As it happened

  1. 2200:
    AC Milan 2-2 Roma

It promised to be a Christmas cracker of a Monday night's football - and so it proved. Roma looked set to continue Milan's woes as they twice took the lead in the San Siro, but twice Milan came roaring back to grab a point.

That is everything from me tonight, but you do not have long to wait for our next trip to mainland Europe. We will be back at the weekend with two live text commentaries, including Sunday's Milan derby. If you can't wait for that bundle of joy then head over to our European football page throughout the week for all the latest news from the continent. Arrivederci!

  2. 2154:
    AC Milan 2-2 Roma

But, ultimately, the point does little to improve a bleak-looking Serie A table for Milan. It allows them to climb to 10th - a whopping 24 points behind the leaders after only 16 games. That is simply not good enough for a club of AC Milan's stature.

  3. 2150:
    AC Milan 2-2 Roma
    Massimiliano Allegri

So that means second-placed Roma narrowed the gap on Serie A leaders Juventus to five points. Milan boss Massimiliano Allegri will take heart from his team's display ahead of the big derby against Inter on Sunday. That is one he dare not lose.

Italian football expert Paolo Bandini: Very entertaining game between Milan and Roma, but a result that doesn't really satisfy either of them.

  5. 2144:
    FULL-TIME- AC Milan 2-2 Roma

But in the end you've got to say that a draw is just about the right result. Roma dominated at times but were twice pegged back by a Milan side who showed plenty of determination. They just wouldn't be beaten. But the Rossoneri still haven't won at the once fortress-like San Siro in two months, while Roma managed to preserve their unbeaten start to the Serie A season.

  6. 2140:
    FULL-TIME- AC Milan 2-2 Roma

Roma press in the dying moments and almost snatch a winner as Gervinho blasts wide with the last kick of the game. Ooof, I'm taking a sharp intake of breath. That was a mad end to an entertaining match.

  7. 2139:
    AC Milan 2-2 Roma

Golden chance for Milan to ruin Roma's unbeaten record - but Mario Balotelli skews wide when well-placed in the Roma area. Mario cannot believe what he has done. And neither can his team-mates who stand around with their hands on their heads in disbelief.

  8. 2137:
    AC Milan 2-2 Roma

Roma midfielder Kevin Strootman is almost that man. Brazil right-back Maicon gets to the Milan byline and pulls back towards Strootman, only for Dutch international team-mate Nigel De Jong to nip in.

  9. 2135:
INJURY TIME- AC Milan 2-2 Roma

A sorry sight for Milan as full-back Urby Emanuelson - one of their finest performers tonight - crumples in a heap inside his own penalty area. A flurry of fluorescent-jacketed medical staff race on with a stretcher and the Dutchman is replaced by Cristian Zaccardo. Four minutes of added time for someone - anyone - to find a winner.

  10. 2132:
    AC Milan 2-2 Roma

Mario Balotelli stands over the ball. The Italy striker steps up and smashes a fierce effort which swerves and dips towards the Roma goal. Away keeper Morgan De Sanctis must see the ball very late as it powers through his defensive wall and he manages to punch clear.

  11. 2130:
    AC Milan 2-2 Roma

Roma are rocking! The visitors survive a vociferous appeal for handball against Nicolas Burdisso before Milan win a free-kick on the edge of the Roma penalty area....

OptaPaolo: Roma have not conceded more than one goal in any of their previous 23 Serie A games.

  13. 2128:
    AC Milan 2-2 Roma

Still Milan press as Mario Balotelli forces another home corner. Roma keeper Morgan De Sanctis elects to punch clear the set-piece at his near post as the visitors boot the ball away from their net. This match could tip either way now - Milan seem to have found some self-belief. Can they bag a winner?

  14. 2125:
    AC Milan 2-2 Roma

Again, the San Siro finds its collective voice as a fist-pumping Kaka whips the Rossoneri faithful into a frenzy. The Brazilian trots over to take a corner as Milan look to punish Roma again, but the visitors clear and survive - for the time being.

  15. 2123:
GOAL- AC Milan 2-2 Roma - Sulley Muntari (76 mins)
    AC Milan v Roma

Roma will be kicking themselves! The Giallorossi have dominated this game but plucky Milan show their resolve once again to haul themselves back on level terms. Mario Balotelli shows great strength to guide the ball into the path of Sulley Muntari who lashes low inside the near post from 10 yards.

  16. 2122:

Milan boss Massimilliano Allegri cuts a forlorn figure as he stands subdued on the touchline. It could get worse as Roma talisman Francesco Totti lines up a free-kick but he blazes high over the bar.

