Surrey United re-branded Surrey Scorchers as Raftopoulos returns

British Basketball League side Surrey United have been re-branded Surrey Scorchers following a change in ownership of the franchise.

Last month it was announced that the Surrey Sports Park would take whole ownership of the club.

And they have also re-appointed Zimbabwean Creon Raftopoulos as coach.

Raftopoulos led the Guildford-based side under its previous guises of Guildford Heat and Surrey Heat, before being sacked in August 2013.

They achieved a top-four finish under him in 2012-13 and reached the BBL Trophy final in 2011, but Raftopoulos was dismissed ahead of a takeover which saw the club's name changed to Surrey United.

Surrey Sports Park, which is also home to netball's Surrey Storm and badminton's Surrey Smashers, previously had part-ownership of the BBL franchise.

"We have launched a fresh club identity, which we feel gives us a new start and an opportunity to fully professionalise the team," Scorchers franchise director Gavin Baker said.

"We hope the entire basketball community of Surrey, including fans past and present, can get behind the new team as we look to build a competitive squad and a club with community at its heart."
