The British Lionhearts boxing team is to appear in Newport as part of the 2018 season of the World Series of Boxing.

The squad takes on France Fighting Roosters on Saturday 14 April.

Gateshead and Liverpool will also stage matches against Croatia Knights and Italia Thunder in February and March respectively.

The Lionhearts team fought at London's York Hall in 2017 and includes mainly British amateurs and new professionals.

GB Boxing chief executive Matt Holt said: "WSB is a very high-quality competition and we have made the decision to move the team around the country so that more boxing fans will have the opportunity to experience it for themselves and see boxers from their hometown competing in this format."

Set up in 2012, the Lionhearts franchise has included Wales's world flyweight title challenger Andrew Selby, Olympic welterweight silver medallist Fred Evans, and European lightweight champion Joe Cordina.

Last season, the team reached the semi-final of the Series where they were beaten by eventual winners Astana Arlans Kazakhstan.

The line-up for the Newport date has yet to be decided but is set to feature several Welsh boxers.

British Lionhearts home fixtures for 2018:

16 February vs Croatian Knights - Gateshead Leisure Centre

2 March vs Italia Thunder - The Auditorium, Liverpool Echo Arena

14 April vs France Fighting Roosters - Newport Leisure Centre
