  1. 22:38:

Manchester City will get the chance to show they have learned their lesson when they take on Chelsea at the Etihad in the FA Cup fifth round in 12 days' time.

That is it for tonight though. Phil McNulty's match report is live on the BBC Sport website with Match of the Day 2 streaming at the top of it for UK readers. I'd make that your next stop.

    Bye for now.

George Jenkins: Hopefully this can mean that Manchester City no longer seem invincible to people. Like what's happened to Manchester United but on a smaller scale.

Former England striker Michael OwenMan City 0-1 Chelsea

"Manchester City should be unbeatable. They are the best team in the league by a mile but I am afraid you can't play at the top level playing 4-4-2.

"You can swat away 95% of teams playing it as most teams are average but what happens when Chelsea or Munich come to town?"

  4. 22:33:

Manuel Pellegrini is fielding questions in the sit-down news conference. His inquisitors are focusing on how his side were outclassed in midfield in general and the performance of Martin Demichelis in particular.

Pellegrini is putting up a stout defence but there will be more tough questions to answer behind the scenes after his side came up a long way short.

  5. 22:27:
MANAGER REACTION- Man City 0-1 Chelsea
    Manuel Pellegrini

Manchester City manager Manuel Pellegrini: "It's just three points, now we have 42 more points to play for.

"Chelsea played very well but we had important players out missing. A lot of things like this affect the result, but even so I don't think we deserved to lose the game.

"Today they had the luck to win.

"The race for the title is the same as it was before the match. For Chelsea it was important they didn't go six points behind us but we stay just two points behind Arsenal."

Charlie from Radley: The enormity of what Chelsea have done this evening cannot be overstated.

  7. 22:24:

Want to see how City stumbled into Jose Mourinho's carefully-laid trap? Do not worry, Match Of The Day 2 is coming up fast with highlights from the Etihad as well as the best bits from the rest of the recent Premier League fixtures.

Former England striker Alan Shearer and ex-Wales forward John Hartson will be dissecting the action, alongside Mark Chapman.

Chris Parker: At £21m Matic is already looking like a bargain.

Toby: People forget Manchester City were missing Nasri, Aguero and Fernandinho, who have been key players this season.

James Turner: Manchester City played well, just couldn't put it away. We are back to where we were a week ago. Jovetic showed glimpses of things to come!

  9. 22:19:
MANAGER REACTION- Man City 0-1 Chelsea
    Jose Mourinho

Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho: "The next pre-season, me and my players will say openly that we are mature, solid from day one and are candidates for the league. This season is about evolution.

"We can [win the title] if they lose it [Manchester City]. Arsenal are working for many, many years for the evolution of their team.

"What we are doing this season is what Arsenal have been building to for years.

"It means nothing for us to come here and park the bus and win 1-0 in a lucky situation. The evolution is more important."

  10. 22:16:
MATCH STATS- Man City 0-1 Chelsea
    Match stats

Chelsea were brutally efficient tonight. A third of the possession, but double the amount of shots on target.

It sounds like they are getting down to partying pretty sharpish as well. Jubilant shouts are coming out of the visiting dressing room.

  11. 22:11:
    Man City 0-1 Chelsea

Jose Mourinho is just facing up to the television cameras and it is humble Jose we are getting tonight. He is playing down their chances of winning the title this season while praising his players to the rafters. "My boys", he calls his side.

  12. 22:09:
    John Terry

Chelsea defender John Terry, speaking to Sky Sports: "We showed a lot of character, and created a lot of chances. We spent a good couple of days working on their strengths and weaknesses - that is typical Jose Mourinho.

"We have a couple of games at home now to kick on. We must win them as we dropped points against West Ham last week."

  13. 22:07:
    Nemanja Matic

Chelsea midfielder Nemanja Matic, speaking to Sky Sports: "It was very hard, because Manchester City are a very good team. We have to continue to play like this.

"The team is younger than when I was first here. We can improve now as the players are young."

Apatel12: Manchester City really missed Aguero, he would've taken those chances. Matic and the Chelsea defence were class though.

Isaac Manda: And I thought Man City were infallible. This is the Premier League indeed!

RRM: Why is everyone picking on Demichelis? He was poor but so were Toure and Silva.

  15. 22:03:
    Man City 0-1 Chelsea

November 2010 was the last time that Manchester City failed to score at home in the league. Back then Jose Mourinho was just settling into his role as Real Madrid manager and Roberto Mancini was still in charge at City.

