Onions shines as Tykes struggle at Chester-le-Street
|LV County Championship Division One, Durham ICG|
|Close, day two: Yorkshire 170-9|
Graham Onions starred as Durham dominated anothed rain-affected day against Yorkshire at Chester-le-Street.
Onions took 3-66 and Paul Collingwood weighed in with 2-22 on only his fourth Championship appearance in five years as the Tykes were limited to 170-9.
In the 53 overs of play possible, Adil Rashid (47) and Jonny Bairstow (38) were Yorkshire's main providers.
Joe Root made 27 as the Tykes recovered comparatively from a disasatrous start when they slumped to 28-3.
After day one was rained off without a ball being bowled, Onions claimed his first wicket with the sixth ball of the day when he found Adam Lyth's edge.
After Anthony McGrath was LBW to Callum Thorp, Onions then also removed visiting skipper Andrew Gale before Root and Bairstow repaired the damage.
At 66-3, there was then a two-hour weather delay, having gone off for bad light. And things did not look much brighter when they resumed as Steve Harmison struck twice in six balls to get rid of Root and Gary Ballance before Onions got the key wicket of Bairstow.
Rashid and Richard Pyrah tried to turn things round again, putting on 58 for the seventh wicket.
But they both went in quick succession, along with Ryan Sidebottom as Collingwood got in on the act with his two late scalps.
Durham started the day 17 points clear at the top, while Yorkshire have not won since the opening match and lie seventh.
