That's a wrap then - get the League Cup show on in five minutes' time and relive the drama all over again.

    See you later.

  2. 2253:

Drama at Elche as the minnows equalise in the last minute at home to Real Madrid - only for Cristiano Ronaldo to score a penalty in stoppage-time to give Real a 2-1 win.

  3. 2253:

Edwin Jabbari: Great character from the boys (literally) to go the distance and win vs West Brom. The future is definitely bright!

Mashidur Miah: Does Wenger go stick or twist with current mixture of youth and experience against Chelsea? If he sticks, could be curtains!

Tom Clifton: Wow! Never has the #bbcfootball text update been so needed! Nearly had a heart attack! But my Gunners have done it!!

  4. 2249:

This is some away run for the Arsenal. Next up for Arsene Wenger is a trip to Swansea on Saturday. A tough place to go if ever there was one.

  5. 2246:

Jack Elphick-Calle: What a performance from those young lads! To win a shootout, incredible! And the away record continues! 11 away wins in a row!

Jamie Atkins: Pleased to win? Yes. Pleased that our youngsters will get destroyed by £150 million worth a talent in the next round? No.

Damian Fogarty: Wenger needs to be congratulated for how he brings in and backs his young players.

You're all on message with Phil Brown. Good work.

  6. 2243:

Arsenal now face Chelsea in the fourth round then - the tie of the round.

  7. 2242:

Steven: You know this pressing refresh to see what's happening in the penalty shoot out is just as good/tense as watching it.

  8. 2240:

Great penalty shoot-out. Arsenal win 4-3 and Phil Brown breaks the world record for the use of 'young lads' in a 10-minute period.

The young boys, young lads showed great bottle. A fabulous night for the young lads, great stuff from young lads. They're young lads.

  10. 2240:
SCORES!- West Brom 3-4 Arsenal - Nacho Monreal

    Woosh! Straight down the middle.

  11. 2239:
WIDE!- West Brom 3-3 Arsenal - Morgan Amalfitano

Another miss, wide of the target. Advantage Arsenal.

  12. 2239:
SCORES!- West Brom 3-3 Arsenal - Chuba Akpom

Bottom corner. No mistake from the 17-year-old.

  13. 2238:
WIDE!- West Brom 3-2 Arsenal - Craig Dawson

Oh dear, Craig Dawson misses the target. One failure apiece.

  14. 2238:
SCORES!- West Brom 3-2 Arsenal - Kris Olsson

Bottom corner, just eluding the dive of the keeper.

  15. 2237:
SCORES!- West Brom 3-1 Arsenal - James Morrison

From the Steven Reid school of penalties. Top corner.

  16. 2236:
SAVED!- West Brom 2-1 Arsenal - Serge Gnabry

Luke Daniels dives to his right to make the save. Poor penalty.

  17. 2236:
SCORES!- West Brom 2-1 Arsenal - Markus Rosenberg

Straight down the middle. The keeper dived to his left. No contest.

  18. 2235:
SCORES!- West Brom 1-1 Arsenal - Nicklas Bendtner

Cool as you like - right foot, into the bottom right-hand corner.

  19. 2234:
SCORES!- West Brom 1-0 Arsenal - Steven Reid

Steven Reid smashes the ball into the top right-hand corner.

  20. 2234:

    Here we go then

  21. 2233:

Lee (a Birmingham fan) via text on 81111: Re Henry at 2218: Swans were hardly fielding a weakened team. Wilfried Bony alone cost more than our starting 11 combined. Swans were simply beaten at their own game.

  22. 2230:
PENALTY SHOOT-OUT- West Brom 1-1 Arsenal

It's spot kicks then. You couldn't have asked for more chances in the final period to be fair. Stand by for a live text shoot-out. Always fun.

  23. 2230:
    FULL-TIME- West Brom 1-1 Arsenal
  24. 2228:
    West Brom 1-1 Arsenal

    Into the 119th minute...

  25. 2227:
    CLOSE!- West Brom 1-1 Arsenal

Arsenal just can't defend here, they are out on their feet. Scott Sinclair comes in at the back post and has a chance to win it but he can't connect. Arsenal on the ropes...

  26. 2227:
    GET INVOLVED via #bbcfootball

Ogunkunle Oluwatobi: Not a vintage performance from Man United but nonetheless a welcome relief after Sunday's baptism of fire.

Steve: Only three non-Premier League sides left in the draw and all three have got potentially winnable home ties.

Fraser West: Swansea were completely outclassed by Blues' passing, a full-strength Swansea with Michu would still have lost.

  27. 2226:
    CLOSE!- West Brom 1-1 Arsenal

Close again! Arsenal clear the ball off the line after a lightning break from West Brom. Morgan Amalfitano in the thick of it again.

  28. 2225:
HITS THE WOODWORK- West Brom 1-1 Arsenal

Arsenal's Hector Bellerin, the 18-year-old Spaniard who has come off the bench to make his first-team debut, pokes just wide after a tricky little run. He looks a neat little player.

But there's some controversy here! An Arsenal youngster goes down with cramp, West Brom play on - as they are within their rights to do - and Morgan Amalfitano hits the bar! We almost had a Kanu moment...

  29. 2223:
MANAGER REACTION- Man Utd 1-0 Liverpool
    David Moyes

Manchester United boss David Moyes: "We had to try and come out and show something a bit better than we had done (against Liverpool and City). We had to bounce back and I thought it was a good result tonight. It's given me a chance to see some players I haven't seen much and it's given me food for thought.

"Ryan Giggs was great tonight, his play was great, he's some player he really is.

"You really only want home draws, Norwich are a good side. We'll give them the respect they deserve."

  30. 2221:

Some super-fast editing will be required, but highlights of all the third round ties will be on the League Cup Show on BBC One at 2305 BST. West Brom v Arsenal may have to be last on mind.

  31. 2220:
    West Brom 1-1 Arsenal

Ten minutes to go. Ten minutes from spot-kicks.

  32. 2219:
    CLOSE!- West Brom 1-1 Arsenal

West Brom win a corner, it runs through to substitute Markus Rosenberg - who shoots wide! Deflected though and it was not far away at all.

  33. 2218:
EXTRA TIME- West Brom 1-1 Arsenal

I'll try a spot of commentators' curse. This is a nailed on penalty shoot-out...

