As it happened

  1. 21:59:

What an afternoon and evening of European football that has been. We have had stunning goals, thunderous tackles, fisticuffs on the sidelines and some quality football.

In the early match, Real Madrid stayed top of La Liga with a hard-fought 2-2 draw with city rivals Atletico. It took a late equaliser from Cristiano Ronaldo to earn the point though. Barcelona hit back in the evening game, with a 4-1 win over Almeria moving them a point behind Real.

Elsewhere, Juventus march on towards the Serie A title with a 2-0 win at AC Milan while PSG beat Marseille 2-0 to move closer towards the Ligue 1 title.

That is it from us for the evening. Thanks for your company.

  2. 21:52:
French Ligue 1FULL-TIME- PSG 2-0 Marseille

That is that. An ultimately comfortable win for PSG as they move eight points clear at the top of Ligue 1. Good job Barcelona won because Europe's other top leagues are fast becoming sewn up.

  3. 21:51:
    Spanish La LigaBarcelona 4-1 Almeria
  4. 21:49:
Spanish La LigaFULL-TIME- Barcelona 4-1 Almeria

You get the feeling Barcelona could have hit 10 this evening if they had been in top gear for 90 minutes. As it is though, Gerardo Martino's men are more than good enough to return to second place in La Liga - just one point behind leaders Real Madrid.

The title race is very much on.

  5. 21:44:
Spanish La LigaGOAL- Barcelona 4-1 Almeria - Xavi (89 mins)

The scoreline is suddenly looking more like it should be. This time, Xavi collects the ball 20 yards from goal and he bends a shot into the top corner.

Real Madrid watch out, Barcelona are coming.

  6. 21:44:
    Spanish La LigaBarcelona 3-1 Almeria

Neymar is replaced by Cristian Tello to a decent ovation from the Nou Camp. Probably more decent than he deserves as the Brazilian has been very wasteful this evening.

  7. 21:41:
Italian Serie AFULL-TIME- AC Milan 0-2 Juventus

All over at the San Siro as Juventus come away with an important victory that moves them 11 points clear of second-place Roma. The Old Lady is relentless.

  8. 21:39:
French Ligue 1GOAL- PSG 2-0 Marseille - Edinson Cavani (79 mins)

A perfect way to announce your return from injury as Edinson Cavani powers in a header from Gregory van der Wiel's lofted pass.

  9. 21:39:
Spanish La LigaGOAL- Barcelona 3-1 Almeria - Carles Puyol (83 mins)

    At last. Game over.

Lionel Messi rises above the Almeria defence to head the ball onto the bar and Carles Puyol is on hand to stab home the rebound from close range for his first league goal of the campaign.

They have made hard work of it, but Barcelona are moving to within a point of La Liga leaders Real Madrid.

  10. 21:33:
    Spanish La LigaBarcelona 2-1 Almeria

Fifteen minutes left at the Nou Camp as Barcelona continue to labour towards victory. It has to be said, Almeria have shown very little attacking intent but - I know I keep saying it - with just one goal the difference, anything can happen. Barcelona should be killing teams like Almeria off.

  11. 21:31:
    French Ligue 1PSG 1-0 Marseille

Good news for PSG as their record signing Edinson Cavani comes on to make his first appearance in a month. The Uruguayan has been out with a thigh injury he picked up at the end of January.

  12. 21:29:
Italian Serie AAC Milan 0-2 Juventus

The intensity has almost completely left this game with a number of Milan fans out of their seats and making a beeline for the exits. It is game over as far as they are concerned, but Urby Emanuelson tries to get the home side back into it with a rasping strike that Gianluigi Buffon again does well to keep out.

Edward Pace: I know they are still clearly class, but didn't Barcelona smash these sort of teams a few years ago? Just saying.

Javier Quansah: What is it with 30-yard strikes today? First Yaya Toure, now Tevez. Who is next?

Surely our old mate Zlatan will oblige over in Paris? He loves a cheeky 30-yarder.

  15. 21:26:
    Spanish La LigaBarcelona 2-1 Almeria
    Lionel Messi

So as we enter the last 20 minutes, there is still work to be done for Barcelona. They should be comfortably ahead by now but the longer this goes on, the more their La Liga title rivals, Real Madrid and Atletico Madrid, will believe there could yet be an upset.

  16. 21:24:
    French Ligue 1PSG 1-0 Marseille

Marseille are enjoying a bit of possession at the moment but are not really troubling the PSG defence. The home side seem quite content to sit back and then try and hit the visitors on the break.