It is not all bad for City though. They have scored five more goals than any other team has managed after 24 games of a Premier League season.

  16. 21:58:

A bona-fide three-horse race to the finish line? It certainly looks like that. Place your bets, your call is as good as anyone's.

  17. 21:56:
Former Wales midfielder Robbie Savage at Etihad StadiumMan City 0-1 Chelsea

"Man-for-man Chelsea were absolutely brilliant. They closed the ball down and worked for each other.

"Matija Nastasic and Martin Demichelis were two weak links for Manchester City, they were very, very poor."

  18. 21:54:
    FULL-TIME- Man City 0-1 Chelsea

Chest-bumps on the Chelsea bench after Jose Mourinho presses some cursory flesh with Manuel Pellegrini.

  19. 21:54:
    Man City 0-1 Chelsea

That's surely City's lot. Matija Nastasic slashes well wide as the ball drops to him on a tricky, but not impossible, angle.

  20. 21:53:
    SUBSTITUTION- Man City 0-1 Chelsea

Demba Ba replaces Eden Hazard to run the clock down a little further for Chelsea.

  24. 21:51:
    SUBSTITUTION- Man City 0-1 Chelsea

Chelsea suck the life out of the game. Jon Mikel Obi comes on for Willian who sees yellow for taking too long to leave the pitch.

  25. 21:50:
    Man City 0-1 Chelsea

A late corner refuses to drop Yaya Toure's way and as the ball is cleared Chelsea win a throw in and drop into slow motion.

  26. 21:49:
THREE MINUTES OF INJURY TIME- Man City 0-1 Chelsea

Martin Demichelis gives the ball away and Manchester City lose more vital seconds as Chelsea meander upfield. Three minutes of injury time go up on the board.

Former Wales midfielder Robbie Savage at Etihad StadiumMan City 0-1 Chelsea

"That cannot be a clear goalscoring opportunity on the halfway line. Matija Nastasic was the last man, but Oscar had a long way to go."

  28. 21:47:
YELLOW CARD- Man City 0-1 Chelsea

Chelsea want red. Matija Nastasic is caught under a high ball as the ball is cleared from a City corner and appears to grab a handful of Oscar's shirt as the Brazilain spins in behind him. Eden Hazard was in support as well, but Mike Dean chooses to issue only yellow.

  29. 21:44:
FIVE TO GO- Man City 0-1 Chelsea

You would never think you would be able to say this but Manchester City look like they have run out of ideas. Joe Hart searches in vain for some runners upfield as he collects the ball in his own box.

QPR's former Manchester City midfielder Joey BartonMan City 0-1 Chelsea

"Chelsea's Nemanja Matic currently out Toure-ing Yaya Toure. Won't see many do that. Bigger, stronger and quicker than him. Must be 6ft 4in+..."

  31. 21:42:
    SUBSTITUTION- Man City 0-1 Chelsea

Off comes Samuel Eto'o. Into the fray comes Oscar to give Chelsea some fresh legs.

  32. 21:41:
    Man City 0-1 Chelsea

Chelsea have given up the hunt for a second. They are sitting deep with Samuel Eto'o doing a solo shift up front. Manchester City are struggling to pick their way through the massed ranks of defenders.

Ahmet K: Well THIS is the reason why Manchester United should have chosen the 'Special One' rather than the 'Mid-table One'.

Alison Marrs: Bring James Milner on and get up a gear, Manchester City!

Mark Ebsary: Defensive midfielders on show, take note Mr Moyes!

  34. 21:39:
TEN TO GO- Man City 0-1 Chelsea

You know what you get with David Luiz. The Brazilian slashes a shot well over the top from 40 yards as the ball bounces up in front of him. As wild as his hair-do. Ten minutes to go.

  37. 21:37:
    Man City 0-1 Chelsea

This is now the longest that any side have managed to hold out Manchester City in a league game this season.

City's record of scoring in every home league game since November 2010 is a little over 10 minutes away from being broken as well.

  38. 21:35:
    Man City 0-1 Chelsea

Fifteen minutes to go and City are, belatedly, getting close. David Silva sends a shot squirming just wide from Aleksandar Kolarov's cross.

  39. 21:33:
    Man City 0-1 Chelsea

Ohh! Petr Cech, perhaps set for the left foot of Aleksandar Kolarov, has to react smartly to tip over from David Silva's well-hit effort.

