Durham's bid to stretch their lead at the top of the County Championship with victory over Nottinghamshire was held up by the weather at Chester-le-Street.

Only 12.2 overs were possible because of rain on day three, with Durham moving from 6-0 to 37-2, a lead of 127.

Will Smith was first to go when he hit a long hop from Charlie Shreck to Sam Kelsall at cover, before Gordon Muchall edged Darren Pattinson to Chris Read.

But with only one day left a draw would appear the most likely result.

Durham are also expected to be without first-innings centurion Michael Di Venuto for the rest of the match after he suffered a finger injury trying to take a slip catch.

An X-ray has shown no break and the club remain hopeful he will be fit for Sunday's FL t20 quarter-final against Hampshire at the Rose Bowl.