  17. 21:23:
    Spanish La LigaBarcelona 2-1 Almeria

Neymar buries his face in his shirt and so he should.

The Brazilian fluffs his lines terribly as the ball finds him unmarked just yards from goal. His side-footed finish goes across the face of goal when it looks easy to fire towards the net.

  18. 21:21:
    Spanish La LigaBarcelona 2-1 Almeria

Barcelona are almost playing as though they think it is already job done. There is a lack of urgency, a lack of real forward intent and a lack of intensity. Almeria could yet make them pay.

  19. 21:20:
    Spanish La LigaBarcelona 2-1 Almeria

A warning for Barcelona that this game is still far from over.

Almeria keep the ball for a few minutes before advancing down Barcelona's right. The ball finds its way to Aleix Vidal and his powerful strike goes straight into the midriff of goalkeeper Victor Valdes.

    Almeria are growing in confidence.

  20. 21:13:
Italian Serie AGOAL- AC Milan 0-2 Juventus - Carlos Tevez (67 mins)
    Carlos Tevez

Wow. Just wow. Milan will feel hard done by that this game is beyond them, but they surely have to doff their cap to a superb goal by Carlos Tevez. The former Manchester City striker picks the ball up about 35 yards from goal, touches the ball on a bit before rifling an unstoppable shot into the net off the underside of the crossbar.

  21. 21:13:
    Spanish La LigaBarcelona 2-1 Almeria
    Dani Alves

Barcelona still can't find that breakthrough they are looking for. There is plenty of neat passing in the final third but all too often the final product is tame. This time, Cesc Fabregas's low daisy-cutter is easy for Esteban in the Almeria goal.

It is almost as though things are too easy for Barcelona at the moment.

Mathias Ekohinmi: Talking about class...Clarence Seedorf is not the kind of coach for a big club like AC Milan.

  23. 21:09:
French Ligue 1GOAL- PSG 1-0 Marseille - Maxwell (50 mins)

PSG finally make the breakthrough as Zlatan Ibrahimovic slips a clever ball through for Maxwell to run clear on goal and the defender hits a low effort into the net.

  24. 21:09:
    Greek Superleague

Olympiakos's hopes of going the entire season unbeaten in the Greek Super League end as they are unexpectedly beaten 3-0 by Panathinaikos in the Athens derby.

As reported earlier, Olympiakos striker Michael Olaitan had to be taken to hospital after he collapsed midway through the first half.

The 21-year-old Nigerian regained consciousness with the help of doctors and was immediately admitted to the nearby Metropolitan hospital to undergo tests.

  25. 21:07:
Spanish La LigaCLOSE!- Barcelona 2-1 Almeria

Neymar looks as though he is about to extend Barcelona's lead but his finish doesn't match the quality build-up play.

Xavi's sublime defence-splitting pass sends the Brazil forward through on goal but, after a decent first touch, he sends a tame shot straight at goalkeeper Esteban. He should be doing better from there.

  26. 21:05:
French Ligue 1KICK-OFF- PSG 0-0 Marseille

Back under way over in Paris.

  27. 21:02:
Spanish La LigaKICK-OFF- Barcelona 2-1 Almeria

Barcelona have won 26 of their last 27 home matches in La Liga and you would expect them to go on and add to those victories tonight.

But, for as long as the score stays like this, Almeria will believe they have a little bit of a sniff.

  28. 21:00:
Italian Serie AAC Milan 0-1 Juventus

Andrea Poli comes off the worse from a nasty clash of heads when he challenges for a cross in the Juventus area. He cannot continue and is taken off on a stretcher with Riccardo Saponara taking his place.

  29. 20:58:
Italian Serie AAC Milan 0-1 Juventus

Good start to the second half as Carlos Tevez drops a shoulder to open up space for himself inside the area. He then drills a low effort aimed at the far post, but Christian Abbiati gets down well to make the save.

Matt Donnelly: Say what you want about the standard of lesser teams in Spain but it must be a privilege watching Messi and Ronaldo every week.

  31. 20:52:
    Spanish La LigaBarcelona 2-1 Almeria
    Barcelona possession

A quick glance at the first-half stats show Barcelona's dominance, having enjoyed 76% of possession.