  34. 2218:

Henry in Radley via text on 81111: a Swansea B team was never going to beat Birmingham away. Michu would have made all the difference.

John in Hereford: Big fuss about Man United scraping a 1-0 win in the League Cup shows their level of expectation this season.

Raj, a United fan: Who knows, in 15 years we could be talking about this United game being the one that saved Moyes' career, similar to Fergie.

  35. 2213:

What did you make of the return of Luis Suarez? Did Manchester United deserve their victory? Were Liverpool unlucky? You can debate these points on the BBC Facebook page.

  36. 2213:

Shane McMenemy: Perfect League Cup draw for Man United. Tough Premier League opponents at home. Great fixture for youngsters in the squad.

Nick: C'mon West Brom, score the winner. From a Chelsea fan.

  37. 2212:
    HALF-TIME- West Brom 1-1 Arsenal

In the closing stages of the first period of extra-time. The winners of this one will face Chelsea and they maybe know it. Slow stuff. There's the whistle.

  38. 2210:
    Shinji Kagawa

Mann in Walsall on text: Yet more evidence tonight that Kagawa is a number 10 and not a wide player. If anyone who is related to Mr Moyes reads this then please tell him to play Shinji through the middle with the words 'Go and play son' said to him as he walks out the dressing room.

  39. 2207:
MANAGER REACTION- Man Utd 1-0 Liverpool

Manchester United manager David Moyes: "The movement is great for the goal, that's what Chicharito is all about. He finds space so well. Both games against Liverpool have been tight and have been settled by a goal from a set-piece."

  40. 2206:
    GET INVOLVED via #bbcfootball

Marcus Sheldrick: Not a season changing win for United, but after some poor showings against rivals a confidence booster at the very least.

Peter Klein: Still not convinced by United. Poor in possession, very conservative, and they relied on a schoolboy error to get their goal.

Zara Al-Sharifi: Always a good night when United beat Liverpool on home turf!

  41. 2205:

Newcastle v Manchester City? I guess the tie of the round will be Arsenal v Chelsea should the Gunners see off West Brom in the next few minutes.

  42. 2205:
    West Brom 1-1 Arsenal

What a tackle. Craig Dawson strains every sinew to get in a superb last-ditch challenge to rob Nicklas Bendtner, just as the Dane pulls back his boot with the goal beckoning.

  43. 2205:

    Tottenham Hotspur v Hull City

    Newcastle United v Manchester City

  44. 2204:

    Burnley v West Ham United

West Bromwich Albion / Arsenal v Chelsea

  45. 2203:

    Birmingham City v Stoke City

    Manchester United v Norwich City

  46. 2203:

    Sunderland v Southampton

    Leicester City v Fulham

  47. 2201:

    Here's the draw then...

  48. 2158:
MANAGER REACTION- Man Utd 1-0 Liverpool
    Brendan Rodgers

Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers: "It was a very close game - decided on a corner at the beginning of the half that we're disappointed with. It just drops into the six-yard box and it's very disappointing to say the least.

"The players played really well. They had a few days to adapt to a new system. They created some opportunities but couldn't make the final pass count and didn't work the keeper enough.

"I can have no complaints. One lapse of concentration has cost us.

"I thought Luis Suarez was excellent. You could tell he'd been out for a long time as he tired at the end. But he's obviously a threat. I think adrenaline gets you over the line in the first game. But he's a fighter. He's so determined and will get ready for the weekend."

  49. 2158:
Phil Brown, Former Hull and current Southend boss on BBC 5 live sports extraWest Brom 1-1 Arsenal

"The young substitutes that Arsenal have brought on could be an important factor, but West Brom looked dangerous in the last 30 minutes of the match and if they could compose themselves then I fancy them to win it."

  50. 2157:
    SUBSTITUTION- West Brom 1-1 Arsenal

James Morrison and Markus Ronsenberg are on for West Brom for extra-time.

  51. 2155:

    ...Honest. Hold on...

  52. 2152:
EXTRA TIME- West Brom 1-1 Arsenal

So we go to extra-time then...

  53. 2151:
    FULL-TIME- West Brom 1-1 Arsenal
  54. 2150:
PLAYER REACTION- Man Utd 1-0 Liverpool
    Chris Smalling

Manchester United defender Chris Smalling: "It was a massive turnaround (from the weekend), especially with players who haven't played a lot of games this season. The noise from the fans was amazing.

"There was a lot of doubt after the weekend so we had to go out and get a performance and we did.

"It felt like it was end to end for pretty much 90 minutes. A real cup tie."

  55. 2149:

Adnan in London via text on 81111: If Bendtner scores now, I will ignore the truly awful haircut he has for the rest of his Arsenal playing days.

Cameron: So pleased Newcastle are through. Looking to end our trophy drought this year!

Andy in Manchester: A second string United team beat a first choice Liverpool 11. Good work Moyes.

  56. 2149:
PLAYER REACTION- Man Utd 1-0 Liverpool

Manchester United defender Jonny Evans: "I hope the fans enjoyed the game. We certainly did. It was a hard game. They were playing expansive football. I bet it was entertaining to watch. Thankfully we got the goal after half time and we could hold on.

"They put out a strong team, with most of their players playing at the weekend. But this was my first start of the season. We were getting a bit tired at the end.

"We want to win it (the cup). It was the first trophy I won and it was a great feeling. So it's a competition we take seriously and we'd be proud to win it."

  57. 2146:
    CLOSE!- West Brom 1-1 Arsenal

West Brom striker Shane Long almost latches on to a floated free-kick. Neither side look like they fancy another 30 minutes of action.

  58. 2145:
    West Brom 1-1 Arsenal

Will we get a late winner at West Brom? Or are we on for extra-time?

  59. 2145:

Aberdeen, Dundee United and Motherwell are safely through to the Scottish League Cup quarter-finals and Hearts could join them, so long as they keep their 3-2 lead in extra-time against Queen of the South.

  60. 2142:

    David Moyes

Ed Gutteridge: Excellent response to Sunday from United. Well done that Moyes!

Ryan Blake: Unlucky to lose against what looks a really poor Man United team. Suarez was head and shoulders above anyone on that pitch.

Steve Cohen: So Liverpool are focusing on the FA Cup this season.

  61. 2142:

The draw is coming up. You'll hear all the ties as they happen, get that filofax out...