  17. 2121:
YELLOW CARD- AC Milan 1-2 Roma

Milan tempers flare after Kaka is penalised for foul in the Roma half. The Brazilian sarcastically claps the referee's decision and that is only going to end one way - you're going into the book my son. And his skipper Riccardo Montolivo also sees his name taken seconds later for protesting too much for the official's liking.

James, London, via text: You can't beat Italy's tradition of one-club men... Facchetti, Mazzola, Boniperti, Bergomi, Costacurta, Baresi, Maldini, Del Piero (Sydney doesn't count), Totti, De Rossi...

  19. 2118:
    AC Milan 1-2 Roma

Can't see there being any headlines about Balotelli in the Italian media on Tuesday. Super Mario has been not-so-super tonight. Then, right on cue, he drops deep to collect the ball about 25 yards out from the Roma goal before letting fly. But he cannot strike it sweetly and Roma keeper Morgan De Sanctis watches the ball drift harmlessly wide.

  20. 2116:

Italian football expert James Horncastle: Balotelli's boots tonight covered in the headlines he has made.

    Mario Balotelli
  21. 2113:
    SUBSTITUTION- AC Milan 1-2 Roma

Now it is Milan's turn to make an attacking substitution. Italy forward Alessandro Matri has made little impact since his much-heralded summer arrival from Juventus. Now would be the perfect time to repay some of that €11m transfer fee.

  22. 2110:
    SUBSTITUTION- AC Milan 1-2 Roma

Ah, here is a sight that Milan do not need right now. Francesco Totti emerging from the shadows of the Roma bench to replace opening goalscorer Mattia Destro. Totti has won every game he has played this season. Can Milan end that brilliant run?

OptaPaolo: Kevin Strootman has been directly involved in 10 goals this season (4 scored + 6 assisted), two of which tonight. Decisive.

  24. 2105:
    AC Milan 1-2 Roma

As Milan press, Roma cut them apart on the counter attack. Adem Ljajic races through and plays in Gervinho who looks certain to score as he prepares to pull the trigger about 15 yards out. But wait! Here's Milan full-back Urby Emanuelson to the rescue with a perfectly-timed and perfectly-executed sliding tackle to prevent a third Roma goal.

Loren, Belfast, via text: Uh.....Paulo Maldini? 24 years playing for Milan senior team, lifting three Champions League and two European Cups. Multiple league titles. A true club man, and easily the most successful.

  26. 2103:
    AC Milan 1-2 Roma

What have struggling AC Milan got in their locker? They have already pegged back Roma once tonight and claim a penalty as Mario Balotelli falls to the lush turf inside the Roma penalty area. Roars from the Rossoneri crowds are more hopeful than expectant and referee Rocchi tells the Italy striker to get to his feet.

  27. 2058:
GOAL- AC Milan 1-2 Roma - Kevin Strootman (51 mins)
    AC Milan v Roma

No doubt about that decision against Gabriel, who also receives a yellow card for his troubles. With Francesco Totti sat on the bench, Roma's spot-kick duties fall to Kevin Strootman - and the confident Dutchman makes no mistake by drilling into the bottom right corner.

  28. 2057:
PENALTY TO ROMA- AC Milan 1-1 Roma

Then, it is Roma's turn to charge forward on the attack. Michael Bradley almost puts in Mattia Destro before Milan keeper Gabriel - who has just replaced Christian Abbiati - stupidly charges out and fouls Gervino in the box. Penalty.

  29. 2055:
    AC Milan 1-1 Roma

Even steven in the opening few moments, as it was at the start of the first half. But then Milan midfielder Sulley Muntari lofts a first-time ball over the Roma defence towards Kaka. But the Brazilian can't take the ball in his stride and the swift move breaks down.

  30. 2052:
    KICK-OFF- AC Milan 1-1 Roma

Both sets of players trot out of the tunnel for the second half - and there is a change before Milan restart the game. But it is not Roma skipper Francesco Totti. Instead Milan understudy keeper Gabriel is the man who enters the fray after veteran stopper Christian Abbiati picked up an injury in the first half.

  31. 2048:
    AC Milan 1-1 Roma

Let's have a quick recap for you latecomers shall we?

Roma edged ahead early doors when Mattia Destro slid in to put the second-placed Serie A side ahead from close range.

    AC Milan v Roma

But it is all square as we prepare to watch the second half begin after Milan's Christian Zapata nodded in a 30th-minute equaliser.

    AC Milan v Roma
  32. 2044:
    AC Milan 1-1 Roma

It would be a huge surprise if Francesco Totti did not make an appearance - sooner rather than later - in the second half. Roma have controlled possession more than their Milan rivals but are lacking that bit of attacking genius that Totti can provide.