  32. 20:51:
Italian Serie AKICK-OFF- AC Milan 0-1 Juventus

Clarence Seedorf is all smiles as he strolls out of the tunnel and back to the dugout. He will surely be encouraged by Milan's first-half display, but can they lift themselves to get back into the game? Time to find out as Carlos Tevez gets the second half under way.

  33. 20:49:
French Ligue 1HALF-TIME- PSG 0-0 Marseille

Half a chance for PSG just before the break as Ezequiel Lavezzi clips a cross into the area for Zlatan Ibrahimovic, who has a free header but uncharacteristically heads wide. The half time whistle blows soon after.

  34. 20:45:
Spanish La LigaHALF-TIME- Barcelona 2-1 Almeria
    Barcelona's Lionel Messi

I'm not quite sure how there is just one goal between the sides in this game at the break. Barcelona have dominated the play from the outset but some bad finishing and a disastrous moment defensively means Almeria are somehow still in this match.

  35. 20:44:
    Spanish La LigaBarcelona 2-1 Almeria

Lionel Messi diverts Alexis Sanchez's cross over the bar as he stretches for the ball. Neymar is standing behind him and frustrated his team-mate didn't leave it. It is hard to stay angry with Messi for long though as he turns his initial protests into a pat on the back for him.

  36. 20:42:
    Spanish La LigaBarcelona 2-1 Almeria

A half chance for Almeria as goal scorer Angel Trujillo takes a cross down on his chest but the ball runs away from him and goalkeeper Victor Valdes is able to smother.

There are less than five minutes to go before the break and, after a bit of a battering for 20 minutes, Almeria will be fairly happy with how things are going.

Rishi Verma: Our (Juve's) name is on the title after surviving a first half-pummelling like that, yet score on a rare counter-attack!

  38. 20:40:
    French Ligue 1PSG 0-0 Marseille

A good chance for Marseille midway through the first half against PSG as Mathieu Valbuena is sent on his way by Florian Thauvin and he curls an effort goalwards that Salvatore Sirigu does well to keep out. Andre-Pierre Gignac then fails to get a proper connection with the rebound and the chance passes.

  39. 20:38:
Spanish La LigaCLOSE!- Barcelona 2-1 Almeria

Almost a wonderful goal. Alexis Sanchex does brilliantly to flick the ball back into Lionel Messi's path with the back of his head but, this time, the Argentine is just off radar as his diving header goes inches wide of the post.

  40. 20:36:
    Spanish La LigaBarcelona 2-1 Almeria
    Barcelona's Neymar

A first time effort from Neymar flies just wide of the post from inside the penalty area. Barcelona look capable of more goals this evening.

But, as it stands, the hosts will be a little anxious as they know one lapse in concentration and Almeria could be back all square.

  41. 20:34:
Italian Serie AHALF-TIME- AC Milan 0-1 Juventus
    Clarence Seedorf

Clarence Seedorf will need to be at his half-time team talking best to rally his Milan players after that late suckerpunch. The home side were the better side, brilliant at times, but Gianluigi Buffon's goalkeeping and Fernando Llorente's smart finish proves the difference.

  42. 20:32:
Italian Serie AGOAL- AC Milan 0-1 Juventus - Fernando Llorente (44 mins)

Harsh. Very harsh on Milan as Juventus snatch the lead just before the break. Carlos Tevez starts the move as he plays a fine weighted pass for Stephan Lichtsteiner who races to the by-line and cuts the ball across goal and towards the far post, where Fernando Llorente pokes in.

  43. 20:31:
Italian Serie AAC Milan 0-0 Juventus

Adel Taarabt is running the show at the moment for Milan as he again drives forward before picking out Kaka on the left. He smacks a powerful effort towards the far corner but Gianluigi Buffon is again equal to the effort as he thumps clear. Milan much the better side at the moment.

Ayo Obit: A weekend is never complete until you see a moment of magic from Lionel Messi.

  45. 20:28:
Spanish La LigaGOAL- Barcelona 2-1 Almeria - Angel Trujillo (27 mins)

Just when Barcelona looked as though they could put their feet up and enjoy the rest of the evening, some calamitous defending gives their visitors a lifeline.

An Almeria corner is horribly missed by goalkeeper Víctor Valdes and the unmarked Angel Trujillo heads home into an empty net. That wasn't in the script.

  46. 20:24:
Spanish La LigaGOAL- Barcelona 2-0 Almeria - Lionel Messi (24 mins)
    Lionel Messi

Wow, what a strike. Lionel Messi lines up a free-kick 25-yards out from goal, takes a small run up and then bends the ball into the top corner. Absolutely brilliant.

