Root scored the fourth half-century of his Championship season

Joe Root guided Yorkshire to their second County Championship win of the season which saw them leapfrog Worcestershire in the table.

Resuming on 80-3, Yorkshire needed 54 more runs for victory and took less than an hour to reach their target.

Saeed Ajmal claimed the only wicket of the morning when he had Jonny Bairstow (33) stumped by Ben Scott.

But that was scant consolation for the visitors as Root (52 not out) led Yorkshire to a winning total of 135-4.

The result could turn out to be a key one in the fight for Division One survival.

Worcestershire began the game just five points ahead of Yorkshire who were second from bottom.

But they now lie 13 points adrift of Andrew Gale's side, although they still have a game in hand.

That deficit could have been greater but Yorkshire were docked two points for a slow over rate.
