Ross Whiteley and Jonathan Clare rescue Derbyshire
LV= County Championship Division Two, Northampton
Close, day one: Derbyshire 321-8 v Northants
Derbys 3pts, Northants 2pts
Ross Whiteley hit his maiden first-class century as he and Jonathan Clare dug Derbyshire out of trouble on day one of their clash with Northants.
Northants made the most of winning the toss and bowling as Chaminda Vaas (4-87) and Jack Brooks (2-66) helped reduce Derbyshire to 39-5, then 90-6.
But Whiteley (103) and Clare (82) fought back with a partnership of 182 for the seventh wicket.
Their efforts helped Derbyshire reach the close on 321-8.
Whiteley, a 22-year-old all-rounder playing only his sixth championship match and with a previous highest score of 33, completed his century off 106 balls, with 16 fours and a six, after giving Division Two leaders Northants only one chance - a tough leg-side catch for wicketkeeper Niall O'Brien.
Clare was also put down on 79 by Rob Newton at extra cover but fell three runs later to a sliced drive to gully off Andrew Hall.