The Argentine has now scored in six consecutive matches for Barcelona.

  47. 20:23:
    French Ligue 1PSG 0-0 Marseille

Lucas Moura almost singlehandedly scores what would have been arguably one of the goals of the season as he picks the ball up in his own half, wriggles his way past four players and shoots over goalkeeper Steve Mandanda. However, Rod Fanni clears off line to deny Moura a moment of glory.

Steve Howes: Saw the Madrid derby earlier, occasionally some good football broke out between the acting. Liga will never be the top league.

  49. 20:21:
    Spanish La LigaBarcelona 1-0 Almeria
    Gerardo Martino

Barcelona manager Gerardo Martino is having to watch the action from the stands as he serves a one-match ban for being sent off against Real Sociedad last weekend. But he will be fairly happy with what he is seeing so far, as Lionel Messi almost doubles the lead with a low shot that is saved by Esteban.

  50. 20:16:
    Spanish La LigaBarcelona 1-0 Almeria

A slight scare for Barcelona as Almeria's Aleix Vidal sprints away from Dani Alves, only to be tripped by the Brazil defender. The visitors insist the foul was committed inside the penalty area but replays show it was just outside.

The free-kick comes to nothing as a shot is smashed into the wall.

  51. 20:15:
Italian Serie AGREAT SAVE!- AC Milan 0-0 Juventus

Oh my! This is unbelievable stuff! Now it is Gianluigi Buffon's turn to pull off some heroic goalkeeping as he reacts instinctively to jab away Kaka's low shot with his foot. The Brazilian gets a second bite of the cherry but this time his curled effort is hacked off the line by Leonardo Bonucci. Kaka has his hands on his head and is wide eyed in disbelief. This is a great game!

  52. 20:10:
Italian Serie AGREAT SAVE!- AC Milan 0-0 Juventus
    Carlos Tevez

Fantastic start to this game at the San Siro as both sides have a chance each in the space of minutes. Urby Emanuelson shoots wide for the home side but Milan keeper Christian Abbiati produces the moment of the match so far as he somehow produces a point-blank save to deny Carlos Tevez with his feet.

  53. 20:09:
Spanish La LigaGOAL- Barcelona 1-0 Almeria - Alexis Sanchez (9 mins)
    Alexis Sanchez

Barcelona look as though they are in the mood for goals this evening as they break Almeria down all too easily. Cesc Fabregas's low strike is parried into the path of Alexis Sanchez by goalkeeper Esteban, and the striker has no problems in tapping the loose ball into the empty net.

Sanchez is Barcelona's top scorer in La Liga with 16 goals for the season.

Kevin Christie: Just home from the Calderon. Atletico deserved to win and were robbed by shocking refereeing. Pepe is an absolute disgrace.

Atletico Madrid and Real Madrid played out a 2-2 draw in La Liga earlier this afternoon.

  55. 20:07:
Spanish La LigaGREAT SAVE!- Barcelona 0-0 Almeria
    Barcelona v Almeria

Sure enough, Barcelona almost take the lead. Xavi's diagonal pass finds Dani Alves but his shot is well saved by goalkeeper Esteban. Good save.

  56. 20:05:
    Spanish La LigaBarcelona 0-0 Almeria

A typically patient start from the hosts as they pass the ball around and wait for an opening. Almeria already look content to sit deep and defend what they have got. It could be a long night for them.

  57. 20:04:
    French Ligue 1PSG 0-0 Marseille

Great atmosphere in Paris as the game gets under way. Can PSG extend their lead at the top of Ligue 1? We will find out in the next 90 minutes.

  60. 19:55:
Italian Serie AAC Milan 0-0 Juventus

Adel Taarabt is looking lively in these early stages and he is the first to threaten when he scampers goalwards before smashing a shot that warms the hands of Juventus keeper Gianluigi Buffon. Good start by the hosts.

  62. 19:48:
Italian Serie AKICK-OFF- AC Milan 0-0 Juventus

The first of our main games this evening is under way as Milan kick things off against Juventus.

This would often be a clash involving two sides in the Scudetto race in previous years but that is not the case this time with Milan way off the pace. That matters not to Juventus, though, who have a third successive title very much in their sights...