In tribute to Roma talisman Francesco Totti, we have been discussing football's finest one-club men. Get involved on Twitter using #bbceurofooty or text on 81111.

Andrew Priestley: Franco Baresi played for AC Milan from 1977 to 1997. Arguably Italy's finest defender. He won everything with the Rossoneri.

  34. 2037:
    HALF-TIME- AC Milan 1-1 Roma

So who is the happiest coach at the break? Milan's Massimiliano Allegri or Roma's Rudi Garcia? I reckon Garcia's half-time cuppa will taste marginally sweeter than Allegri's.

  35. 2034:
    HALF-TIME- AC Milan 1-1 Roma

Roma have done most of the first half running and look to creep ahead in stoppage-time. Midfield duo Adem Ljajic and Michael Bradley neatly exchange passes on the edge of the Milan area before the move breaks down as Bradley's thunderous shot smacks straight into team-mate Kevin Strootman. The Dutchman is floored before picking himself up as the half-time whistle sounds.

  36. 2032:
    SUBSTITUTION- AC Milan 1-1 Roma

Roma's Leandro Castan goes down on his haunches again seconds later after that tangle with Kaka. And the Brazilian defender grimaces as he indicates to the Roma staff his night out in the San Siro is over. He is replaced by Argentina defender Nicolas Burdisso.

  37. 2028:
    AC Milan 1-1 Roma

Milan man Kaka is in the thick of the action again as he chases down a long ball into the Roma half. Roma defender Leandro Castan seems to panic as he hears Kaka's footsteps getting louder behind him and he needs no encouragement to go down following the slightest of touches from his Brazilian compatriot. Kaka comes away with the ball but is hauled back for a Roma free-kick.

  38. 2024:
    AC Milan 1-1 Roma
    AC Milan v Roma

That equaliser has raised confidence in the San Siro among the home players and supporters, who have finally found their voice. Kaka has a glimpse of the Roma goal, but horribly miscues an ambitious volley which flies out for a goal kick. See it does happen to even the best of us...

TobyArup: Gerrard is arguably the only one true club man. Why else did he turn down Chelsea and United?

  40. 2019:
    CLOSE!- AC Milan 1-1 Roma

But within seconds Milan almost concede a second and fall behind again. Roma midfielder Michael Bradley squeezes the ball past Milan keeper Christian Abbiati from a tight angle and dramatically cleared off the line by a Milan defender. Bradley is adamant the ball crossed the line, but replays show the officials got the big decision spot on.

  41. 2016:
GOAL- AC Milan 1-1 Roma - Christian Zapata (30 mins)

That should cheer Mario Balotelli up - and it certainly brings a half-smile to the face of under-pressure boss Massimiliano Allegri. Milan are level as Christian Zapata bundles in from close range after a home corner.

  42. 2014:
    AC Milan 0-1 Roma

Roma continue to crank up the pressure as an almighty scowl creases over the face of Milan striker Mario Balotelli. Madcap Mario slices horribly over his own crossbar as he defends a corner and moments later he unhappily gestures after losing possession in the Roma half.

Emil_Arsov: Re one-club men. Ryan Giggs, Paolo Maldini and Steven Gerrard... It's sad that this kind of players will disappear soon, really sad!!!

  44. 2010:
    AC Milan 0-1 Roma

The Roma midfield of Michael Bradley and Kevin Strootman are starting to dominate this game and are controlling the tempo as the visitors enjoy the majority of possession. American international Bradley appeals for a penalty after tumbling under a Nigel de Jong challenge, but it is waved away by the referee.

  45. 2007:
    AC Milan 0-1 Roma

But that set-piece comes to nothing as Milan race back up the other end in search of a foothold on this game. Returning hero Kaka, who has showed glimpses of his best form since returning to the San Siro from Real Madrid, sends a low angled shot trundling wide of the Roma goal.

  46. 2004:
    AC Milan 0-1 Roma
    AC Milan

Tonight is AC Milan's 114th birthday - and the Rossoneri fans on the Curva Sud unfurl this banner in tribute to founder Herbert Kilpin. Roma, it seems, are intent on being party poopers as away midfielder Michael Bradley wins a corner.

  47. 2000:
GOAL- AC Milan 0-1 Roma - Mattia Destro (13 mins)

Cracking start for Roma! The visitors quickly surge down the Milan right where Kevin Strootman finds space to pick out Mattia Destro unmarked in the middle of the home six-yard box. And he makes no mistake with the simplest of tap-ins. Destro has played just 36 first-team minutes this season and has already scored two goals. Decent.