  40. 21:32:
    Man City 0-1 Chelsea

Clever from Yaya Toure as he wins a free-kick on the edge of the Chelsea box with a neat drag-back and flop past Willian. David Silva is having a look at the set-piece...

Former Wales midfielder Robbie Savage at Etihad StadiumMan City 0-1 Chelsea

  42. 21:30:
    Man City 0-1 Chelsea

This is ebbing and flowing all over the place. Gary Cahill has to bail out his side in defence as City suddenly surge forward and Stevan Jovetic plays a dangerous ball into the six-yard box. The former Bolton man boots high, hard and clear.

  43. 21:27:
HITS THE WOODWORK- Man City 0-1 Chelsea

Gary Cahill gets up above Yaya Toure and Vincent Kompany at a corner and his header floats towards goal. Everything goes slow motion for a moment before the ball rebounds to safety off the post. City are swaying.

  44. 21:25:
    Man City 0-1 Chelsea

The expected City push has yet to materialise. Chelsea are still enjoying plenty of time in the City half.

Ben Aitkenhead: Manchester City fans and team showing great frustration. Mourinho master class to date.

  46. 21:22:
    Man City 0-1 Chelsea

Aleksandar Kolarov sends a free-kick whistling over the top and there are a few home fans losing patience judging by the grumbles in the stands.

Manuel Pellegrini is directing traffic furiously from the sidelines. The Engineer has some tinkering to do to get his team firing.

  47. 21:19:
    Man City 0-1 Chelsea

As we tick through the hour mark, Chelsea are starting to take their time over free-kicks and stoppages. City tempers meanwhile are starting to fray. Yaya Toure disagrees loudly as Mike Dean blows for a foul on Willian.

Patrick in Newbury: James Milner or even Jack Rodwell need to come on for Martin Demichelis. Can't tackle, positioning is awful and can't close down.

  49. 21:17:
    SUBSTITUTION- Man City 0-1 Chelsea

Stevan Jovetic is on to replace Alvaro Negredo for City. Negredo looks like he is still suffering the effects of a shoulder injury.

  50. 21:16:
    Man City 0-1 Chelsea

While Chelsea's rearguard has been well-protected, Martin Demichelis has left Vincent Kompany and co badly exposed. Kompany gives away a free-kick 25 yards out as he is forced to come out and challenge Ramires.

Janniky: Martin Demichelis is such a liability. Only Manchester City's immense attack has hidden him as a weak link. What does Manuel Pellegrini see in him?

David Luiz and Martin Demechelis compete for the ball
Former Wales midfielder Robbie Savage at Etihad StadiumMan City 0-1 Chelsea

"What a strike from Nemanja Matic. Manchester City put no pressure on him at all.

"He and David Luiz have been superb in the middle of the park. Remember, they are doing this against Yaya Toure."

  53. 21:13:
HITS THE WOODWORK- Man City 0-1 Chelsea

An absolute thunderbolt and only the apex of post and bar saves City. There looks little danger as Nemanja Matic picks up the ball 40 yards from goal, but a swerving shot from the Serbian beats Joe Hart all ends up and leaves the frame of the goal humming.

  54. 21:11:
    CLOSE!- Man City 0-1 Chelsea

Yaya Toure looks City's likeliest way back into the game. The Ivory Coast international drills just wide from Edin Dzeko's neat lay-off to gasps and groans around the Etihad.

Barry: As a neutral - this is an amazing game to watch. It's like watching an under-11s school match. No plan - just attack attack attack. This is what football should be. All that talk of Jose parking the bus seems to be utter nonsense now. 10 - 10 is my prediction.

  57. 21:09:
    Man City 0-1 Chelsea

City are at sixes and sevens at the back as the ball flies back and forth across their penalty box without anyone in a light blue shirt looking even close to clearing. After Eden Hazard over-elaborates with a flick, Willian sees a shot deflected wide.

  58. 21:07:
    Man City 0-1 Chelsea

Edin Dzeko gets above Gary Cahill to head goalwards from Pablo Zabaleta's cross. Just couldn't get over it though and it floats high and wide.

MOTD presenter Gary LinekerMan City 0-1 Chelsea

"Good heavens! Martin Demichelis has come out for the second half. Certainly never appeared in the first."