  63. 19:47:
    Match abandoned in Poland

Disturbing scenes in Poland where league leaders Legia Warsaw, who are managed by former Blackburn boss Henning Berg, saw their home game with Jagiellonia Białystok abandoned due to fighting between fans.

A statement on Legia's official website reads: "In the stands there were incidents involving spectators. The police entered and the decision was communicated, with information about the need to leave the stadium."

The game was goalless at half-time when the game was abandoned.

  64. 19:45:
French Ligue 1Zlatan says...- Paris St-German v Marseille (20:00 GMT)

I don't know about you but I always enjoy having a look at what pearls of third-person wisdom Zlatan Ibrahimovic has shared via his Twitter account. Ahead of Paris St-Germain's game against Marseille, Zlatan muses: "Big games are not decided by those who play it safe. #DaretoZlatan." Wise words once again.

After Monaco's surprise defeat on Sunday, PSG can take another big step to claiming the Ligue title with a win against Marseille. They are five points clear, with a game in hand.

  65. 19:43:
Spanish La LigaRecord-breaker- Barcelona v Almeria (20:00 GMT)
    Lionel Messi

Talking about records, Messi is no stranger to re-writing the history books. Here are just some of the records he has already broken at Barcelona:

    • Most goals in a calendar year: 91
    • Most goals in a season: 68
    • Most goals in a La Liga season: 50
    • Most La Liga hat-tricks in a season: 8
    • Barcelona's top goal scorer in all official competitions: 339
  66. 19:34:
Spanish La LigaMessi the master- Barcelona v Almeria (20:00 GMT)

When you have Lionel Messi in your ranks, why wouldn't you fancy your chances? The Argentine is now the third highest goal scorer in La Liga history.

His 229 La Liga goals have come in just 264 games and he now has Telmo Zarra (251) and Hugo Sanchez (234) in his sights. Surely it won't be too long before Messi is a record-breaker - again!

  67. 19:31:

AC Milan starting XI: Abbiati; Abate, Bonera, Rami, Emanuelson; Montolivo, De Jong, Taarabt, Poli, Kaka; Pazzini. Subs: Amelia, Gabriel, Constant, De Sciglio, Mexes, Zaccardo, Birsa, Essien, Honda, Saponara, Petagna, Robinho.

  68. 19:28:
Spanish La LigaAlmeria the underdogs- Barcelona v Almeria (20:00 GMT)

So what about Barcelona's opponents Almeria? Almeria lie just two places above the relegation zone having struggled in its first season back in the top flight.

Francisco Rodriguez's men have lost four away matches in a row, shipping 10 goals and scoring just one in reply.

Lambs to the slaughter? It will take some performance to upset the odds.

  70. 19:23:
Spanish La LigaMust do better- Barcelona v Almeria (20:00 GMT)
    Cesc Fabregas and Lionel Messi

Barcelona midfielder Cesc Fabregas admits there can be no more "excuses" as his side look to recover from their surprise defeat to Real Sociedad last time out.

He said: "We're the first to know that we didn't play a good game. We lacked mobility, intensity and precision, things that are vital to win a game. We've analysed the game, we know where we made mistakes and now we have to recover everything that we didn't do."

The defeat in San Sebastian was treated like a mini crisis by the Catalan press but, with just three league defeats all season, most clubs in the world could only dream of a crisis like that.

Italian Serie AOld Lady to edge even closer?- AC Milan v Juventus (19:45 GMT)

After Roma slipped up against Inter Milan on Saturday by drawing 0-0, Juventus have the chance to take a giant leap towards a third Scudetto when they take on AC Milan.

Victory for the Old Lady would move them 11 points clear of Roma with just 13 games remaining.

Their hopes of taking the three points will undoubtedly be boosted by the news that striker Mario Balotelli is missing for Milan, whose domestic season is quickly petering out. Clarence Seedorf's side are ninth, six points adrift of fifth place Inter.

    French Ligue 1Ajaccio 2-3 Lille
    Salomon Kalou

Former Chelsea forward Salomon Kalou scored a hat-trick earlier on Sunday to help Lille remain in third place in Ligue 1 as they beat bottom-side Ajaccio 3-2 win.

Ajaccio striker Gadji Tallo put the hosts ahead before Kalou equalised from the penalty spot after Ajaccio midfielder Johan Cavalli handled the ball inside the area.

The Ivory Coast forward volleyed home a cross from Jonathan Delaplace to give Lille the lead and, though Tallo equalised three minutes before halftime by chipping goalkeeper Vincent Enyeama, Kalou scored another penalty late on to seal the win.

