Derbyshire's batsmen set up an intriguing final day's play with Middlesex at Derby.

After the hosts resumed on 193-3, 117 ahead, Greg Smith (50) and Dan Redfern (49) stretched the advantage.

Further contributions from Chesney Hughes (36), Tony Palladino (29 no) and Jonathan Clare took Derbyshire to 403, setting Middlesex 328 to win.

Openers Chris Rogers (49) and Scott Newman (37) helped Middlesex to 145-2 at the close, 183 short of victory.

After Hughes fell to Steve Finn, Smith and Redfern shared 70 for the fourth wicket, while the Derbyshire tail wagged to add 90 vital runs for the last four wickets.

The opening stand between Rogers and Newman was worth 79 when Newman pulled Smith to deep square-leg.

Tony Palladino then struck to trap the former Derbyshire captain lbw, leaving Dawid Malan (25 not out) and Dan Housego (20 not out) to see Middlesex to the close.
