitch and stares intently ahead at the final whistle. A frustrating 90 minutes for the striker.

  55. 1848:
Serie A in ItalyHellas Verona 2-1 AC Milan
    Mario Balotelli

Mario Balotelli is absolutely fuming as he tumbles inside the area when challenging for the ball with two Hellas Verona defenders. The referee is not convinced and instead books Balotelli, who angry demonstrates his frustration.

  56. 1846:
Serie A in ItalyHellas Verona 2-1 AC Milan

A hearts in the mouths moment for Hellas Verona fans as AC Milan go close. Andrea Petagna heads the ball across the face of goal and Verona clear, but do so via Verona defender Domenico Maietta, who lashes the ball just over his own crossbar.

  57. 1840:
Serie A in ItalyHellas Verona 2-1 AC Milan

AC Milan are seeing more of the ball at the moment but Hellas Verona defending well. Milan are getting no change when trying to break into the area but they almost equalise with an effort from distance. Riccardo Montolivo cracking an effort from 30 yards than skips through the defence, but Rafael gets down well to make the save.

  58. 1835:
Serie A in ItalyHellas Verona 2-1 AC Milan

Is Luca Toni really 36? Whatever he eats in the morning I want some because he is on fire against AC Milan. The striker smartly flicks the ball through the legs of a defender and attempts to run on to his own pass inside the area but falls, seemingly under the challenge of Cristian Zapata.

He sits on the ground and raises his hands in frustration. Approaching the final 10 minutes.

Mtshulembo: Juventus will win the title because they have a good squad and two good strikers now.

Serie A in ItalySUBSTITUTION- Hellas Verona 2-1 AC Milan
    AC Milan

Double substitution for AC Milan as manager Massimiliano Allegri looks to shake things up a bit. The ineffective duo of Stephan El Shaarawy and M'Baye Niang make way for Andrea Petagna and Urby Emanuelson, who come in to support Mario Balotelli.

  61. 1820:
Serie A in ItalyHellas Verona 2-1 AC Milan

Another chance for Hellas Verona as they break swiftly on a counter through Raphael Martinho. Luca Toni races with him and is screaming for the ball on the far side of the area but Martinho opts to shoot and Christian Abbiati grateful pushes the effort away.

  62. 1816:
Serie A in ItalyHellas Verona 2-1 AC Milan

Luca Toni proving just as influential at the back for Hellas Verona as he has been in attack. He gets in the way of Riccardo Montolivo's shot from a corner before Mario Balotelli has a shot blocked inside the area as AC Milan try to get back into the game.

  63. 1810:
Serie A in ItalyGOAL- Hellas Verona 2-1 AC Milan - Luca Toni

Well what a start to the Serie A season we have here! After Bosko Jankovic sees a powerful header saved, the Serbian midfielder hits a deep cross with the outside of his boot towards the far post where Luca Toni rises to again head into the back of the net. Two goals on his league debut.

Ruaridh Williams: As a Hannover fan, I'd like to say Happy Birthday to Robert Enke. Gone, but never forgotten. A nice win in his memory today.

Former Germany goalkeeper Robert Enke would have been 36 today. The former Borussia Monchengladbach, Benfica, Barcelona and Hannover player killed himself on 10 November 2009.

At the time of his death, Enke was widely considered to be a leading contender for Germany's number one spot at the 2010 World Cup. He won eight caps for the national team. His former side Hannover beat Schalke 2-1 earlier.

French Ligue 1FULL-TIME- Valenciennes 0-1 Marseille
Marseille's Andre-Pierre Gignac celebrates afrer scoring the winer against Valenciennes

Marseille - if only for a few hours - go top of the table thanks to a dramatic late goal by Andre-Pierre Gignac. Was it deserved? Probably not, but it is results like this that separate title challengers from the also-rans.

Valenciennes gave the visitors a real scare but Marseille weathered the pressure as the rain fell in northern France before securing maximum points to leapfrog Lyon and Monaco.

However, Lyon will go top if they defeat Reims later.