"We wanted to offer this intensity and desire to the fans and I think that is what we did."

Spanish La LigaMartino banned- Barcelona v Almeria (20:00 GMT)

Barcelona will have to do without their manager Gerardo Martino on the sidelines this evening as he serves a one-match ban, given to him for his actions during their defeat to Real Sociedad last time out.

Martino was sent off for insulting Sociedad's assistant coach, Txema Lumbreras.

  78. 18:53:
Spanish La LigaBarcelona v Almeria (20:00 GMT)
    Barcelona manager Gerardo Martino

There is no panic at Barcelona at the moment with boss Gerardo Martino pointing out the destination of the La Liga title is still very much in their own hands.

He said: "Everything in the league continues to depend on ourselves, but we need to win every game that remains."

Last weekend's shock 3-1 defeat to Real Sociedad was not in the script though and, with Barca due to visit the Bernabeu on 23 March, they can't afford too many more slip ups.

  79. 18:49:
Spanish La LigaPlayer reaction- Atletico Madrid 2-2 Real Madrid

Real Madrid defender Sergio Ramos talking to Spanish television broadcaster Canal Plus:

"The draw leaves us feeling a bit disappointed because in the second half we were clearly dominating and deserved another goal or two.

"We are still three points clear and we need to keep improving and collecting points."

Spanish La LigaBarcelona v Almeria (20:00 GMT)

While the people of Madrid forget about football for the rest of the evening and return to their carnival celebrations, attention turns towards Barcelona.

Barca won't be too disappointed with the result from the Madrid derby but will know they need to improve on last weekend's showing against Real Sociedad, if they are to return to winning ways against Almeria this evening.

Dutch EredivisieDe Boer on the cusp of history- Feyenoord 1-2 Ajax
    Ajax coach Frank De Boer

Frank de Boer moves closer to etching his name into the history books as the first Ajax coach to win four Eredivisie titles in a row after watching his side move eight clear at the top of the table with a 2-1 win against Feyenoord.

Graziano Pelle had put Feyenoord ahead but goals from Kolbeinn Sigthorsson and Joel Veltman secured the three points for Ajax.

    La Liga table

So what has this done to the La Liga table?

Real Madrid remain top and Cristiano Ronaldo's late equaliser means Barcelona can not climb above them even with victory at home to Almeria this evening.

Atletico remain three points behind their city rivals but still very much in the title race.

  90. 17:59:
Spanish La LigaAtletico Madrid 2-2 Real Madrid (FT)

There were plenty of talking points as Atletico's Diego Costa and Real's Cristiano Ronaldo were left furious at rejected penalty appeals.

But, probably the most remarkable incident came from off the field when Atletico assistant coach Mono Burgos had to be physically restrained by manager Diego Simeone, as he vented his fury at the third official.

Alan Pardew eat your heart out.

  91. 17:55:

    Cristiano Ronaldo scoers

Real Madrid were not about to concede a derby defeat without a fight though and, after plenty of second-half pressure, Cristiano Ronaldo levelled late on to earn his side a deserved a point.

  92. 17:54:
Spanish La LigaAtletico Madrid 2-2 Real Madrid (FT)

So after a frenetic 90 minutes of football, let us recap what we have just seen.

Karim Benzema gave Real the perfect start by slotting home from close range, before goals from Koke and a stunner from Gabi saw Atletico take a 2-1 lead by the break.

  93. 17:49:
Spanish La LigaFULL-TIME- Atletico Madrid 2-2 Real Madrid

And breathe. The final whistle goes with honours even.

The pace of the game was incredible throughout but there will be a lot of talk post match about the amount of play-acting that went on from both sides.

Barcelona are in action later this evening at home to Almeria and they won't be too disappointed by seeing their two title rivals battle out a draw.

  94. 17:47:
Spanish La LigaAtletico Madrid 2-2 Real Madrid

Real Madrid won't be too disappointed with this result, mind you neither will Atletico Madrid. If it finishes a draw, then the La Liga title race very much remains a three-horse race.

  95. 17:45:
Spanish La LigaAtletico Madrid 2-2 Real Madrid

We are entering time added on and Real are pushing for a winner.

  96. 17:42:
Spanish La LigaAtletico Madrid 2-2 Real Madrid

Both teams are piling forward looking for a winner as all defensive discipline appears to have disappeared.