  62. 2141:
    CLOSE!- West Brom 1-1 Arsenal

Still playing at The Hawthorns, that was a 2000 BST kick-off don't forget. Saido Berahino goes close to a winner for West Brom as he scampers in and unleashes a rising drive that is just a whisker over Lukasz Fabianski's bar.

  63. 2141:
BBC Radio 5 live summariser Kevin Kilbane at Old TraffordMan Utd 1-0 Liverpool

"It's a huge win for United. There was little to choose from between the two sides. In the end it was a set piece that was the margin."

  64. 2141:
    FULL-TIME- Birmingham 3-1 Swansea

Cupset alert - holders Swansea are out!

  65. 2140:
GOAL- Birmingham 3-1 Swansea - Wilfried Bony (90 mins)

Swansea's record signing Wilfried Bony heads in a late consolation.

  66. 2138:

What do you make of tonight's results then? Get in touch, usual channels...

  67. 2137:
    Tranmere 0-2 Stoke

From BBC Sport's Gary Rose at Prenton Park: "Goals from Stephen Ireland and Peter Crouch send Stoke through to the next round of the Capital One Cup but it was perhaps a little too close for comfort at times for manager Mark Hughes. Stoke dominated the first half but in truth the second belonged to Tranmere. They had chances but were let down by poor finishing before Crouch settled the Stoke fans' nerves, scoring a second with the last kick of the game."

  68. 2136:
BBC Radio 5 live summariser Kevin Kilbane at Old TraffordFULL-TIME- Man Utd 1-0 Liverpool

"Suarez has looked excellent. He got better and better as the game's gone on. In the second half he looked sharp and excellent in attack. It's a good sign for Liverpool."

  69. 2136:

One goal was enough then, Liverpool had plenty of good chances but it is Manchester United who go through.

  70. 2135:
    FULL-TIME- Tranmere 0-2 Stoke
  71. 2135:
    FULL-TIME- Man Utd 1-0 Liverpool
  72. 2134:
GOAL- Tranmere 0-2 Stoke - Peter Crouch (90 mins)

Right at the end, Peter Crouch gets his fourth goal in 35 games...

  73. 2134:
    FULL-TIME- Newcastle 2-0 Leeds
  74. 2133:

Aberdeen are safely through to the Scottish League Cup quarter-finals following a 5-0 win at Falkirk that featured a Scott Vernon hat-trick.

Dundee United and Motherwell are on course to join them each side currently holding a 2-0 lead in their respective ties with Partick Thistle and Livingston.

Hearts and Queen of the South are locked at 2-2 and Tynecastle looks the most likely destination for extra-time as things stand.

  75. 2133:
INJURY TIME- Man Utd 1-0 Liverpool

Ethan Robinson: Giggs showing there with that dribble what a class player he still is!

Noah Reich: Genuinely delighted to see Bendtner back in an Arsenal shirt. Badly need backup should Giroud get injured. Great assist!

Chris Harvey: Whatever the result, there'd be something wrong if Ashley Young starts United's next game and Nani was on the bench.

  77. 2129:
FINAL FIVE- Man Utd 1-0 Liverpool

Jordan Henderson slings in a cross which almost squeezes in at the near post, before Liverpool go close again! Kolo Toure shoots and Daniel Sturridge can't turn it in at the back post!

  78. 2129:
GOAL- West Brom 1-1 Arsenal - Saido Berahino (71 mins)

Arsenal cleared the initial set-piece, but they were not prepared for Steven Reid's lofted ball back into the box. Saido Berahino, who scored a hat-trick in the previous round against Newport County, finds a pocket of space among Arsenal's much taller defenders to nod in at the far post. Game on.

  79. 2128:
    Man Utd 1-0 Liverpool

Liverpool still pushing for a leveller. You feel that there may be one more chance for the visitors...

  80. 2126:
GOAL- Birmingham 3-0 Swansea - Tom Adeyemi (81 mins)

A tap-in seals the win for Birmingham! Chris Burke squares the ball for the former Norwich man Tom Adeyemi to finish it.

  81. 2125:
    Man Utd 1-0 Liverpool

The Old Trafford fans have a moment to savour as Luis Suarez sprints to reach a Daniel Sturridge pass and runs out of grass, sliding on his knees off the pitch. An unsavoury moment follows as Ryan Giggs and Jordan Henderson square up.

  82. 2123:
    SUBSTITUTION- Man Utd 1-0 Liverpool

Raheem Sterling on for Victor Moses. Last throw of the dice.

  83. 2122:
    Luis Suarez

Into the last 15 or so. Can Liverpool find a way back?

  84. 2119:
GOAL- West Brom 0-1 Arsenal - Thomas Eisfeld (61 mins)

Arsenal have been under the cosh during the second half, but they have showed a little quality in attack to snatch teh lead against the run of play. Nicklas Bendtner's defence-splitting pass gives Thomas Eisfeld a clean run on the goal and the German youngster gives the goalkeeper the eyes into one corner and strokes it into the other.

  85. 2118:

Aaron Ramsey's stock is at an all-time high. Sell! Sell! Sell!

  86. 2118:

Pete Nicholson: Whatever the final score tonight it's clear Liverpool are on the up and United are dropping off. United still marginally better.

James Sutton: The Capital One Cup is all well and good but I think Michael Laudrup is after the Europa League. What an achievement that would be.

Harry Pitt: Arsenal need to pick it up and get a goal. We don't even have a game changer on the bench. Where's Ramsey?

  87. 2117:
GREAT SAVE!- Man Utd 1-0 Liverpool

Wayne Rooney lines up a free-kick after Rafael is tripped on the edge of the box and Simon Mignolet makes an athletic stop to tip it away. The Belgian then throws himself the other way to turn aside another Rooney effort! United going for the throat.

  88. 2116:
BBC Radio 5 live summariser Kevin Kilbane at Old TraffordMan Utd 1-0 Liverpool

"Good save from De Gea (from Moses). One that you'd expect him to make but still very good. Liverpool really fancying their chances now."

You can listen to live commentary of this match on Radio 5 live.

  89. 2116:
    West Brom 0-0 Arsenal

West Brom are starting to get the upper hand and the home crowd are getting into the mood.

Shane Long is brought down by Thomas Vermaelen as the Arsenal man lunges into and fails to get the ball. The Belgian is perhaps fortunate to escape with a yellow.