Hemant Pathak: Juventus. A team having strong determination to win Scudetto this season and No. 10 shirt- Carlos Tevez, a huge difference.

  71. 1747:
Serie A in ItalyHALF-TIME- Hellas Verona 1-1 AC Milan

Entertaining stuff in Verona. Andrea Poli giving AC Milan a deserved lead after they dominated the early stages, but the hosts showed the kind of enthusiasm often present in newly promoted teams and they equalised when Luca Toni headed in from a corner.

I wouldn't rule them out of a causing a bit of a surprise in this game based on the showing so far.

  72. 1746:
Serie A in ItalyHellas Verona 1-1 AC Milan

AC Milan appear just a little unsettled by Luca Toni's equaliser and are struggling to create much of note. They are awarded another free kick midway inside Hellas Verona's half and Mario Balotelli is over the ball again, but this time is effort is well wide.

  73. 1745:
    French Ligue 1GOAL- Valenciennes 0-1 Marseille - Andre-Pierre Gignac

And this is why Marseille are again being touted as strong challengers for the title. Having struggled to impress for long periods, last season's runners-up take the lead with five minutes remaining as Andre-Pierre Gignac taps home from close range following a corner.

You have to feel sorry for Valenciennes who have given the visitors a run for their money but are heading for defeat.

  74. 1738:
Serie A in ItalyHellas Verona 1-1 AC Milan

Luca Toni is causing plenty of bother at the moment and he receives the ball on the edge of the area, swivels and shoots a dipping effort at goal that keeper Christian Abbiati manages to parry away. Good stuff from Toni and Hellas Verona at the moment.

  75. 1732:
    French Ligue 1Valenciennes 0-0 Marseille

The rain is falling in Valenciennes and Marseille's 100% winning start is in danger of ending in northern France unless they can produce something special in the closing stages of their third match of the new season.

Dimitri Payet has just forced a save from home goalkeeper Nicolas Penneteau but it was a comfortable stop and the visitors are growing more frustrated as the clock ticks down. Eighteen minutes remaining.

  76. 1730:
Serie A in ItalyGOAL- Hellas Verona 1-1 AC Milan - Luca Toni
    Luca Toni

After soaking up plenty of pressure from AC Milan, Hellas Verona enjoy a spell of dominance themselves and take full advantage.

Luca Toni, a goalscorer wherever he has played, has already endeared himself to the Verona fans and he further enhances his reputation in their eyes as he is left unmarked to head home the equaliser. Plenty of life in those 36-year-old legs.

Who do you think will win Serie A this season and why? Will Juventus breeze to a third successive title? Or will Napoli and AC Milan prove to be closer challengers this time?

  78. 1723:
Serie A in ItalyHellas Verona 0-1 AC Milan

AC Milan are all over Hellas Verona after taking the lead. They win a free kick just inside the home side's half and Mario Balotelli fancies it as a shooting opportunity. The former Manchester City striker is not far off as his rasping shot flies a few inches over the bar.

  79. 1718:
French Ligue 1CLOSE!- Valenciennes 0-0 Marseille

What a let off for Marseille as goalkeeper Steve Mandanda blocks an effort by Jean-Christophe Bahebeck but the loose ball is almost turned into his own net by Benoit Cheyrou. The visitors are living dangerously here.

  80. 1715:
Serie A in ItalyGOAL- Hellas Verona 0-1 AC Milan - Andrea Poli

AC Milan carve open the Hellas Verona defence to score the first goal of the Serie A season courtesy of Andrea Poli. Mario Balotelli deserves plenty of credit, though, with his ball slipping Poli through and he coolly finishes.

  81. 1713:

First real goal-scoring opportunity as Mario Balotelli picks up the ball just outside the area and lazily shoots at goal. His effort has power though, and Hellas Verona goalkeeper Rafael gets down low to thump the ball away.

  82. 1710:
Serie A in ItalyHellas Verona 0-0 AC Milan

Perhaps buoyed by their first season back in the top flight, the home fans are in great voice, belting out their own rendition of "country roads" as Hellas Verona win the games first corner. Raphael Martinho takes it, but massively over hits and the AC Milan clear.