First Diego Costa has a shot blocked after some shocking defending by the visitors before Real go up the other end and Luka Modric fires just over the bar.

A moment of opportunism from Cristiano Ronaldo silences the Vincente Calderon.

Daniel Carvajal does well down the right and his low cross finds its way to Ronaldo, who smashes home from just inside the penalty area. You could sense it was coming.

  99. 17:36:
Spanish La LigaAtletico Madrid 2-1 Real Madrid

I wonder whether Barcelona are watching this? You can be sure they will know what is going on though and if things stay like this, they would return to the top of La Liga with a victory at home to Almeria this evening. We will bring you live text commentary of the action from the Nou Camp once we are finished here.

Spanish La LigaCLOSE!- Atletico Madrid 2-1 Real Madrid

Cristiano Ronaldo rises like a salmon and heads agonisingly wide of the far post. He should score with goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois stranded.

    Cristiano Ronaldo

Cristiano Ronaldo is getting increasingly frustrated. The Portuguese strikes another 25-yard free-kick straight into the wall to the delight of the home fans.

There is no time for breath here as the game flows from end to end. You get the feeling there is plenty more drama left.

  103. 17:25:
Spanish La LigaCLOSE!- Atletico Madrid 2-1 Real Madrid

Anyway, enough of the off-field drama. Arda Turan almost puts Atletico into a 3-1 lead as his header is tipped over by goalkeeper Diego Lopez.

Spanish La LigaAtletico Madrid 2-1 Real Madrid

The man who Diego Simeone was having to hold back was his assistant coach Mono Burgos. He does have previous having once threatened to rip Jose Mourinho's head off.

    Atletico assistant manager

Atletico again shout for a penalty as Diego Costa tumbles inside the penalty area. This time the referee books Costa for simulation.

Incredible scenes on the touchline as Atletico manager Diego Simeone is forced to hold back one of his backroom staff, as he lays into the third official.

It looks as though he has been sent from the sidelines.

  106. 17:19:
Spanish La LigaAtletico Madrid 2-1 Real Madrid

The home fans in the Vincente Calderon are on their feet hollering for a penalty again as Diego Costa loses his footing inside the penalty area under Pepe's challenge.

The referee rightly waves play on and Real are almost level seconds later as they break with speed and Karim Benzema volleys inches wide of the far post.

This game could still go either way.

    Cristiano Ronaldo

The chance comes to nothing as Cristiano Ronaldo fires his free-kick straight at the wall. It looks as though Gabi blocks the shot with his raised arm though so Atletico can consider themselves fortunate not to see a penalty awarded against them.

A chance for Real as Fabio Coentrao is fouled on the edge of Atletico's box. Step forward Cristiano Ronaldo.......

Spanish La LigaCLOSE!- Atletico Madrid 2-1 Real Madrid

What a chance for Atletico top scorer Diego Costa. The Brazil-born striker races through on goal but, after a decent first touch, he drags his shot wide of goal.

  112. 17:07:
Spanish La LigaAtletico Madrid 2-1 Real Madrid

As of yet, we have hardly seen anything of two thirds of Real's famous 'BBC' forward line. Karim Benzema may have given the visitors the lead but Gareth Bale and Cristiano Ronaldo have been kept very quiet.

Still, it only takes a second.....

  113. 17:04:
Spanish La LigaAtletico Madrid 2-1 Real Madrid

Both sets of players enjoy a bit of simulation don't they? This time Diego Costa goes down like a dying swan after minimal contact.

The free-kick is given just 25 yards out for Atletico...... but Costa strikes low straight at goalkeeper Diego Lopez.

Real Madrid have won their last eight matches at the Vincente Calderon and are unbeaten in their last 14 visits to the Rojiblancos.

Take a breath, grab a brew and get ready for another pulsating 45 minutes.

  120. 16:47:
Spanish La LigaGOAL- Atletico Madrid 2-1 Real Madrid - Gabi (45 mins)

What. A. Strike. Atletico skipper Gabi collects the ball 30-yards out from goal and drills a strike past goalkeeper Diego Lopez.

An absolute stunner as Atletico go ahead.

  121. 16:46:
Spanish La LigaCLOSE!- Atletico Madrid 1-1 Real Madrid

Sergio Ramos is having a very uncomfortable afternoon against Diego Costa.

The Brazilian 'Beast' rolls his way past the Spain defender on the edge of the penalty area before seeing his attempted dink saved by goalkeeper Diego Lopez.

