Worcestershire on top against Hampshire between showers
LV County Championship Division One, New Road
Close, day one: Worcestershire 250-4 v Hampshire
Worcs 2pt, Hants 1pt
Worcestershire's Vikram Solanki ended up one short of a century as the hosts made 250-4 against Hampshire.
After Dimitri Mascarenhas (2-49) picked up the wicket of Matt Pardoe, Solanki (99no) put on 100 with skipper Daryl Mitchell (60) for the second wicket.
Mitchell fell to Imran Tahir and Mascarenhas saw off Moeen Ali for one.
Solanki then shared a fourth-wicket partnership of 108 with Alexei Kervezee (55), who was out in the final over of the day to Liam Dawson.
It was a slow start for the home side as both Mitchell and Pardoe took until the 14th over to reach double figures.
The latter soon became a first Championship wicket for Mascarenhas, who missed almost all last season with an ankle injury, since September 2009.
Solanki lifted the tempo straight away with his flashing drives, mostly through the offside as Worcestershire reached tea on 133-1.
Mitchell fell in the second over after the interval, caught at point off Tahir and Moeen soon followed, when he prodded forward and was caught behind.
Solanki and Kervezee ensured the hosts were in control by the close, their 108-run partnership coming off 27 overs.
But, after reaching his half-century from 53 deliveries, Kervezee gave his wicket away three balls before the close.
Spinner Dawson was brought on by Cork to bowl the final over and Kervezee lofted a simple catch to James Vince.
Solanki remained unbeaten on 99, with one six and 13 fours from his 168-ball knock.