Saido Berahino then looks poised to bury a Goran Popov cross at the far post, but loses his footing at the vital moment.

  90. 2114:
    SUBSTITUTION- Man Utd 1-0 Liverpool

Double change for Manchester United, as a peeved Chicharito is replaced by Adnan Januzaj, and Michael Carrick comes on in place of Shinji Kagawa.

  91. 2114:
    Tranmere 0-1 Stoke
Akpa Akpro (second left) in action for Tranmere

From BBC Sport's Gary Rose at Prenton Park: "Stoke have lost some of the fluidity they displayed in the first half at the moment, occasionally abandoning a patient build up in favour of long balls over midfield. That change in style seems to have been prompted by a couple of good chances for Tranmere. Akpa Akpro shot just over the bar following flowing attack before Chris Atkinson rifled a first-time effort just wide from no more than eight yards."

  92. 2113:
HITS THE WOODWORK- Man Utd 1-0 Liverpool

Luis Suarez takes the free-kick - hits the bar!

Liverpool are ratcheting up the pressure...

  93. 2112:
GREAT SAVE!- Man Utd 1-0 Liverpool

Liverpool pushing, and pushing hard now. Great save from David de Gea to keep out a bullet header from Victor Moses. He made a great connection but it was right at the keeper. Phil Jones then brings down Luis Suarez in a dangerous area.

  94. 2112:

George in Belfast via text on 81111: In the absence of a midfield creator like Coutinho, Liverpool are nothing more than another hard-working, efficient Premier League side. Severely lacking quality.

Charraig in Northern Ireland: Typical Liverpool performance this season! Nice passing but little end product in goals!

Richard in Manchester: Cannot for the life of me understand why Hernandez and Kagawa (through the middle) don't get more game time!

  95. 2111:
    CLOSE!- Man Utd 1-0 Liverpool

    Luis Suarez...Ooohh!

Wonderful touch from the Uruguayan to bring the ball down on his chest, skip away from Jonny Evans and then smash in a rising shot which flies into the side-netting. Very close indeedy.

Chris Hussey: Interesting choice to make Wayne Rooney captain - tactical by Moyes to get him to sign a new deal.

Rhodri Jones: How I'd love Wenger to buy Hernandez in January. Always scores goals!

  97. 2109:
    West Brom 0-0 Arsenal

German midfielder Thomas Eisfeld, whose only other appearance for Arsenal was in the far more exciting 7-5 win over Reading last October, has just blazed over the bar from a promising position.

  98. 2107:
GOAL- Newcastle 2-0 Leeds - Yoan Gouffran (67 mins)

Speaking of two-goal leads, Newcastle double their advantage as Yoan Gouffran rolls his defender on the edge of the box before smashing in a powerful shot. His first goal in Newcastle.

  99. 2106:
GOAL- Birmingham 2-0 Swansea - Matt Green (61 mins)
    Birmingham boss Lee Clarke

Swansea reeling and a rocking now! Ex-Mansfield man Matt Green gets across his marker to slide in a Chris Burke cross and make it 2-0.

  100. 2105:
HITS THE WOODWORK- Man Utd 1-0 Liverpool

Maybe this is why the consensus is that Shinji Kagawa should play in the middle? Fine play from the United man, slipping away from a tired challenge 30 yards out, working the ball on to his left peg and hammering in a rising shot which kisses the crossbar on the way over.

  101. 2103:
    Man Utd 1-0 Liverpool

Nani almost catches Liverpool out on the break, dancing past a man on the right of the area and blazing a shot high and wide. Into the last 30 minutes or so...

  102. 2102:
GOAL- Birmingham 1-0 Swansea - Dan Burn (57 mins)

Cupset O'Clock? The holders are heading out as on-loan Fulham centre-half Dan Burn - a giant of a man - towers in a header.

  103. 2101:
    CLOSE!- Newcastle 1-0 Leeds

Close to an equaliser at St James' Park as Matt Smith gets on the end of a deep cross but heads wide.

  104. 2100:
    CLOSE!- Man Utd 1-0 Liverpool

Luis Suarez's best opening of the night as he picks up a pass in space, the ball runs away from him and he drags his shot wide from 25 yards. He snatched at that rather, but he does get a corner. Will he last the full 90?

  105. 2059:

Second halves getting underway in Scotland with Hearts and Queen of the South still tied at 1-1. Dundee United lead Partick Thistle by two David Goodwillie goals and Bob McHugh's goal has given Motherwell a narrow advantage at Livingston.

  106. 2058:
    Birmingham 0-0 Swansea

A mistake from Garry Monk gives Matt Green a very good chance to break the deadlock but he is denied by a cracking save from Gerhard Tremmel.

  107. 2057:

Will in London via text on 81111: Re Kunal Gupta 2038: Manchester United have won two titles, a league cup and reached a Champions League final since Ronaldo and Tevez left. My heart bleeds that you haven't enjoyed a performance in that time.

Chris: Rooney needs to get the lycra leggings on the go - headband by itself just looks silly...

Paul: What has happened to Bendtner? He's beginning to look like Shevchenko...

  108. 2056:
PENALTY APPEAL- Man Utd 1-0 Liverpool

Jordan Henderson has a torrid 90 seconds as moments after missing that chance he clashes with Nani on the edge of the box. The winger wants a penalty and there did appear to be contact between the two, but referee Mark Clattenburg waves him to his feet.

  109. 2055:
    CLOSE!- Man Utd 1-0 Liverpool

Great chance for Liverpool! Daniel Sturridge unlocks the defence with a clever backheel, the ball runs into the path of Jordan Henderson but the England man side-foots wide from 10 yards. You have to hit the target from there...

  110. 2054:
    Man Utd 1-0 Liverpool

Alistair Magowan reports from Old Trafford: "That must have been some team-talk by David Moyes. The funny thing about that was both teams' staff were walking along touchline in the build-up to the corner with United coach Phil Neville, alongside Brendan Rodgers, appealing for it. Moyes then walked out the tunnel just before Wayne Rooney took it and celebrated before he even reached the dugout."

  111. 2052:
YELLOW CARD- Man Utd 1-0 Liverpool

Liverpool have raised it a notch since that goal, they look dangerous down the right but United then look to counter at pace, Wayne Rooney smartly moving into space only to be floored by the thighs of Kolo Toure. Toure booked for that one.