Atletico are finishing the half very strongly.

  122. 16:43:
Spanish La LigaAtletico Madrid 1-1 Real Madrid

Looking at the replays of the previous incident, Pepe should be a tad embarrassed at his theatrical fall onto the ground after very little contact.

Lucky he wasn't on the end of Alan Pardew's headbutt at Hull yesterday......

  123. 16:41:
Spanish La LigaAtletico Madrid 1-1 Real Madrid

What is going on here? Pepe goes down in the penalty area off the ball holding his face.

The referee seems to have seen what has gone on and books both Pepe and Diego Godin. If all 22 players finish that match it will be something of an achievement.

  126. 16:29:
Spanish La LigaGOAL- Atletico Madrid 1-1 Real Madrid - Koke (28 mins)

Game on. Arda Turan does well to turn on the edge of the area before slipping the ball into the unmarked Koke.

The Spain midfielder takes a touch before firing low into the corner of the net from the right hand side of the penalty area. A great finish and the decibel level at the Vincente Calderon goes up another level.

Karim Benzema is a man playing with confidence and he nearly doubles Real's lead with a well-hit the volley. The striker watches the ball arch over his shoulder before side-footing a volley that is parried away by goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois.

Seconds later Courtois again has to be alert as he parries away Cristiano Ronaldo's back-flick.

  129. 16:24:

Another break in play, this time for an injury to Pepe.

Mario Suarez flies late into a tackle on the Portugal international and the Real bench are understandably furious as a free-kick is not given.

Pepe is back up after treatment, but this match is not for the weak-hearted.

  130. 16:21:

Real Madrid's Cristiano Ronaldo and Atletico's Juanfran

He is back up though and looks ready to run it off.

  131. 16:20:
Spanish La LigaAtletico Madrid 0-1 Real Madrid

Atletico have responded fairly well to their early set-back, although for all of their intensity they are yet to test Real Madrid's goal.

The more you look at that previous penalty appeal though, the more it looks as though Diego Costa was caught by Sergio Ramos.

Spanish La LigaPENALTY APPEAL- Atletico Madrid 0-1 Real Madrid

Atletico are furious at what they see as a huge injustice.

Diego Costa touches the ball past Sergio Ramos inside the penalty area before taking a tumble under the Spaniard's challenge. The referee waves play on, although there was certainly no contact with the ball.

Maybe a bit of a let off for Real. They have been given.

  135. 16:11:
Spanish La LigaAtletico Madrid 0-1 Real Madrid
    Karim Benzema

What a season Karim Benzema is enjoying for Real Madrid. The France striker's goal was his 15th of the La Liga season.

Real also boast the league's top scorer, in Cristiano Ronalo (22) and have Gareth Bale also in double figures (10). Not a bad forward line eh?

  136. 16:08:
Spanish La LigaAtletico Madrid 0-1 Real Madrid

Atletico Madrid had a tough enough task on their hands before kick-off. That has just multiplied.

When you consider Real have won the last eight matches at the Vicente Calderon and not lost in their last 14 matches, the last thing Atletico needed was a start like that. This is a real test of their La Liga credentials.

The teams are coming out at the Vicente Calderon Stadium and, as expected, there is an atmosphere befitting a match of this significance.

The Atletico fans are holding up red and white cards to show their allegiance all over the ground and, if Real were in any doubt about the hostility they would face, that reception would have quickly wiped that away.

Spanish La LigaKey battles in Madrid- Atletico Madrid v Real Madrid (16:00 GMT)

In the past decade, the La Liga title race has only ever contained two teams, with Barcelona and Real Madrid enjoying unchallenged supremacy.

Since Valencia's title triumph in 2004, Barca have taken six titles and the remaining three have been claimed by Real, with no other team coming close to disrupting the duopoly. In the last five seasons, the gap between first place and third has never been fewer than 17 points.

But the current campaign has been different, with a third party barging their way into the proceedings: Atletico Madrid. Take a look at some head-to-head battles that could prove key in today's Madrid derby here.

Los Blancos are now on a 27-match unbeaten run in all competitions, in the Copa Del Ray final against Barcelona and 6-1 up against Schalke in the Champions League last 16.

But underestimate Atletico at your peril. Los Rojiblancos are unbeaten at home in the league this season and are not going to give up the chance to win a first title since 1995-96 without a fight.

For so long just a sub-plot to the La Liga title race, the Madrid derby has suddenly become the main event.