  60. 21:06:

Stevan Jovetic is already warming up on the sidelines for Manchester City. The Montenegro international was stretching off on the pitch for much of half-time as well.

  61. 21:04:
    KICK-OFF- Man City 0-1 Chelsea

No changes for either side as we get back under way. It was a humdinger of a first half. What awaits?

  62. 21:03:

Manchester City have struggled to pin down Eden Hazard in the first half, as his touch graphic above demonstrates. Jose Mourinho's predictions that he could be up there with Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo have not looked like hype so far.

There is a clear division of labour in the Chelsea line-up. With Nemanja Matic (number 21 in the average touch graphic above) stationed in front of the back four, the quartet of Willian, Eden Hazard, Ramires and Samuel Eto'o have been freed to break at pace when the visitors win the ball.

Saif Rahman: How has Martin Demichelis played for so many big teams? He is the weakest link.

James Sempill: Chelsea have been really tenacious in the first half. Manchester City look shell shocked by the aggression and power of Chelsea so far.

Rabin Acharya: Manchester City can be beaten. The title race is wide open. Absolutely amazing.

  68. 20:50:
Former Wales midfielder Robbie Savage at Etihad StadiumMan City 0-1 Chelsea

"Chelsea have defended well with their four-man defence and two holding midfielders. They have let their four other outfield players just concentrate on attacking.

"Tactically it has been brilliant from Jose Mourinho."

  69. 20:50:
Phil McNulty, BBC Sport Chief Football Writer at the Etihad Stadium

"Manchester City's fans are not used to this - and they do not like it. Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho has produced a brilliant game plan and his one regret will be that his side are not further ahead. They have been cutting Manchester City apart.

"Manchester City manager Manuel Pellegrini has a real puzzle to solve before the start of the second half."

Guy Mowbray, BBC Match of the Day commentator at the Etihad StadiumMan City 0-1 Chelsea

"It's Jose Mourinho's Blues who are winning the battle so far. The goal came after Manchester City failed to deal with a Chelsea attack, which has been the story of the game time and again."

  71. 20:48:
    HALF-TIME- Man City 0-1 Chelsea

Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho marches down the tunnel to the away dressing room. This is shaping up nicely for his side.

  72. 20:47:
    Man City 0-1 Chelsea

City are on the rack here. Vincent Kompany looks like a pensioner caught in a one-way system, looking one way and another in confusion as a mix-up with Martin Demichelis almost lets in Samuel Eto'o.

How this game has changed since the opening 10 minutes.

Former Wales midfielder Robbie Savage at Etihad Stadium

"Pablo Zabaleta was torn apart by Eden Hazard from a standing start. You do not see him getting beaten that easily very often.

"It was great technique from Samuel Eto'o by using his side foot. This is one of the best performances I have seen from an away side at Etihad Stadium - they should be several goals up."

HITS THE WOODWORK- Man City 0-1 Chelsea

So close to a second for Chelsea. Eden Hazard roasts Pablo Zabaleta down the left, leaving the City full-back choking on fumes. His cross is just in front of Willian in the middle and Samuel Eto'o can only find the crossbar with a rising shot from a tight angle.

  75. 20:43:
    Man City 0-1 Chelsea

Bodies on the line from Chelsea. Great defensive commitment from Ramires, who comes flying out to put off Edin Dzeko on the edge of the box. The City striker is spooked and sends his shot well over.

Nemanja Matic leaves his foot in on Yaya Toure. It is a sly one, but Mike Dean spots it and the former Benfica man has his name taken.

  79. 20:39:
    Man City 0-1 Chelsea

City's senses were scrambled in the immediate aftermath of the goal, but they look like they are recovering their attacking stride, David Silva and Alvaro Negredo almost combine to set free Edin Dzeko, before the Bosnian heads over from the subsequent corner.

  80. 20:37:
YELLOW CARD- Man City 0-1 Chelsea

Martin Demichelis joins Branislav Ivanovic in Mike Dean's little black book as he chops down the dangerous Eden Hazard in midfield. A silly part of the pitch to pick up a needless booking.

    CLOSE!- Man City 0-0 Chelsea
Yaya Toure slides for the ball

Agonising for Manchester City. Aleksandar Kolarov wraps his left peg around a superb skimming cross which Yaya Toure cannot quite reach with one of those telescopic legs. It was a a matter of inches.

Chelsea were cut to ribbons by the pace of the attack though with City runners coming at them from all angles.