  116. 2049:
    Man Utd 1-0 Liverpool

That goal came just 39 seconds into the second half, a kick in the teeth for Liverpool. I think it was Jose Enrique who lost his man, but it was poor play all round. Can Liverpool lift it again?

  117. 2049:
    HALF-TIME- West Brom 0-0 Arsenal

Steven Reid sends a shot fizzing in from a free-kick, 25 yards out, and Arsenal goalkeeper Lukasz Fabianski has to be smart to get fingertips to guide it over the bar. That's half-time.

  118. 2047:
GOAL- Man Utd 1-0 Liverpool - Javier Hernandez (46 mins)

As soft a goal as you will see at the top level. A gimme for Manchester United as Wayne Rooney's corner finds Javier Hernandez in all sorts of space four yards out, the Mexican can't believe his luck and steers in the opener.

    Nicklas Bendtner

Still playing at The Hawthorns, where Nicklas Bendtner has been increasingly isolated up front on his own. Still, after two years in the wilderness - quite literally by the look of him - he's used to foraging for scraps.

Kunal Gupta: Can't remember the last time I properly enjoyed a United performance. Think it was back in the glory days of Ronaldo & Tevez.

  126. 2038:
    Newcastle 1-0 Leeds

Newcastle manager Alan Pardew will have strolled down the St James' Park tunnel feeling pretty happy with his side's display after a dominant first-half against Leeds. However, he may feel the Magpies should have more than a one-goal advantage to show for their control. Can Leeds make them pay after the break?

  127. 2037:

Two goals in five games? Come on now. Maybe Steve Bruce was right and we would be better off watching Corrie...

  128. 2036:
    Tranmere 0-1 Stoke

From BBC Sport's Gary Rose at Prenton Park: "Stoke head into the break with the lead thanks to Stephen Ireland's well-worked strike. The Potters have stroked the ball around the pitch with ease at times, but once or twice their players have perhaps been guilty of being more complacent than they deserve to be, given that they only lead by a solitary goal. Peter Crouch gifted possession to Tranmere's Ryan Lowe with a stray cross-field ball but, fortunately for the visitors, nothing came of that opportunity."

  129. 2035:
    Man Utd 0-0 Liverpool
Manchester United's Phil Jones (left) and Liverpool's Luis Suarez

Alistair Magowan reports from Old Trafford: "Half-time and Liverpool have the edge. Manchester United central midfield pairing Ryan Giggs and Phil Jones are not tracking Victor Moses and with a more careful touch, Luis Suarez could have put the visitors ahead."

  130. 2035:

Arsenal's Nicklas Bendtner (yellow) in action against West Brom

It has been a cagey start at the Hawthorns, but the best of the small selection of chances fell to Shane Long, whose header back across six-yard box found neither the net or a team-mate.

Scott Sinclair got back to make a timely tackle and stem a promising Arsenal attack at the other end. And, er, that's about it...

  143. 2024:

  148. 2020:
    Tranmere 0-1 Stoke

From BBC Sport's Gary Rose at Prenton Park: "Mark Hughes' determination to develop a passing side might have been tested on a cold Wednesday night at Tranmere, but it was lovely stuff from the visitors to open the scoring. Marko Arnautovic slid the ball through the home defence and Stephen Ireland ghosted through before side-footing the ball into the far corner. Tranmere have been firmly camped inside their own half since that goal - a sign that it could be a long night for the home fans."

"It is a comfortable game for both sides with neither able to raise much of an attacking threat. 153. 2014:
    CLOSE!- Newcastle 0-0 Leeds

Newcastle are dominating possession as they press for the opener. Papiss Cisse superbly chests the ball down to leave the goal gaping - but he woefully shoots into the Leeds sidenetting. The Senegal striker has not scored in 11 matches now - worrying times. Seconds later, Leeds forge a good opening. Big Matt Smith heads down but is denied by Newcastle keeper Tim Krul.

  155. 2012:
    West Brom 0-0 Arsenal

Arsenal striker Nicklas Bendtner has collided with the post after chasing hard to try and get onto the end of a cross in the West Brom box. The Dane looks a little dazed for a moment but he is back up and running.

  156. 2011:

Andy in Manchester via text on 81111: I can tell you now that Victor Moses will not be suited to this central role. His game is all about pace and running with the ball. Picking passes should be left to others.

Jack: Sturridge, Suarez, Moses. All quick and can score. Blistering attack.

Edward in Bristol: Looks like Suarez is full of running, obviously ate before the game on this occasion...

  157. 2011:

Aberdeen are well on top with a two-goal half-time lead against Falkirk. Elsewhere, the three other ties are midway through the first half with Hearts and Queen of the South locked at 1-1, Motherwell 1-0 up at Livingston and no goals between Dundee United and Partick Thistle.

  159. 2010:
OLD TRAFFORD ANALYSIS- Man Utd 0-0 Liverpool

Alistair Magowan reports from Old Trafford: "The return of Luis Suarez means that Liverpool have shifted from their usual 4-2-3-1 to a 3-5-2 with Victor Moses, who is already looking dangerous, playing behind Suarez and Daniel Sturridge. Jose Enrique and Jordan Henderson are the wide players."

  160. 2008:

"Excellent link up play between Sturridge and Suarez. Suarez had the pace to get away from Jonny Evans. But I felt he should have hit it with his right foot rather than toe poking it.

  161. 2008:
    CLOSE!- Newcastle 0-0 Leeds

Another decent chance goes begging for the home side. French attacker Yoan Gouffran finds himself unmarked at the near post but he can only glance a header across the face of the Leeds goal and out for a goal kick.

  162. 2008:
    CLOSE!- Man Utd 0-0 Liverpool

A glimpse of the genius of Luis Suarez. He collects a raking crossfield pass with a wonderful drop of the shoulder as the ball pinged over Jonny Evans' shoulder, a better touch and he's in, but it's not quite perfect and runs away from him.

He tangles with David de Gea as the ball runs out - but he had every right to go for that and there are no real complaints.

  163. 2007:
GOAL- Tranmere 0-1 Stoke - Stephen Ireland (23 mins)

  166. 2004:
    CLOSE!- Man Utd 0-0 Liverpool

Almost instantly after I say he is off the pace, Luis Suarez has two dangerous moments. Classic.

