Shrewsbury Town sign Scott Vernon and James Caton

Shrewsbury have made their ninth summer signing by recruiting Scott Vernon from Scottish Premiership side Aberdeen.

The Manchester-born striker, 30, who has hit 43 goals in four seasons with the Dons, has signed a two-year deal, with the option of a further 12 months.

Manager Micky Mellon revealed the deal was verbally agreed several weeks ago, before Vernon went on holiday.

Shrewsbury's contracted players for 2014-15: Dave McAllister, Dom Smith, Callum Burton, Harry Lewis, Jon Taylor, Aaron Wildig, Jermaine Grandison, Ryan Woods, Ashley Vincent, Nat Knight-Percival, Mark Ellis, Mickey Demetriou, James Collins, Mark Halstead, James Wesolowski, Jayson Leutwiler, Scott Vernon, James Caton

Town also confirmed the signing of winger James Caton who was released by Championship side Blackpool.

The 20-year-old had spells on loan at Accrington and Chester having failed to break into the Tangerines' first team.

Vernon began his career at Oldham in 2002, before having spells at Mellon's former club Blackpool, initially on loan, Colchester United and Southend United prior to heading to Scotland in 2010.

"Scott is a very good player, a clever striker, who I believe will fit in perfectly," said boss Mellon.

"He makes good runs and has good movement. He's a striker, but can play in a number of variations. He can play in the number 10 role, he can play in a front two or up front on his own."

Mellon has now more than doubled the size of his squad since taking charge a month ago.

Having inherited just eight players, he signed winger Ashley Vincent and defenders Mickey Demetriou, Mark Ellis and Nat Knight-Percival.

He then made his first raid on his native Scotland to bring striker James Collins from Hibernian back to the club.

Mellon then also signed Blackpool goalkeeper Mark Halstead and Oldham midfielder James Wesolowski, also both on two-year deals, followed by a second keeper, Jayson Leutwiler, following his release by Middlesbrough.