Former Wales midfielder Robbie Savage at Etihad StadiumMan City 0-0 Chelsea

"Chelsea are breaking with pace and in numbers. They look far more intent on scoring a goal than they did at Arsenal."

  104. 20:11:
    Man City 0-0 Chelsea

The Mourinho masterplan almost pays off in the first 10 minutes.

City are caught over-committing to attack as the Blues break at pace and, with Matija Nastasic inexplicably sliding in when Vincent Kompany seemed to have got the situation under control, it took a timely intervention from Martin Demichelis to turn the ball behind for a corner.

Vincent Kompany rattles straight through Samuel Eto'o. He is a little lucky to escape yellow. The hosts' blood is up for this one.

  106. 20:06:
Former Wales midfielder Robbie Savage at Etihad StadiumMan City 0-0 Chelsea

"It is almost a 4-2-3-1 formation for Chelsea, with Ramires lining up with Eden Hazard and Willian behind Samuel Eto'o. Nemanja Matic and David Luiz are sitting very deep."

    Man City 0-0 Chelsea

Gary Cahill plays the ball straight into touch as he comes under pressure from City's high press. Chelsea are not getting a taste of the leather and Jose Mourinho is taking copious notes in the dug-out.

Fabious: A certain coach was mocking Rafa Benitez for using defenders as midfielders not so long ago.

  109. 20:04:
    Man City 0-0 Chelsea

Alvaro Negredo muscles his way down the inside left channel, past Branislav Ivanovic, before thumping over the top as the angle narrowed. Bright start for City and the tone seems to have been set.

"Petr Cech rushed out like Joe Hart did at the end of the reverse game at Stamford Bridge. He had no need to come out."

  111. 20:02:
    Man City 0-0 Chelsea

Where is that defensive stability we had been promised? Jesus Navas chases a nothing ball up the middle and a mix-up between Petr Cech and Gary Cahill in the Chelsea defence almost lets in the Spaniard.

Cech eventually boots high and clear before berating everyone within earshot.

Shaun, a Chelsea fan: Jose Mourinho asked why fans criticised Chelsea when we had the money and have not criticised Manchester City. It is because it is all to do with the style of play. We welcomed the trophies but we knew we weren't always as fluid as Arsenal. City have the money but also play with style. Sadly, we still get the results but with large periods of quite boring play.

Former Wales midfielder Robbie Savage at Etihad Stadium

"Looking at the two benches, you would say Chelsea's is slightly stronger than Manchester City's."

  117. 19:54:
    Manuel Pellegrini and Jose Mourinho

There is a a bit of previous between Manuel Pellegrini and Jose Mourinho.

Mourinho celebrated Fernando Torres's winner in the reverse fixture in October by diving into the crowd behind the away dug-out. He says he was looking for his son who has a season ticket in that section of Stamford Bridge. What he certainly did was annoy Manuel Pellegrini.

During his time in charge of Real Madrid, Mourinho pointed out that he would never have to take a job at Malaga like Pellegrini, his predecessor at the Bernabeu, had done upon leaving the Spanish capital.

Former England striker Alan Shearer on BBC Radio 5 live

"I like the way Alvaro Negredo has settled in for Manchester City. Saying that, it must be an absolute dream to play in that team as balls come into the box from all angles."

Statisticians Opta: 16 - Alvaro Negredo has scored 16 goals in his last 13 competitive appearances at the Etihad Stadium.

Devon Ainley: Last night we saw a strong Seattle Seahawks defence triumph against a rampant Denver Broncos offence in the Super Bowl - will Chelsea do the same against Manchester City?

Paul Moore: Jose Mourinho's mind games won't work with Manuel Pellegrini. He is way too shrewd to fall for it! City win tonight!

Paddy Emmerson: Am I the only one bored by Mourinho's constant hypocritical moaning? The Special One? More like The Tedious One.

  121. 19:46:
    Frank Lampard and Mesut Ozil

In away trips to Arsenal and Manchester United this season, Chelsea have played out two of the dourest, dreariest 0-0 draws imaginable.

Is it possible to tie this Manchester City team in knots though? The last time City failed to score in a home league game was in November 2010.

Nobody does back-to-the wall rearguard actions like Jose Mourinho though. The way his Inter Milan side neutralised Barcelona en route to the Champions League in 2010 was boring at its most brilliant.