First he drops into space cleverly to find a yard but his shot is well blocked, before he collects another ball into feet and turns it around the corner for Daniel Sturridge to run on to but he shoots wide!

  167. 2004:
    Tranmere 0-0 Stoke

From BBC Sport's Gary Rose at Prenton Park: "Stoke have brought a surprisingly sizable following to Prenton Park this evening, and the 1,500 or so here were in fine voice prior to kick-off. They've had little to shout about since the game got under way, though, with Marko Arnautovic registering the only notable effort of the opening 15 minutes. The Austrian striker, who joined Stoke on transfer deadline day, sent a dipping effort from outside the box harmlessly wide."

  174. 1959:
    Tranmere 0-0 Stoke

Stoke have made a strong opening away at Tranmere, but so far they have been restricted to long-range efforts from Marko Arnautovic and Glenn Whelan.

  175. 1956:
    Man Utd 0-0 Liverpool

Lovely flowing move from Liverpool as Jose Enrique clips a cross to the back stick, it's perfectly weighted for Daniel Sturridge, but Alex Buttner just grows enough to nick a header away for a corner. A great ball in that.

  176. 1956:

They are making a right racket. Way up in the East Stand among them, there is a Uruguayan flag being waved. I couldn't hear anything too notable aimed at Luis Suarez as the players emerge at Old Trafford. In fact, 'You'll Never Walk Alone' is the most audible chant, as both sets of players manage the pre-match handshakes without any fun and games.

  194. 1939:

This is an odd sight at Old Trafford - Manchester United captain Wayne Rooney leading his side into the tunnel at Old Trafford. He then has a lengthy chat with ref Mark Clattenburg about the thickness and general pros and cons of his fancy padded headband thing.

Luis Suarez is at the back of the Liverpool line.

It's been a while since United and Liverpool last met in the League Cup.

In fact, it was before Luis Suarez had even turned pro - though he had already been red carded for headbutting a ref.

It was the final in 2003, played in Cardiff. Liverpool won 2-0 - local boys done good Steven Gerrard and Michael Owen scored.

Owen was good in a Cardiff cup final wasn't he?

  196. 1938:

Man Utd v Liverpool (1945 BST)

Roy Keane is at Old Trafford, happily signing autographs. Well, signing autographs anyway. It won't be a full house tonight but a big enough crowd for a League Cup third round tie. Kick-off just 10 minutes away now...

  198. 1935:

Martin Walmsley: I think Luis Suarez has learnt his lesson. Play him tonight and if he does it again or anything else wrong then sell him.

Martyn Murfitt-Wrather: Suarez should have been banned for life for his actions - no excuse for his behaviour and no place whatsoever for it in football or in any other profession.

Leszek Bloch: Suarez for Liverpool is like Messi for Barcelona and Ronaldo for Real Madrid. His influence may be crucial to reach the top four at the end of season. However he needs to behave, that's the point.

You can have your say on the BBC Sport Facebook page.

  199. 1934:

An injury to Luis Suarez? That would be all Liverpool need. It seems that he's fine though...

  200. 1934:

Alistair Magowan reports from Old Trafford: "This might amount to nothing, but Luis Suarez has twice clutched his left hamstring in the warm-up. Probably just a bit tight as the adrenaline kicks in, otherwise he is all smiles and fully involved in a bit of five a-side keep-ball."

  201. 1933:
MOTD presenter Gary LinekerMan Utd v Liverpool (1945 BST)

On BBC radio 5 live this afternoon: "Luis Suarez is a wonderfully gifted footballer but he has that dark side that emerges now and again. You just hope he learns really, but he will certainly give Liverpool something on the pitch.

"I like him as a player, I could watch him all day. There is never a dull moment with this fella. He'll play a couple of games and score a couple of goals and his relationship will stay the same with the supporters. Even though they were irked when he came out publicly and said he wanted to move, they are a forgiving lot if you play well."

  202. 1933:
BBC Radio 5 live summariser Kevin Kilbane at Old TraffordLUIS SUAREZ STARTS

"That's the thing that's always been asked - can Luis Suarez and Daniel Sturridge play together? I believe they can. Suarez has so much quality he can play anywhere.

"Playing behind Sturridge gives Suarez the freedom to float into areas where he's difficult to pick up. That's how he influences the game."

    Luis Suarez

David Newson: Über-excited to have Luis Suarez back tonight. A lot of water to go under the bridge but it's like having a new signing start!

Muzz: Liverpool fans celebrating Suarez's return as if he has been injured. He was suspended for biting someone. Have you forgotten this?

Shohidur Rahman: We have to win today. It wouldn't make up for Sunday's humiliating defeat but it would be a good start.

  204. 1929:

Just how good can you be at seven? I could barely trap a pass at that age. Mind you, my uncle's a solicitor from Stoke - not one of the most talented footballers ever to grace the Premier League...

  205. 1928:
West Brom v Arsenal (2000 BST)

Uruguay international defender Diego Lugano makes only his second Baggies start as Steve Clarke makes eight changes from the XI which began the 3-0 win over Sunderland on Saturday. Youssouf Mulumbu, Stephane Sessegnon and Scott Sinclair are the only survivors from the weekend.

Arsenal usher in a host of fresh faces as well with Per Metesacker and Serge Gnabry the only players to keep their place from the 3-1 win over Stoke. After loan spells at Sunderland and Juventus, Nicklas Bendtner is back to make his first appearance for the club while Jay-Jay Okocha's nephew, Alex Iwobi is named on the bench. The Gunners signed him as a seven-year-old.

  206. 1927:

It's a night of live action in the Scottish League Cup tonight as well - with the party already under way between Falkirk and Aberdeen.

That is one of four ties that you are able to follow in the Scottish live text. With Celtic out it's anyone's trophy surely?

  207. 1926:
    Newcastle v Leeds (1945 BST)

BBC Sport's Jonathan Jurejko: "Newcastle boss Alan Pardew admits he is dreaming of lifting the League Cup trophy at Wembley next year and is hoping to start by enjoying some home comforts tonight. Remarkably, it is only the Toon manager's second domestic cup tie at St James' Park since taking over in December 2010. But he is not planning on being too hospitable, in a footballing sense at least, to Leeds counterpart Brian McDermott - who was given his coaching break by Pardew at Reading in 2000."