Patient build up by AC Milan in the opening stages and they produce the first effort on goal, Riccardo Montolivo fancying his chances from some 35 yards but his effort sails over the crossbar.

AC Milan kick off at Hellas Verona and the Italian season is under way.

  85. 1658:
Serie ASampdoria v Juventus (1945 BST)

So as I mentioned right back at the very start of this live text commentary, Juventus are bidding for a third successive Serie A league title. Antonio Conte's side were comfortable winners last season, finishing nine points ahead of Napoli.

However, more than a few Juventus fans were probably getting a little bit twitchy during pre-season, with results uninspiring to say the least. They had won just two of their six friendlies - one of those against a team who plies their trade in the sixth tier of Italian football.

Those results were swiftly forgotten, though, when Juventus thrashed Lazio 4-0 in the Supercoppa, Carlos Tevez leading the line superbly on his debut and capping it off with a goal.

  86. 1654:
French Ligue 1HALF-TIME- Valenciennes 0-0 Marseille
    Valenciennes v Marseille

Marseille can go top of the table if they win at Valenciennes but Elie Baup's side are finding it tough going away from home.

They go in at the interval goalless, France international midfielder Mathieu Valbuena going closest for the visitors with a speculative attempt that landed on the roof of the net. There's work to do in the second half for Les Phoceens.

  87. 1650:
    Serie A in Italy

Watford manager Gianfranco Zola, who lit up the Italian league while playing for Napoli in the early 1990s, spoke to BBC World Service this week to give his thoughts on the start of the new Serie A season.

"There has been a lot of talk about Italian football off the pitch," he said. "We have lost important players like Edinson Cavani but we have gained others like Carlos Tevez, which is certainly good for Italian football.

"This is another opportunity for Italian football to show their true value. Other countries like England, Spain and Germany - their leagues are really getting better and the Italian league has to work on catching up on that."

  88. 1645:
Serie AHellas Verona v Milan (1700 BST)

Following the mayor of Verona's criticism of Mario Balotelli (1631 BST), AC Milan manager Massimiliano Allegri was quick to respond.

He said in his pre-match news conference: "Racism is not just Balotelli, it's a cultural problem that still exists in Italy. Mario's fine and like the others, he focused on his game. I hope the day won't be spoiled. Mario has to control his behaviour as it's up to the referees to manage the match but I doubt the referee's decisions will decide the match. We have to show respect but also competitiveness."

He added: "I hope he'll score 30 goals but it's better if the goals come from all the forwards. He can turn into one of the best players in the world but like all young player he still has to improve in certain aspects."

    Bayern Munich's Arjan Robben

Two goals in the space of nine minutes by Franck Ribery and Arjan Robben ensure Bayern Munich's winning start under Pep Guardiola continues. The pair struck in the 68th and 77th minutes in front of a sell-out 71,000 crowd at the Allianz Arena to see off Nuremberg in the Bavarian derby.

Bayern join Borussia Dortmund on nine points from three games while Bayer Leverkusen are the other team with a 100% record after a 4-2 win over Borussia Monchengladbach - Stefan Kiebling, Sidney Sam (2) and Gozalo Castro scoring for the hosts.

Hoffenheim twice went ahead against Freiburg before being forced to settle for a point in a dramatic 3-3 draw, while Mainz beat Wolfsburg 2-0 and Hannover overcame Schalke 2-1.

James: Looking forward to seeing Gonzalo Higuain, shame he don't join Arsenal.

  92. 1631:
Serie A in ItalyWHY ALWAYS ME?
    Mario Balotelli

Mario Balotelli. Love him or hate him, you can guarantee he will always provide interesting talking points. Last week, he met and shook hands with Pope Francis, appearing to share a joke with the head of the Catholic church.

But before a ball has even been kicked in anger, Balotelli has already found himself the subject of criticism this week, with the mayor of Verona, claiming the striker brings abuse upon himself.