James in Leicester: Anyone who thinks Ramires is a holding midfielder has only seen him play this season. Expect to see him playing in Oscar's position, only far more capable of winning the ball.

Rory in Tonbridge: Pretty damning indictment of Jack Rodwell for Pellegrini to pick an old, slow centre-back ahead of him in midfield.

Bertie Watson: Mourinho is more parking the mini van rather than the bus.

John Roberts: If anyone can then it's Chelsea. But it'll probably be a draw.

Kevin Dowling: It is like the Super Bowl all over again... And look what happened there - 3-1 Chelsea.

Dave Sansom: I don't understand all this negativity around Chelsea's line-up. I'm excited to see Luiz and Ramires in more box-to-box roles. I think Jose's got it spot on.

  124. 19:43:
    Attack v defence

As Guy Mowbray points out, it is the Premier League's most prolific attack against the top-flight's meanest defence tonight.

City have racked up 68 goals so far, at an average of very nearly three a game. Chelsea have conceded just 20.

Mourinho may have laid into West Ham's "19th-century football" in the wake of Saturday's draw but it looks as if the Portuguese has come over all Victorian himself and parked at least a penny farthing tonight.

  125. 19:41:
Guy Mowbray, BBC Match of the Day commentator at the Etihad Stadium

"It could be explosive. It's bound to be fascinating.

"Having been frustrated by West Ham's '19th-century football', Jose Mourinho now has to come up with a plan to counter football from another planet.

"Mourinho knows that his Chelsea team CAN beat City following October's meeting, and that he knows how to beat a Pellegrini side.

"A different set of goalposts now perhaps, but Mourinho's Real Madrid mastered Manuel's Malaga in six of eight meetings over the last three seasons.

"But how will he stop the Premier League's most potent attack?"

  126. 19:37:
    Juan Mata at Manchester United

After Chelsea announced a loss of nearly £50m in December, Jose Mourinho found himself in the unusual position of having to sell before he could buy in the January transfer window.

The departures of Juan Mata to Manchester United and Kevin de Bruyne to Wolfsburg brought in around £53m.

Deals to sign Benfica's Nemanja Matic, Basel's Mohamed Salah and St Etienne's Kurt Zouma came in at an approximate total of £44m.

Good business? A critic might suggest that the Blues could have done with the invention of Mata off the bench in their 0-0 draw with West Ham last time out... If they have to chase the game today, that lobby might gather momentum.

  127. 19:35:
    Manuel speaks

Manchester City manager Manuel Pellegrini, speaking to Sky Sports: "The plan is to continue playing the way we have been all season. We know how dangerous Chelsea are on the counter-attack and we will try to be a balanced team. I can't tell you what Chelsea will do, it's just important we continue doing what we have been doing."

Kevin Smith: Hey Jose, that's no ordinary bus - that's a Routemaster Borisbus of a starting 11.

Ashtag: The Premier League is meant to be the best attacking league in the world and then you have Chelsea playing seven defensive players.

Miracle Roch: Fernandinho missing is the first sign of things going awry for Manchester City.

  129. 19:33:
Phil McNulty, BBC Sport Chief Football Writer at the Etihad Stadium

"Fernandinho has been one of the more understated members of Manchester City's array of talent but the Brazilian has been very effective alongside Yaya Toure in midfield so he will be missed tonight. It gives Matija Nastasic a chance in central defence.

"Jose Mourinho has an effective shield in midfield with Nemanja Matic, David Luiz and Ramires but there is still plenty of flair in the shape of Willian and Eden Hazard in support of Samuel Eto'o."

QPR's former Manchester City midfielder Joey Barton

"Fernandinho being out is a huge loss for City. I fancy Chelsea to get something tonight."

  131. 19:32:
manchester city lose to chelsea in October

Talking of defensive ricks, the reverse fixture at Stamford Bridge in October was decided when Joe Hart's rush from goal caught Matija Nastasic by surprise to allow Fernando Torres to score a late winner.

Manchester City have won the last four meetings against Chelsea at the Etihad though, stretching back to the 2008-09 season.

Tom in Manchester: Martin Demichelis playing in a Pirlo-esque role today. Should make for a cracking game!

With Demichelis and David Luiz afforded a chance to strut their stuff in the middle of the park there is less chance of a Kolo Toure-style rick being dropped at the back.

  133. 19:25:

Robbie Savage correctly called Jose Mourinho's tactics yesterday, predicting he would sacrifice one of Willian, Oscar and Eden Hazard for extra midfield solidity.