  208. 1925:

Christopher Jack: Despite Liverpool's strong attack and solid defence, their midfield is distinctly average. Should be an end to end game.

Hafiz Braimah: Very young frontline for Arsenal. Injuries to many players gave Arsene Wenger fewer options. How hungry are these youngsters?

Niklas Lanwehr: True comeback of the day is Nicklas Bendtner.

  209. 1924:
Man Utd v Liverpool (1945 BST)

Alistair Magowan reports from Old Trafford: "Luis Suarez is one of the last out of the tunnel for the Liverpool team warm-up and there are a smattering of boos for the visiting side, as would probably expect for this hugely competitive and historic fixture. Interesting that Manchester United boss David Moyes is the manager who has named a second string, does that give him an out if his side loses?"

  210. 1921:

The all-important velvet bag will be out in force later on this evening, as the draw for the fourth round takes place after tonight's games.

So you want to know the numbers? Course you do:

    1. Burnley 2. Chelsea 3. Fulham 4. Hull City

    5. Leicester City 6. Manchester City 7. Norwich City 8. Southampton

    9. Sunderland 10. Tottenham Hotspur 11. West Ham United 12. Birmingham City / Swansea City

    13. Manchester United / Liverpool 14. Newcastle United / Leeds United

    15. Tranmere Rovers / Stoke City 16. West Bromwich Albion / Arsenal

  211. 1919:
    Steve Bruce

I'm sure you, like me, are eagerly awaiting this evening's Capital One Cup fayre. All except Steve Bruce, perhaps?

Speaking following his Hull's side's 1-0 victory over Huddersfield last night, Bruce said: "There was no real tempo to it because of what it was. It was more like a friendly than a cup tie.

"But that's what the early rounds of the cup have turned into now. It's a shame but there you have it. It was a comfortable evening for us but it was like watching paint dry. It was a drab cup tie and I think a lot of the fans that were here tonight will wish they'd stayed in and watched Coronation Street."

Come on Steve. Everybody knows Corrie isn't on on a Tuesday...

  212. 1917:
Man Utd v Liverpool (1945 BST)

So how will Luis Suarez cope with the pressure of making his return at Old Trafford? With no problems at all, according to Brendan Rodgers.

"The history of the clash doesn't enter my mind," the Reds boss told the Liverpool Echo. "He is a tough character and resilient. He is one of the strongest willed players I've come across in my life.

"He is a fighter and his desire to succeed is out there for everybody to see. We're delighted to have him back.

"It's a fixture that once it came out and he knew he was available for it, it will have stoked him up and got him even more ready. You could argue that it is a really good game for him to come back to."

  213. 1917:
BREAKING TEAM NEWS- West Brom v Arsenal (2000 BST)

Fit-again midfielder Mikel Arteta starts for Arsenal, as does Nicklas Bendtner for the first time since August 2011.

  214. 1915:
Man Utd v Liverpool (1945 BST)

Alistair Magowan reports from Old Trafford: "Manchester United boss David Moyes has used his programme notes to underline how he expects a reaction from his side after their Manchester derby mauling on Sunday. And despite the defeat at Anfield earlier this month, he wants a helping hand from supporters, some of whom are still sceptical about his new regime. 'The Anfield crowd played a big part a few weeks ago,' Moyes writes, 'but tonight it is the United supporters' turn to make a difference'."

  215. 1915:

Bradley Colley: David Moyes is taking the Capital Cup more seriously than the Premier League. He has a stronger side out - especially the forwards!

James Randall: I have a feeling that Liverpool will take United apart and Suarez will be on the scoresheet.

Adam: I'm a United fan but got to say Liverpool's starting 11 looks better than ours. Not said that for while!

  217. 1913:

With over 30 goals last night, Luis Suarez's return and the possible debut of Jay-Jay Okocha's nephew, there are plenty of tasty highlights to catch up on in the League Cup.

Luckily for you, there is an episode the League Cup show this evening on BBC One at 2305 BST. Say goodbye to that early night.

  218. 1912:
    LINE-UPS- Newcastle v Leeds (1945 BST)

Newcastle: Krul, Debuchy, Williamson, Coloccini, Dummett, Gouffran, Anita, Tiote, Marveaux, Sammy Ameobi, Cisse. Subs: Ben Arfa, Yanga-Mbiwa, Gosling, Bigirimana, Obertan, Vuckic, Alnwick.

Leeds: Kenny, Byram, Wootton, Pearce, Warnock, Austin, Mowatt, Tonge, McCormack, Smith, Poleon. Subs: Murphy, Green, Hunt, White, Brown, Diouf, Cairns.

    Referee: Mike Jones (Cheshire)

  219. 1911:
    Newcastle v Leeds (1945 BST)

BBC Sport's Jonathan Jurejko: "As promised, Newcastle boss Alan Pardew names a strong starting XI, which includes skipper Fabricio Coloccini, goalkeeper Tim Krul, midfielder Cheick Tiote and striker Papiss Cisse. Youngsters Paul Dummett and Sammy Ameobi are also handed chances, while French maverick Hatem Ben Arfa sits on the bench.

"Former England left-back Stephen Warnock returns after suspension in one of four changes for Leeds. Imposing striker Matt Smith, who you may remember was an FA Cup hero for Oldham against Everton and Liverpool last season, is also recalled by Whites boss Brian McDermott."

  220. 1909:

No 'will-he, won't-he' handshake games between Messrs. Suarez and Evra tonight then.

There is perhaps an audition in the Manchester United back four for a place as 'first reserve' though. Nemanja Vidic and Rio Ferdinand both had torrid afternoons in the weekend's Manchester derby. Expect some playing time to come the way of Jonny Evans, Phil Jones or Chris Smalling in the coming weeks...

  221. 1907:
Man Utd v Liverpool (1945 BST)

Alistair Magowan reports from Old Trafford: "So no easing in Luis Suarez from the bench, he is ready for action from the start, according to Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers. He will play alongside Daniel Sturridge in an attacking side that also has Jose Enrique replacing Daniel Agger, so Mamadou Sakho is expected to move into the centre of defence.

"Manchester United boss David Moyes makes eight changes to the side that were thumped at Manchester City. There is a whole new midfield with Shinji Kagawa involved, while captain Wayne Rooney will be partnered by Javier Hernandez. Patrice Evra, who was racially abused by Suarez in 2011, is not in the squad."