"Mario is a troublemaker. There are lots of black players [in Italy] and those who don't wind up opposition fans don't have any problems," Flavio Tosi told Radio Sportiva.

Mario Balotelli starts for AC Milan, as does Stephan El Shaarawy. Kevin Prince Boateng misses out but Nigel de Jong recovers from injury to make the bench. For Hellas Verona, Luca Toni starts in attack.

    Luca Toni

As Theo mentions, Hellas Verona are embarking on their first season in the Italian top flight since 2002 after finishing top of Serie B last season.

Starts don't come much more daunting than against AC Milan, but they made a very useful acquisition in the summer, bringing in veteran striker Luca Toni. He scored his first goal for the club in the Coppa Italia last week.

Theo Neumann: Incredibly nervous. Our first game back in the top-flight for 11 years, BUT, Milan usually start slowly. FORZA HELLAS!

German BundesligaLatest scores- Bayern Munich 2-0 Nuremberg

Pep Guardiola's 100% winning start as Bayern Munich manager is set to continue as his side go 2-0 ahead thanks to a wonderful piece of skill by Arjen Robben.

The former Chelsea player skips past two Nuremberg defenders before finding the net from an acute angle. Pep's men are finally turning on the style after enduring a frustrating afternoon.

So, as always, I'd love for you to share your thoughts on all things European football, with a particular slant on the Italian league.

Which player do you think will shine in Serie A this season? Will Napoli suffer as a result of Edinson Cavani's departure to Paris St-Germain, or has new boss Rafael Benitez invested wisely? How will Carlos Tevez get on at Juventus?

As the previous update shows there is plenty of action already under way across Europe. We'll have updates from the Bundesliga, where Bayern Munich look set to maintain their perfect start to the season, while in France, Marseille have just got under way against Valenciennes. There are also three games in Spain taking place and we'll have all the scores right here. So sit back and settle in for our merry venture across the continent.

German BundesligaLatest scores- Bayern Munich 1-0 Nuremberg
    Bayern Munich v Nurenberg

There are 71,000 fans packed into the Allianz Arena and the majority of them have been frustrated as hosts Bayern Munich have struggled to stamp their authority against Nuremberg in the Bavarian derby.

But in the last few moments Franck Ribery has nodded Bayern into a 70th minute lead. Munich had mounted wave after wave of attacks but could find no way past goalkeeper Raphael Schafer, who saved a 33rd minute penalty from David Alba after Per Nilsson was harshly adjudged to have fouled Ribery.

Schafer produced a finger-tip save to keep out Mario Mandzukic's 60th minute header before Ribery struck with a powerful header.

Elsewhere, it is Bayer Leverkusen 2-2 Borussia Monchengladbach; Hoffenheim 2-2 Freiburg; Hannover 2-1 Schalke; Mainz 0-0 Wolfsburg.

  101. 1604:
    Serie A in Italy

Welcome to our latest offering of European football. The Spanish, German and French seasons are already in full swing but today it is the turn of the Italian teams to join the fun.

Some naysayers have accused Serie A of being boring and defensive in the past but just looking at some of the names in action today alone highlights the stunning array of talent on display in the division.

We are set to be served up the unpredictable brilliance of Mario Balotelli and the ever-dangerous Stephan El Shaarawy as AC Milan take on Hellas Verona (1700 BST), before Paul Pogba, Fernando Llorente and Carlos Tevez take centre stage when reigning champions Juventus travel to Sampdoria. Ecellente.

  102. 1600:
    Serie A starts in Italy

Seven years ago Juventus were at their lowest ebb. Relegated to the second division and tainted by their involvement in a match-fixing scandal, they were a shadow of their former selves.

But since their darkest hour, they have risen like the proverbial phoenix from the flames, claiming their 28th and 29th Serie A titles in each of the last two seasons.

The Old Lady is up from her rocking chair, has cast aside her walking stick and is stronger than ever before. Can anyone halt the Juventus juggernaut as they bid for a third successive Scudetto?