    So will it work?

"I am not sure. City are just awesome at the moment," he wrote on the BBC Sport website.

"Mourinho's main aim will be to make things really difficult for City but, with the way Pellegrini's men are playing, I am going to back City to win it."

  134. 19:20:

Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho, speaking to Sky Sports, insists he will not be "parking the bus": "The team I have selected is a team to defend when they have the ball and to attack when we have the ball.

"They are a strong team. Our game plan is to be strong defensively but to be a threat to the opponent. We want to win but we know that our opponent will have a lot of the ball and when they have it they are the most dangerous team in the country."

Mark Rookes: So three holding midfielders for Chelsea, is he parking the bus or a coach?

Edmund Emiowei: Jose Mourinho's made a rod for his own back with those West Ham comments. I think he's better off losing than a 0-0 draw!

Sean: Upon seeing the Manchester City team, Chelsea should just go home.

  136. 19:18:

The stadium announcer has explained to the early arrivers that Fernandinho is absent for Manchester City after picking up an injury in the win over Tottenham.

The Brazilian can always follow the game on BBC Manchester if he is not down to watch in person. He has been apparently been listening in to improve his English.

Brazil to Manchester via Ukraine - we could be in for one of the all time great accent mash-ups. Think Jan Molby gone global.

Former Wales midfielder Robbie Savage at Etihad Stadium

"Martin Demichelis at centre-back has been poor for Manchester City, but he has looked better in defensive midfield in the last few games.

"I hope it is not a boring game, such as the ones Chelsea have played at Manchester United and Arsenal."

Listen to build-up to Manchester City v Chelsea on BBC Radio 5 live now.

  138. 19:13:

I'm not going to lie people, it doesn't look like Chelsea have come here to go toe-to-toe in an all-attacking scrap. In Ramires, Nemanja Matic and David Luiz, Jose Mourinho has put up a formidable bank of three in front of their defence.

  139. 19:10:

Chelsea start with Samuel Eto'o on his own up front and Eden Hazard and Willian behind him. Oscar drops out with David Luiz, Ramires and Nemanja Matic as a midfield three.

Chelsea starting XI: Cech; Ivanovic, Cahill, Terry (c), Azpilicueta; David Luiz, Matic; Ramires, Willian, Hazard; Eto'o.

  140. 19:07:

Alvaro Negredo starts in place of the injured Sergio Aguero while Martin Demichelis starts as midfield anchorman in place of Fernandinho.

Man City starting XI: Hart, Zabaleta, Kompany (c), Nastasic, Kolarov, Navas, Demichelis, Toure, Silva, Dzeko, Negredo

  141. 19:03:

So where might tonight's match be won?

With Chelsea's defence kept busy by City's attacking quartet, it may come down to how well the ageing Frank Lampard and John Mikel Obi combine to keep tabs on the marauding runs of Yaya Toure.

As former Chelsea man Pat Nevin outlines elsewhere on the BBC Sport website, Toure has added a fresh attacking edge to his play this season with pinpoint free-kicks and sliderule through-balls.

  142. 19:00:

Chelsea FC on Twitter: Gary Cahill spoke on arrival at the Etihad: "It's going to be a tough test for us today but it's one we are looking forward to."

Before legging it to the changing rooms presumably. An hour is more than enough for a quick bit of a high-knees and "let's get at 'em" in my limited playing experience.

A titanic 90 minutes is less than 90 minutes away.

  150. 18:35:
    League table

While the arguments over the balance sheet will rumble all the way through to the summer, the league table is the document that matters tonight.

Victory for City will take them back to the top of the league. A Chelsea win puts them right into the title mix.

Arsenal will probably most welcome a draw.

  151. 18:30:
    Jose Mourinho

Eventually even the nouveau riche become establishment old money.

In Jose Mourinho's first spell in charge of Chelsea circa 2004, his side surfed their way to successive Premier League titles on a tidal wave of spending.

Didier Drogba, Michael Essien, Ricardo Carvalho and Shaun Wright-Phillips all arrived for fees around and about £20m. Silverware duly followed.

Fast forward 10 years though and Jose isn't happy with Manchester City's attempt to do something similar.

He says it is "impossible" to compete with City in the transfer market unless financial fair play rules are enforced.

Never mind the millions though, tonight we find out if his side can still beat City on the pitch.