  222. 1906:
    Tranmere v Stoke (1945 BST)

From BBC Sport's Gary Rose at Prenton Park: "There has been a revolution of sorts at Stoke City where manager Mark Hughes has introduced a passing style this season wholly unfamiliar to a Potters side renowned for physicality and long-ball tactics. Stoke almost matched Arsenal for completed passes at the weekend and Hughes sees tonight's fixture as an opportunity to further develop a new style. For Tranmere, the game undoubtedly comes as welcome distraction from their League One woes - they have won just once all season."

  223. 1905:

Former Liverpool manager and player Kenny Dalglish: Welcome back Luis. Hopefully a successful outcome!!!

  224. 1905:
    LINE-UPS- Tranmere v Stoke (1945 BST)

Tranmere: Fon Williams, Hateley, Dugdale, Taylor, Horwood, Rowe, Atkinson, Power, Akpa Akpro, Lowe, Stockton. Subs: Holmes, Goodison, Thompson, Bell-Baggie, Sodje, Davies, Mooney.

Stoke: Sorensen, Cameron, Huth, Shawcross, Muniesa, Whelan, Palacios, Ireland, Pennant, Crouch, Arnautovic. Subs: Jones, Adam, Walters, Butland, Assaidi, Etherington, Wilkinson.

Ethan Robinson: Suarez has got a lot of work to do to win back trust of Liverpool.

Varuth Kuonsongtham: Liverpool get their goalscoring machine back. Man United need to make up for Sunday's thrashing. This game is going to be good.

  226. 1903:
    LINE-UPS- Birmingham v Swansea (1945 BST)

Birmingham: Doyle, Spector, Burn, Robinson, Reilly, Caddis, Adeyemi, Hancox, Burke, Green, Ferguson. Subs: Ambrose, Lovenkrands, Arthur, Lee, Shinnie, Allan, Townsend.

Swansea: Tremmel, Tiendalli, Amat, Monk, Taylor, Lamah, de Guzman, Britton, Pozuelo, Shelvey, Bony. Subs: Vorm, Chico, Michu, Routledge, Canas, Vazquez, Ben Davies.

    Referee: Keith Stroud (Hampshire)

  227. 1902:
Man Utd v Liverpool (1945 BST)

Poor Brendan Rodgers must feel like he's dealing with a naughty toddler sometimes. Not only is he having to cope with Luis Suarez's disciplinary issues but he then has to keep the little Uruguayan in check when he declares he wants to go and play somewhere else. It's been a heck of a summer for Rodgers and Suarez, and former Kop favourite Robbie Fowler reckons the South American striker is on his last chance at Anfield.

"He has let a lot of people down, including himself," Fowler told BBC Sport. "The club have stood by him, so have the Liverpool supporters, and you can see why because he is a phenomenal player and you want phenomenal players in your side.

"I don't think he'll get many more chances but I don't think he will be doing anything remotely as silly as he has."

  228. 1901:

Daniel via text on 81111: People take Luis Suarez and his issues too seriously. Simply, football is entertainment and Suarez is probably the most entertaining footballer in the country.

James in Kent: People saying that Liverpool don't need Suarez are pretty short sighted. With Philippe Coutinho out, couldn't be better timed. How many other clubs would avoid using a world class talent?

Andy in Manchester: Up until the biting incident, I would argue that Suarez was the best player in the league last season. Of course he walks straight into the team.

  229. 1900:
    Newcastle v Leeds (1945 BST)

BBC Sport's Jonathan Jurejko: "Throughout the 1990s and early 2000s, this was a regular fixture between two Premier League teams regularly competing for European qualification. But the sides have not met competitively since the 2003-2004 season, which ended in the Whites' relegation to the second tier. Now the Championship outfit, with a 5,000 travelling support behind them, are aiming to cause a shock against a home side intent on winning the competition."

  230. 1858:
    Birmingham v Swansea (1945 BST)

Cup holders Swansea begin the defence of the only major honour in the club's history against 2011 winners Birmingham.

September has been a good month for the Swans, with three away victories, including a 3-0 triumph over Valencia in the Europa League but Birmingham come into the game on the back of a sensational four-goal debut by on-loan striker Jesse Lingard on Saturday.

The Manchester United player will not feature against Swansea, sadly, but Lee Clark's side will still pose a threat to the silky Swans.

    LINE-UPS- Man Utd v Liverpool (1945 BST)

Man Utd: De Gea, Rafael Da Silva, Smalling, Evans, Buttner, Jones, Giggs, Nani, Rooney, Kagawa, Hernandez. Subs: Anderson, Carrick, Welbeck, Fabio Da Silva, Zaha, Amos, Januzaj.

Liverpool: Mignolet, Toure, Skrtel, Sakho, Jose Enrique, Gerrard, Lucas, Henderson, Suarez, Moses, Sturridge. Subs: Brad Jones, Alberto, Aspas, Sterling, Ibe, Kelly, Wisdom.

Referee: Mark Clattenburg (Tyne & Wear)

  233. 1855:

    Tranmere v Stoke (1945 BST)

West Brom v Arsenal (2000 BST)

  236. 1849:
SUAREZ RETURNS- Man Utd v Liverpool (1945 BST)

It's been five months since Luis Suarez was handed his 10-match sentence for sinking his teeth into Branislav Ivanovic's arm. Since then, England have won the Ashes, the Lions also beat Australia and Chris Froome became the second successive British winner of the Tour de France.

As for Liverpool, they've been going along pretty nicely too. Their first game without Suarez was a 6-0 victory at Newcastle and that good form has continued, temporarily taking Brendan Rodgers's side to the summit of the Premier League at the beginning of the current campaign.

Daniel Sturridge has stepped up to the mark in Suarez's absence. Can those two form a deadly strikeforce in the next few months?

  237. 1846:

Luis Suarez starts for Liverpool. Of course he does...

  238. 1845:

    Guess who's back...

    Luis Suarez

It just had to be, didn't it? Luis Suarez's first game back from a 10-game ban is at Old Trafford against Manchester United. It's as if the footballing gods planned it. Whether you love him or loathe him, we're guaranteed box office drama at the Theatre of Dreams tonight. Can the Uruguayan pile on the misery for David Moyes and Co? Let's find out.