Daniel Etchells: Re greatest one-club men. Given that AC Milan are in action, Paolo Maldini simply has to be mentioned. One of the greatest defenders of all time.

George Dobson: There's only one true one club man in my eyes - Tottenham's Ledley King.

  49. 1956:
    AC Milan 0-0 Roma

Now it is Mario Balotelli's turn to have a slice of the action. The Italy striker is dumped on to the turf about 30 yards from the Roma goal, but dusts himself down to have a pop at goal. He saunters up to the ball before sending a lazy low shot straight into the hands of Roma stopper Morgan De Sanctis.

  50. 1953:
    AC Milan 0-0 Roma

Gervinho has not looked like the same player who frustrated Arsenal fans to the point of annoyance during his spell in North London since being a Roma player. The Ivorian breaks down the Milan right, jinks inside before getting in the first shot at goal. But it is comfortable for Milan keeper Christian Abbiati to gather at his near post.

  51. 1950:
    AC Milan 0-0 Roma

Dutch midfielder Nigel de Jong launches into what can only be described as, well, a Nigel de Jong-style challenge as the match starts at a ferocious tempo. Both side look intent on attacking in the opening stages, ex-Premier League stars Gervinho and Mario Balotelli at the heart of bursts forward for each team.

  52. 1946:
    KICK-OFF- AC Milan 0-0 Roma

For some bizarre reason, tonight's match officials are wearing training bibs - but there are no Mario Balotelli-style problems as they strip off their pre-match threads. Roma striker Gervinho has the honour of prodding forward the ball for the game's first touch - and we are off.

  53. 1943:
AC Milan v Roma (1945 GMT)

Few Roma fans would have expected the Giallorossi to mount a Serie A title challenge this season. After they finished a disappointing sixth last term, the capital club's hierarchy enlisted the help of Lille coach Rudi Garcia to restore their past glories. It was an appointment met with a sea of underwhelming voices. But how he has turned around the opinions of those dissenters. Anyone fancy Roma to maintain their title challenge?

So let's have a Totti-inspired debate about football's greatest one-club men. Send your suggestions using #bbceurofooty on Twitter or via text on 81111.

  55. 1940:
AC Milan v Roma (1945 GMT)

As luck would have it, the great man is not named in the Roma starting XI tonight - thus ruining his grandest of billings. Francesco Totti was expected to return after a recent injury, but is rather surprisingly named on the bench instead. But don't bet against him to have an big influence on this game.

  56. 1938:
    LINE-UPS- AC Milan v Roma (1945 GMT)

AC Milan: Abbiati; De Sciglio, Zapata, Bonera, Emanuelson; Poli, De Jong, Muntari; Montolivo, Kaka, Balotelli.

Subs: Gabriel, Coppola, Zaccardo, Mexes, Cristante, Nocerino, Saponara, Niang, Matri, Pazzini.

AS Roma: De Sanctis; Maicon, Benatia, Castan, Dodò; Bradley, De Rossi, Strootman; Ljajic, Destro, Gervinho.

Substitutes: Lobont, Skorupski, Burdisso, Jedvaj, Torosidis, Romagnoli, Taddei, Ricci, Mazzitelli, Marquinho, Florenzi, Totti.

  57. 1936:
AC Milan v Roma (1945 GMT)

Ciao! Welcome friends to this little slice of Monday football fun. Anyone feeling withdrawal symptoms from a rare night without Premier League action? Don't worry. Two of Serie A's biggest clubs are on hand to provide your round-ball fix.

Despite Roma's refusal to be beaten, they still - quite remarkably - are not top of the Serie A. The Giallorossi are six points adrift of defending champions Juventus after drawing four of their 15 matches. But they can reduce that gap by beating an out-of-sorts Milan side.

  58. 1933:
AC Milan v Roma (1945 GMT)
    Francesco Totti

Of course, it may seem melodramatic to compare Roma skipper Francesco Totti and his comrades to such important historical figures. Yet this is the man who thrives on the nickname 'Gladiator' and has a tattoo etched on to his right shoulder. So let's go with it.

Talisman Totti is the undisputed leader of the current crop of Roman combatants aiming to bring cheer to the Italian capital. The 37-year-old has led from the front as the Giallorossi have emerged undefeated from their opening 15 Serie A battles. And tonight that record goes on the line against another heavyweight - AC Milan.

  59. 1930:

Rome is known across the world as the home of the Gladiator. These hulking beasts - as portrayed by Russell Crowe in the straight-to-the-point-titled 2000 Hollywood blockbuster 'Gladiator' - fought against each other in the name of entertainment for the Roman Empire. Undoubtedly they were the athletic superstars of their day. But move over Spartacus - there are some new sporting heroes in town.
