Surrey were frustrated by rain after taking early wickets on the opening day of their clash with Middlesex.

Only 35 overs were possible at Guildford but in that time Surrey gained the upper hand by reducing Middlesex to 51-4.

They went to lunch on 61-4 before rain wiped out play until 1700 BST.

A further six overs were possible before further rain forced an early close with Middlesex 88-4, Chris Rogers unbeaten on 33.

CLOSE OF PLAY SUMMARY

BBC London 94.9's Kevin Hand:

"It was a good toss to win on an unusually helpful track for the bowlers at Guildford.

"The seamers all bowled well while Gareth Batty bowled a beauty to remove Dawid Malan.

"Chris Rogers displayed his usual class and determination but he too was troubled by the movement of the ball."
